What I like best about Steam is that you can download your games any time any place. My HD decided to quit altogether 3 weeks ago, got a new one, installed steam, clicked the games I wanted installed and got a cup of coffee while Steam handled the rest. I love it.

And their sales aren't bad either.

I've had to rebuy both Civ 3 and 4 due to CDs dying on me. Civ 4 I never got to work without deoderant due to the DRM. I was very sceptical about steam at first, new computer and I didn't want to install loads of DRM, but when it's not running, it's not running, no unnecessary drivers clogging up your system. Yes it's there in the background when you play the game, but if your worried about the resources steam uses then I really doubt that the newer games would run anyway. The biggest downside that I've found so far is that the sales are too good to resist. In my view if we have to have DRM on games then this is the best at the moment.

I totally agree with Furiey. My civ 3 PTW CD broke, I wrote an email to Infogrames/Atari and they basically told me to buy a new copy and suck it up. Thank you for being a loyal customer and not downloading the game illegally. Steam fixes this kind of bullshit.

The sales are another thing though. I love em a bit too much, just can't resist.

I've never played (or even seen) a Total War game. I've got the demo and did part of the tutorial (about 1 hour of playtime now).

This looks like a real great fun game. It has a 1-more-turn feeling for me. I'm certainly going to play more and I might even buy the whole game.

Just started playing the demo. Oh dear, the cheapest I have found at the moment is £25.43 for the game on Amazon (tries to hide credit card)...

I enjoy the total war games and have played them almost as long as Civ. I don't always play out the battles though, mainly due to the time it takes, but now you can save part way through that excuse is gone. Mind you I still have Empire & Napolean to play through, I'll try to resist.

You just missed out on the TW series sale. Rome: Total War was only 2,50... if you look in the discount bin of a toy store you might find the R:TW gold edition for that cheap. That game is the best so far in the series. Well, perhaps Shogun2 is better. It's hard to say, as the game is just... well... different. But if you have budget concerns I would heartily recommend R:TW!

What turns me off about previous TW games is that in the end I figure out that civ's campaign map (read: city management) is just a lot better. TW also lacks workers and terrain improvement. But Shogun2 is different in the way that it doesn't make sense just to build every building you have available. As a matter of fact, you couldn't do that even if you wanted to (due to building spot restrictions, which are coupled to palace size, which is coupled to food requirements). So this time around you actually have to plan in advance. There's a tech tree now as well. All this does make the game a lot slower, but stuff like that and the character building (rpg element)
only strengthens the importance of the units you do have. Previous TW games (from Rome to Med2 and Empire) only made the scale larger and larger.

Oh, and there's ninja's in it.

Ninjas and zombies. No game is complete without them!

RTW Gold is still only £4.99 on Steam so still far cheaper than Shogun.

No Ninjas or Zombies in it though.
