Default Fall from Heaven 2

With so many fantasy fans (as evidenced in the "recommend me a book" thread in OT) at CDZ I'm kind of amazed that no-one has mentioned Kael's Fall from Heaven 2 mod for CIV before.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=171398

Has anyone ever tried this mod?

Dwarves, elves, humans. Good versus evil. And CIV...
What more do you want from a good fantasy game?

I stumbled upon this a couple of days ago and I've played some. It's really complex (lots of new buildings, units, promotions, magic spells, etc.). Much more complex that regular CIV, but I find it very much fun to play, although I am still fairly clueless as to what exactly I am doing...

I'm playing this one from the very first version. It is wonderful indeed a completely different game.

I believe I know what I'm doing, beating it on Deity a couple of times and done it with most of civs and victory conditions on Emperor. Version 0.4 is great fun and the latest update is patch "p" or "r" IIRC.

Not all scenarios are ready yet but most are and those are huge fun as well.

What I'd seriously like is to have a PB with it on an Erebus map but it is going to be a long game and some final patch has to be released otherwise they are changing and updating it too much to be playable for a PB.

It looks very good.

The look reminds me of Age of Wonders II.

I'll probably try it this week-end.

It also reminds me that I have HOMM V final campaign that I need to take care of.

I'm not too sure if FfH2 is suited for multiplayer... Due to the very high number of events things may be very unbalanced in MP. Imagine getting a great prophet (or whatever) on turn 30...
But I would difinately like to try this in multiplayer!

You could try the link I posted. That one worked perfectly last week.

That is not a big issue, for MP balance events can be turned off (but not barbarians, barbarians are part of the fun, at least starting from Emperor!). This would slightly deplete the game since these events are huge fun and I don't think that great prophet on turn 30 will actually help anyone with anything seriously and that is a big thing compared to regular game.

Events are a huge part of the fun. Turning them off would definately take some of the flavour away from the game.

And a great prophet very early (or another great leader) would definately matter. A free shrine as soon as you finish researching a religion? That would definately boost the economy significantly...

Or Orthus spawning close to you on turn 75 (IIRC he always spawns right around turn 75). Great for flavour of the game, but very tough if it's close to you. It effectively kills your ability to expand for as long as Orthus lives...

Well, we're not playing for a competition or ladder or anything, so I'd say just play with events and see how it goes. Though I haven't tried FtH2 yet, with Civ it's also part of the game that you try to make the most out of the given situation. If there will come such an event that shifts the power balance, then that's part of the conclusion (or debate) at the end of the game. In other words, just play for fun and don't get grudged too easily.

IMO, Orthus is actually a great help. I always kill him when he is around and get the axe giving it to a hunter which then promotes at a blazing speed into a barbarian-killing monster in no time. One only needs to pick the right terrain for attack and to have enough warriors 3-4 will do the trick (first couple of hunters are usually there as well at this time).

Also, I have not had any problem farming for the first prophet early on (food in very seldom an issue on Erebus maps with Agrarian civic and especially after Sanitation) and by the time the early religions are founded (FoL, RoK, OO), usually there are only a couple of cities and no trade routes to spread religion on Erebus map. So yes, a shrine you can build but I would always try to put GProphet to Lunnotaur temple instead to get bonuses for disciple units and to acquire more room for priest specialists. So, if you want a shrine, that actually might be a critical mistake under some circumstances.

Also, to get a great person you need either to have some considerable cash (about 75 g) or have a very lucky run with a layer or goblin fortress with a scout or hunter (have not seen any great people or anything useful coming out of layer with warriors). And it usually pays back. In one game, I popped 3 techs from the huts (Ancient Chants, Fishing, and Mining) but then due to negligience in scouting around the borders a barbarian city popped up and at the very same turn Asheron appeared in it and this is not something you can live with especially when it is obscuring your third city spot. And that dragon horde makes massive amounts of culture so all your borders are basically screwed. To add to the insult, you need cats and courage spell of mind mana to kill the beast and an awful lot of hunters/axemen (better champions but these will show up only later).

I'd say that worst imbalancing factor is when the counter advances and Infernal appear near your borders (Hyborem is really hard to kill because of Immortal promotion) and if you are neutral, hell terrain kicks in and screws up all improvements. Then, the riders (starting from Stephanos and continuing with Barbaros and Co.) are really impossible to kill unless done rapidly, preferrably immediately after they appear or otherwise they gain supporters and experience at impossible rate. Again, one needs courage and cats for that. So, yes, it is a gamble a bit but you get Crown of Command as a reward and this is not a minor thing to have.

Also, Kael and Co. are constantly fixing stuff and straighthening the balance. In any case, we can play a scenario. Momus sounds like great fun when the war and peace are declared at random by Perpentach although it is too centered towards Lanun and I'm not sure if Balseraphs can be switched from AI still keeping the script on.
