Read the post you quoted fully please, also keep in mind that a lot of what your colonies need can be produced locally except from some specialists. Still have to finish the game btw/

I reread your post, but I don't see how you manage to avoid the REF build-up.

Maybe it has to do with the level I play which is about average and atm the king sees no Gunnies, Horsies, minimal Military and call for Independance is at 0 everywhere. The Elder Statesman will have to work on Indepence and all other stuff is a matter of a switch.

OK, I'll stop complaining now. Dynabyte just called to say that my order is ready for pick-up...
Another imo is that a very compact colony is the way to go
New-France for example:

What do you mean "doesn't see"? You don't have the horses and guns equipped or what?

that's what I do in the original version as well. STockpile horses and guns in Wagon trains & ships so can build instant soldiers when you need em.

I've never tested to what extend this worked but I have always had the impression that this kept the REF smaller.

Also in the original you can island block iirc, so playing an archipelago map and putting units on the coast will prevent the king from landing near your colonies

You can't train veteran soldiers, so the old tactic doesn't work that good I guess.

I'm puzzled too Beam! Appearently, you succesfully hided your military power from the King.

This brings me to another question: What does trigger the King to increase the REF? Denying money requests? Your power? Percentage of peopel that want independence?

Earlier I explained the King had such a big REF, he didn't even manage to get his troops accross in 110 turns and tus won.......

The REF screen clearly not only shows your actual mi,itary power, but also the number of horses and guns.... So, if this truely works in the new col-game, it should be considered a bug.....

Maybe the King does see stocks of guns and horses, but not when they are in ships or wagons????

In the old game, I built drgaoons and stockpiled horses. Dragoons were never killed, but routed to soldiers .
