The thing is: There was no real check. The process was: Someone in the game produced a few maps and just checked very roughly. Then the host (who plays as well) picked randomly one of them. I didn't bother to propose someone from outside to check the map though. Maybe I should have asked one of you guys... As I know that I am probably one of the weaker players in the game and playing more for fun than to win, it is ok for me. At least, if I lose, I can blame external circumstances. And, I won't play this game for 10 years without winning!

My reason for moving would have been to get a "canal" city in those places where there is only 1 tile between the oceans and getting your boats across the easier way.
Probably not worth it. if the map is archipelago.

that start is a losing start - you need iron working to get your second (bad) food tile into use!

The gold should give you an edge enough to race to IW and mine the gems. The problem is the sugar (is it?) from memory is a crap resource. I would have probably moved south west one tile and hoped something came up, with the gold you'd quickly catch up.

It is not that completely hopeless. But it is somewhat low on food until you build a lighthouse and low on forest. So, it may be a hard start IMO. That said, you usually can get copper/iron somewhere close, go kill a closest neighbor with good lands and win. Otherwise, it is most likely an automatic loss IMHO. So, I'd say it's playable. Maybe ignore everything, rush to that lighthouse after mining and maybe AH. It will be better if you have some seafood under that gold to the east but then, you've got to move the settler a tile to NE to get to shore and get an extra hammer as well.
