Enormous weirdness, or: WTF
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/p...009/press.html
Obama gets the Nobel peace price. For not being Bush.

Huh... well, I'm not sure what I missed that Obama deserves this, but wtf indeed: if this is what you get a Nobel price for these days I guess there's not much peacebrokering going on these days. Nice topic title though.

Although I favored Obama over McCain ( and still do, although the latter one makes the better fries), I also thought: Hey, WTF?
I don't think he deserved it yet, it's much too early. Although I still hope, that he will have deserved it in a few years...

Well in the last 20 years the peace prize became somewhat a political statement more than a real recognition of an actual act.
The trend just continues. The committee is simply asking Obama to continue on what he promised.

I'm afraid you're right, barbu! Or it might be a..... teaser, an incentive, like. "Now you MUST broker peace real hard..."

I don't see anything weird here. Somebody got the prize for something he did not do yet. Look, it happens all the time. How many times the Peace prize went to somebody who brockered something which never worked and was not intended to in the first place.
At least Obama is not a hawk and sounds peaceful being eager to cut down on force-based solutions. This already has a huge impact. For example, take Putin/Medvedev who were considered as quite peaceful compared to Bush yet now, compared to Obama, they are the hawks and instigators which they might truly be. Obama also acknowledges existence of global warming and at least tries to develop some means to overcome negative pollution trends. IMO, Europe should be happy with that being quite a peaceful community recently.

First thought that came into my mind: fascinating choice! Then when I heard the committee's reasons I was quite easily convinced.
I think the timing couldn't have been better. I think (contrary to what akots said) he got the award for what he has achieved already, yet the award will (or might) also be a boost for him and his support!

A nomination is something else than an election.
