Default domain expiring

Peeps,

civ3duelzone.com has expired. This domain was still held by anarres and I was never able to take it over because he sort of fell of the earth.

29th of april the domain fell free, so if we want it for nostalgic reasons it's up for grabs.

Any thoughts?

Do you guys want to keep the old civ3duelzone.com URL as well

POssible reason to get it back online is that it provided a way for old members to find this new forum. Although I think most have already found us or are gone forever

Other possible reason is pure nostalgia to get our original URL back

There is a problem with attachments in old spoilers. I've checked mine and they all are gone. Not sure how to correct this. Will manually changing them to url and civduelzone from civ3duelzone help? Were they actually there recently?

They were there at the time the forum was moved. Do you still have them on a backup? If you can put them with original names for some upload folder, can they be recovered at new domain? Since they just worked fine form the old domain, and you left the old CDZ online, there were no problems with that. IIRC, the attachment database could not be converted and it did not. It shows me having like 20 of total attachments while is should be over a couple of hundred.

Perhaps it's possible to do a global replacement in the database, changing all "civ3duelzone.com" to "civduelzone.com".

I think getting civ3duelzone.com would be a waste of money.

The attachments are not at civduelzone, they are still with the numbers they have at civ3duelzone. It can be changed and ProPain has the files and it can be anything, any folder in civduelzone just to be accessible with their original filenames. There are lots of pictures there and trying to figure out where is what would be impossible.

Only the URL expired, the actual data, including attachments stills sits on the server. So no worries: Nothing is lost!

Moving the data is an viable option. It would require a string replacement as well, but VB has a tool for that so should be no problem either.

Getting the URL will cost me 20 euro's or so and will save all hassle with moving and replacing. Otoh, doing a replacement is more elegant and solves the problem permanently. Will decide on monday, ISP isn't open till tuesday anyway.

If there's a tool to migrate all that crap I don't think we really need the old domain. No one ever came there anymore and it's not as if this new domain is impossible to find.

It isn't even migrating. It would come down to copy-pasting a directory on the server and then have a text replacement utility go through the database and change over img tags lines. Last bit isn't complicated but should be done carefully not te screw up things that arent intended to change.
