Unless you already have a reputation for breaking deals, then it doesn't really matter, isn't that right robboo

Well, the standard at CDZ has always been so much to honour deals I don't recall we ever had a rule in case a deal was broken. That's in Civ games. Like Stapel said Diplomacy (the game) is different, it is made for breaking deals.
I'd be perfectly happy if we agree to honour deals and no rule if you break. You simply don't.

But I would make an exception if there's just the two of you (for now), because indeed then you can break a treaty and no one will ever know. That's a bit lame.

As for breaking treaties, there should be no in game punishment. To take out the double cross takes away some of the uncertainty and excitement of the game. Besides the penalty for doing so is that in future games no one will trust you. Personally i don't agree to any treaties i'm not going to keep

Ok, let's not make things more difficult than they are. We simply have no rules about treaties.

How about formalizing all treaties. In chat or fly by PM's just count as negotiations which can always fall through. I've burned myself on fly by PM's, and I don't like making treaties that way....coughrobboocough....So don't weigh and measure my every word unless it says "Treaty".

i can tell the difference between a treaty and word of mouth, i'll only get seriously annoyed if its just a plain break but then ill just remember that for the next game.
