Ok, well, I've played Civ5 now and I'm quite disappointed to be honest. Don't even know if I fancy hosting a pitboss of this if I don't like to play it myself anyway. Then again, I understood it's getting more fun with the expansion (Gods & Whatever), but then I'd have to spend even more money on it.

So...unless someone has an awesome sales story for the expansion, I much prefer to host Civ4.

I can see where he's coming from, it's taking its time to grow on me.

Social policy, if i unlock one branch do i keep all the benefits when i skip to another branch?

Yes, if you unlock a branch you get to keep it. You don't even need to unlock a whole branch before you invest in a new branch (though usually I unlock the whole tree as soon as I can to get the benefit from completing the branch).

The only thing with social policies you have to be aware of is that some branches can't be active simultaneously. In other words, you can't have freedom and be a nazi at the same time. Another thing is that the policy cost goes up with every new city (puppets don't count though, so if you capture a city, always make it a puppet!), so there's a major downside on going ICS. Spoiler alert: you'll find that if you never build more than three cities, it's ridiculously easy to get a cultural victory.

Alright, I'm installing Civ5 on my ancient laptop. (It's fast enough to run it.) But I suppose I should also get God & Kings? Furthermore I need to see if I can get access to the router to open the right port. Finally I should check how that multiplayerrobot thingy works. Anyway, it's in the pipeline.

I'm sure it only works in single player though.

The idea is that if you go with just three cities you'll have a guaranteed cultural victory; that is, if you manage to win before the AI does. The AI doesn't perceive culture as a threat, so all you have to do is to keep them from killing you. This is easy on a small continent or archipelago, as you'll only need a couple of ships. The key in civ5 SP is optimising cash flow, and keeping a low number of cities (and a small road network) certainly doesn't hurt that, especially in the beginning.

Of course there are other ways to get filthy rich (mainly involving buying mercantile CS and turning your huge population into specialists), but by doing so you'll cut off the option of a cultural victory and access to social policies. I think that when you're new to the game, this is confusing: the game is presenting you with seemingly valid gameplay options, yet you are to ignore them. OTOH, on prince it doesn't really matter what you do

You don't need G&K. If you want to learn how the game works, less options might be better than more options. I'd just start a game with a random civ and see where you end up. You could post a walkthrough, then we can laugh at errrr I mean give advice.

After your first game you can always see if you want G&K. G&K is fun, there are new mechanics and civs. It doesn't change the game fundamentally (as in, everything revolves around gold), but religion is just funny. It does make the game easier though (as there's an additional way to get gold/science/culture).

Well, I've played one game. (At least, I almost finished it.) Sure I don't know the exact proper tactics to win, but I sort of got the gist of it. It's alright to buy G&K too, but currently it's $29.99. I didn't check when it was on sale, but I can't really afford it now until February. The question is: should I start a Giant Multiplayer Robot game without it, or do you guys wanna wait until I've got the expansion?

the big plus imo opinion is that stacks of units are abandoned, meaning the armies are a bit more vulnerable, but still there are certain truths to win battles.. use at least two sling units like catapult or trebuchet for smaller cities up to 5 or 6 in size. to battle AI most of the time you sacrifice one or two weak units that are defensively attacked from the sieged city. I haven`t found any absolute algorithmics that are implemented though on which units get attacked first.. don`t forget to bring melee units to capture the city once all defense points are zeroed cause archers can only capture empty barb camps..

religion brings some benefits, although I liked it better in civ4. still it gives some economic and happiness bonuses that might be obligatory for mid game survival. it`s brings more universal (ie benefits for other civs once it starts spreading) in late game. I haven`t seen any cultural conversions in early to middle game anymore. cultural borders are steady and do not swap anymore, so if you find some key tiles (resources or natural wonders) make sure to buy them fast enough or you might be kicking yourself for the rest your game for leaving it to natural border growth algorithmics.

I`m trying to get into modding, but have trouble with visual studio getting to work on win 7, so modbuddy is not my buddy yet.
