Default Act 3: change of management

If the first act was REXing, the second act was GP + teching, and I can smell the third act beginning within 5-10 turns.

Mongols and Malinese have bought my maps. That'll help with the upgrading budget. Lots of cannons to buy up.

Killer is massing a fleet, no doubt hoping to punch through with numbers and create a bit of a mess. He saw the frigates though. It would be a shame if privateers were to ... happen to his fleet.



Matrix is massing troops right out of line of sight ; assorted troops and 4 soon-to-be-cannons will greet him when he plays his cards.



War on 3 fronts.

The deal I have with Mali will save me a lot of trouble and time. I doubt I would have lost much either way. But he'll gift me his cities, all of them, and I'll gift him the 3-city military blacksite. He sends all of his troops to his capital and we meet there for a single, glorious battle. Cannons against skirmishers .

I kindof regret it, not because of the deal - it's a great deal for me - but because he skips tons of turns. If it becomes a problem, I'll ask permission to the others and retire him completely. And if he doesn't take the deal this turn because he doesn't bother fucking logging in, then I'll just go for a good ol' genocide.

Killer's navy is currently thinning, thanks to my first privateer, with more to follow presently.



Matrix's golden age has ended and he took advantage of it by building both the Apostolic Palace and the University of Sankore. That means all his holy buildings give him 2 research and 2 hammers. Neat. I'll have to dance around apostolic palace resolutions but hey, besides the diplo win, I'll just defy everything else.

It also means he delayed attacking and/or building troops until after his GA ...



... and now I have cannons.



A ship chain will be linking my main land and Labrador shortly.

Once I have enough cannons to barge in confidently, barge in I shall.

Speaking of barging in, Mali went all wishy-washy and asked to not only be given an island to relocate to, but to not give away anything before fighting at the capital in case he won that war, and to extend it by a good 10 turns to put everything in order. The whole reason I offered a clean 1-site war was to save turns. That's a no-go. So barge in uninvited and knock on the door with cannons, I shall.

Mali's first city (1 axe 2 LBows) shaved 1.3 HP off a cannon and that's it. No injuries, no casualty, not even going to slow me down one bit. 7 clean victories. Nearly a great general.

Matrix has met the mongols ( ProPain's neighbor) to the west and is still slowly stacking up troops just outside line of sight to the east. Both he and Killer have spent espionage points counter-espionaging me, which is great - less of them to steal techs with. I'm 2 turns away from a direct ship-chain that will allow 3 units per turn to teleport straight from Lévis to Labrador. This should tip the balance of power in favor of my mining colony.

Killer's active galleys are off to Davy Jones' locker. I spotted a hefty army hidden nearby but it won't be able to make the trip. Once I have enough cannons to hold Maarten, I'll send 3 privateers up the bay of HQ. No more seafood, no more navy. That should trigger the war, send him on a long trek north and give me time to juggle some elephants around.

Massive hit by Killer's spies, in retaliation to the privateers:



... or was it Matrix's spies? I didn't keep count of their espionage points. My research sank nearly 300 BPT to 200. Matrix is 11 turns from astro, so his research clocks in at around 200 BPT also.

Lévis is about to get a great specialist, probably a prophet but maybe an engineer. The plan was Versailles but if I can rush Taj Mahal, get the GA and switch civics for free, I'll only have lost 5 turns of double-scientists. That's still 1500 beakers, the price of a late medieval tech. Can't let it taunt me into attacking though.

Eyes on the malinese capital: 4 longbows and assorted garbage.



It'll take 2 extra turns but all trebs will be upped to cannons. That way we go from pretty sure to a guaranteed landslide victory.

With a bonus!



Crusade
  1. Get 0.5*default number of players for this world size+1 conscript units
  2. Build the shrine for your state religion
  3. Spread your state religion to default number of players for this world size cities

The walls have just been bombarded down to nothing. Next turn, 7 cannons attack. There's too many defenders so it will take 2-3 turns to get everything out of there. Massive cannon XP incoming.

I started to build a pre-emptive fort right by His Imperial Holiness Matrix's frontline city. I'll park myself there 1 turn ahead and invite him to dance.



Killer's seaside is now under pirate law. He may be able to punch through with sheer numbers. We'll see.

For the first time in a while, I've set the slider to 100% science and busted the 1000 BPT mark.



This turn, the malinese capital fell. Still not a single casualty, though a cannon dropped to 0.1 strength. Close call. 1 size-3 city to go with 2, maybe 3 LBows inside.

Next turn, the crusade kicks in and we also got a new quest:



Guns Not Butter
  1. All Musketman units gain the Pinch promotion
  2. IF Vassalage civic gain 400 gold
  3. IF you control the Taj Mahal wonder trigger a golden age

It is too late to get either Vassalage or Taj, therefore, pinch it is.

And now, the end.



Our stacks are just out of earshot from each other, but expert spy Frank Drebbin keeps a good tally of their strength.

5 free muskets. Galleons are en route to ferry the army out of Mali in a few turns.
Jeke played, this past turn, to my surprise. He got lucky and took down a galleon with a trireme and a galley. Mali will only last a handful of turns so it might have been his last hurrah.

On the more exciting side of the world, we are at war with His Imperial Holiness Matrix.

9 cannons were necessary to bombard Feariburg to 0% defense, after which 1 cannon (32% odds) and 1 musket (96%+) died killing its defenders. One Landsknecht was left alive at 1HP to tell the horrific tales of the first Stralish defeat in history. The plan really is to fight his (poorly hidden) stack with many, many cannons ready to go, so I sit in the fort for now and hope he either fills the city with elephants or attacks the fort. Either way, that's a story for tomorrow.

Killer has musketeers but declined the invitation to a threesome, or the challenge posed by privateers.
Japan has CS but not MCasting+Machinery for samurai yet.
Mongols have calendar so I offered a trade for spices.

More to come when we meet the Combat-IV elephants in the room.

** Breaking News **

Maarten attacked. Hard. With his entire stack. He took fights from 8% to 60% on the fort and bravely gave everything he had. Here's the aftermath:



I still have 18 defenders + healer, he has 11 (down from 28 IIRC). Most at half health or less on both sides and only 1 full-health Xbow on defense. Next turn I'll use up a promotion on everything that makes sense and retaliate. I only have 9 units that can attack to begin with so he'll stay alive, but a fresh duo of LBow + musket will keep me safe ... ish.

Flawless victory on round 2, but he still had numbers on me. 2 to go.



Following his first defeat, he contacted everyone and told them to embargo me. Everyone went along with it. I'll have a bit of a health scare on my hands but Feariburg has a very handy wheat worth 2 health with granary, harbours are worth 3 health and apothecaries 4 (soon 5). It'll pass.
