Swine flu
So what do you guys think? A new pandemic or will it blow over like the avian H5N1 flu we had a few years ago?
Also wondering how dangerous this flu is compared to the normal 'seasonal' flus we get. Apparently 1% is the normal mortality rate, the infamous spanish flu that killed millions of people the beginning of the 20th century had a 2.5% mortality rate. This one's rate seems to be unknown untill now, but WHO says 1-4%. The real worry prolly isnt in the mortality rate but the fact that a pandemic will hit extremely much more people than normally and result in a huge amount of deaths absolutely speaking.

There seems to be a pandemic every few years whatever happened to sars?
Actually have an exam concerning the Spanish flu tomorrow (or at least theres part of it in there) and there has still been no critical advances in just wtf it was/why it happened and why it seemed to target healthy people.

IMO, it is pure bull, just some influenza virus, there are new serotypes every few years. If you get seek, stay in bed at home and get yourself some vitamins and anti-fever drugs and may be antibiotics and it should be OK. IIRC, lethality never reached 1% even remotely.

We'll be ok because we live a healthy life and have the proper medication. I think if this swine flu hits Africa it might do some serious damage. Yet by far not as much damage as HIV/AIDS does.

Well, it comes on top of the HIV. That certainly can't be good for Africa. Or any developing country with a generally lower health than we have.
I guess it's time to eat a little more fruit.

The thing that was problematic with the Spanish flu was that the casualties consisted mainly on young healthy adults, not the weaker usual victims of the flu. (this also occured with the smallpox when europeans arrived in America)
From the first news that came out of Mexico, the young healthy did die from the disease. But since, there are no casualties outside Mexico, so I'm unsure of what to think for the moment.
