Unless I'm reading it wrong, it won't decrease your storage space, the disks will be running considerably faster and will be in a single volume of about 750Gb. You MB does support multiple RAID configurations (0, 1, 5, or 10) in up to six SATA drives.

I thought it meant you'd store the data in a duplicate on both HD's, doubling transfer speed and reliability (because you always have a copy).

That is RAID1 that you are talking about, in RAID0 you have 2 disks couple in one volume which improves performance. I have it for four years on my desktop. Performance is essentially doubled (transfer rates are the same but access time is cut in half).
