I'm not a fan (was a long, long, long time ago), but I reckon he is a good singer and a pretty awesome dancer, as well as a fine composer. I checked some live performances last night (and will continue a little bit) ; he is so full of energy on stage, delivers impressive series of dance bits (moonwalk, and that strange bending on "Smooth Criminal") and holds the stage all by himself. Downsides include too much of special effects for just some music and dancing, and too much playback (I just hate playback). And of course, Off The Wall and Thriller are just huge in parties.

I've alwaqs wondered how in the world Thriller was the best album ever sold, BY FAR. Though Michael Jackson's is not my type of music, I can recognise the true art of his music, performances and entertainment. But by such a margin?
Why not the beatles' Sgt. Peppar's? I guess the music industry's marketing mechanics has improved a lot! But when watching that list, there are some truely amazing albums on that list. Celine de Jong (Dutch joke) & Mariah Carrey in the top 20? Get real! And check out #37: The 1968 album form Iron Butterfly In a Gadda da Vida. That high op the order?

Remember that some artists/firms bought their own stuff en masse to get awards

Hootie & The Blowfish? Never expected them to be in the Top 50.
Maybe in the Beatles time much more people lended the albums to their friends... Or general music equipment was much less...

Yes, there were surely less consumers and equipments in the 60s than in the 80s ! And MTV arrived at this time too. Plus, M.J. touched white AND black audiences.
BTW, who cares if some shit flies high in the list ? Let the masses listen to that ! But yes, Sgt. Pepper still roxxes.

I'm surprised that Dire Strait's "brothers in arms" is so low on that list.

Thriller was just commercially a piece of perfection.
It's a fascinating list, Stapel. Many surprises, like also how AC/DC got the 2nd place, cos that's not such an easy listener. The Dark Side Of The Moon is a funny case too: only one week at #1 in the Billboard 200, but has been in the charts for no less than...741 weeks. That's fourteen years.

This list is certainly an absolute bs joke and a bad one at that. Not sure where Stapel found it. But Thriller is a good album overall, nothing to be ashamed of.
