Sorry Rik, but Nijmegen is about to be fucked by the most useless minister in recent history. You're getting Thom de Graaf as your new major....

Now I know Ivo Opstelten (major of Rotterdam) isn't everything, but Thom de Graaf is just a disaster waiting to happen...

I disagree. He loves that city and has his roots there. Also, contrary to many other ministers, his infection of the bureaucracyvirus is very mild.

It's just your average Non- "gekozen burgermeester"

Frankly - I'm going to look the cat out of the tree. I see no reason why he would be a bad mayor - nor do I see a reason why he would be particularly good.
We do love Guusje though; even though she shouldn't drink and drive.

Disagree. While his function was the most useless in recent history (prone to failure), he was the only one within the current batch of crap that spoke with the voice of reason. It went downhill when he was gone. The most useless minister is tied between Brinkhorst and Dekker; they both managed to achieve the opposite of what they should have managed. And because Dekker got kicked out, that leaves Brinkhorst as the most useless one. He didn't even manage to get himself deep enough in shit to get himself fired.

I do think he was the most useless minister, though a lot better than Pechtold. But as major I'm sure he'll be very useful to have. He knows his way in the Hague, and that's a plus! As you know, I'm not exactly a fan of the PvdA, but I'm very glad with Wallage as major of Groningen.

De Graaf was the one that was most vocal about the need for such a function to be created, so if the function is the most useless in recent history, then logic suggests that De Graaf was as useless as the position...

@KR: He may have roots in Nijmegen, but he's the type of person that just never gets things done (nothing significant anyway)...

@Rik: Don't get me started about the bullshit popularity contest of elected majors... About 4 years ago I lived in Leiden when there was one of those (not a real one, but more of an "opinie-peiling" kind of thing. You would not believe the amount of complete nonsense both candidates uttered)...

@Darkness - just touching that topic since the failure of the elected mayor was his downfall and now he becomes an appointed mayor. I find that ironic.
IMHO mayors shouldn't be elected really.

The last week was a horror show for the PvdA. I wonder what will happen the coming week.

I myself don't know what to think of this, actually. Of course the PvdA is much closer to CDA, so I should be unhappy. But the larger the SP, the more CDA and PvdA will be forced to govern together, in which case it is only better when CDA is larger than PvdA.

Rik, don't get too much hope. SP was always larger in polls than in real elections. (In 2003: 14 seat in the polls five days before the elections.) When push comes to shove, people will vote 'safe' and I think a lot of these potential SP voters will go back and vote PvdA after all.
