yes, you are missing the second group stage...
i proposed grouping those 16 into 4 groups of 4 and there top 2 going to the finals.

aaaah... so first grouping => 3 matches
2nd grouping (top & bottom) => 3 matches 3 KO rounds Is that right?

The cup starts in week 7, so next week will be the last non-cup friendly taking place. The draw of the cup will be held next week, wednesday evening or thursday morning latest.
While it is a good possibility there will be last minute entries (that has happened before), with 32 teams a 4x8 group system with a 2 round KO stages following up on that would also be a possibility, lots of diversity in playing a different side each week guaranteed, no problems with facing the same team twice. Only negative side would be that qualifying for the final would be very tough (only group winners would proceed to the semis), but then again, to win this acclaimed cup, you do need to have a very good team after all, and this system would make sure a good team makes it to the final, I suppose. That said, I think socralynnek's idea works at least as well, however, speaking om a personal note, it would require more planning and organizing of group draws and making up fixture schedules... and I fear I will be somewhat short of time in june-july (uncluding a holiday abroad) so if anyone could take over on occassion for organizing stuff later in the cup, that would be most helpful to keep things running smoothly.

9 matches, one of which between seasons, so my guess is that we start in week seven.

I would actually prefer 4 groups of 8.

That's possible, but then we need to start a week earlier.
