CDZ onto Civ4 - very early thoughts
I'm getting bored, and so started to think about stuff lately. Since I'm almost sure I will jump on the Civ4 train, I was wondering about how CDZ will handle it. We can use this thread as a little place to give ideas away, even if it's well early.
Mmmh, the 1st and obvious thing that comes to mind is the very name of the site. It's currently "Civ3 Duel Zone". Even if other games are played here, and even if not only 1v1 get played in Civ as well, the central and starting point of this site is the Civ3 1v1 PBEM. So far so good, but what when Civ4 comes in, with a brand new multiplayer part in the vanilla version (we can dream) ? I'd suggest the renaming to "Civ Duel Zone", the most simple I can think of, cause Civ3 won't get lost in a matter of weeks. OK, let's the bash upon me start !!!

krys: (afaik) anarres has the domains civduelzone.com, .org, and .net (pretty sure). Hopefully they'll change the game engine, and not the graphics so much - the 3D graphics are pretty good. I enjoyed the Conquests, so maybe they'll have more scenarios made by the staff working for them. Overall, I just want a game released at the right time (I probably won't buy Civ4 right away - maybe a month or so. I'll see what people here and on CFC say...I'll end up buying it, I just want to know what to expect.)

The graphics of Civ3 suck, they are boring, I hate them, hope they get replaced by a more decent engine. Civ4 would be unplayable for at least 6 months or more after the release. This was the case with Civ2 and Civ3. I'm going to buy it, play a few games to see how it looks (if it will start at all) and then wait for a normal playable patch. BTW, I have not touched Civ3 prior to 1.29f patch (could not even start it on one PC and got all the crappy bugs on another, so just played one game and then stopped) and PTW prior to 1.27f patch and Conquests prior to 1.15 patch.
Since it is not know what is Civ4 and how it would work, there is little sense in discussing these issues at present. May be Civ4 would be such a buggy and glitchy crap (as some Atari "big hits") that nobody would be willing to play it. IMO Atari is one of the most stupid makers of the most stupid games. Probaly, second after Sierra IMO. So, we end up playing Civ3 for a long-long time. And there would be no need to rename anything.

GA is correct. You can access the site from any of the following domains:
http://www.civ3duelzone.com http://www.civ3duelzone.org http://www.civ3duelzone.net http://www.civduelzone.com http://www.civduelzone.org http://www.civduelzone.net

We could think of other names that could be abbreviated to CDZ, like, em, Colon Disorder Zealots.

anarres, this is great ! "www.civduelzone.com" could indeed be useful in some distant future (BTW, Ginger_Ale is a smart boy). akots, I was mainly talking about how the SITE will evolve, but you're right that the quality of the new game will be one factor. One way or another, I don't think Civ4 will be unplayable, and it will soon end being played on this site, so the question is worth it.
I was also thinking of having a subtitle for the name of the site, like "the best place for PBEMs" or something different of course. I have other ideas but need to think about them, and it's early anyway.

I hope the gap between Civ4 and Civ3 will be as big as between Civ3 and Civ2. I've played Civ2 for years and years. Until I got Civ3. I only started 2 or 3 Civ2 games since and quit within 1 hour. Civ2 didn't attract me at all when I had civ4.
If civ4 is so much better than civ3, I guess registering "www.civ4duelzone.???" will suffice. But I'm usually too optimistic.
