Well, I think I only played five turns, half of which in anarchy because the AI switched to some very weird set of civics. And I think it was planning to attack China with an army of settlers

Well, I've played on this map a couple of times solo and China is always doing very well, so I think it's start is a pretty good one.
Nevertheless it's always tough against two [u]human</u> players, so hats off for BCLG100.

The big thing i found with China is its access to production for the cities and being able to build stuff quickly is a big advantage

Yes, indeed, the position of China is of extreme power because of simultaneous presence of hammers and food within the very same cities plus happiness and health resources which are abundant. In case of most of the other terrain locations, only one of these is present, so actually either growing or producing is quite tough at times.
