We have a nickname for the german national team, don't worry
Still, I'm wondering if die Mannschaft really isn't an actual nickname: you could regard it as "the team", and everybody would understand that you're talking about the national team instead of your local FC. The lack of a proper nickname might be attributed to a german inhibitance towards nationalistic exhibisitionism. Just a little generalisation on my part here.

Oh, but that's not at all the reason! No, beating others (up ) is a serious business, and no laughing matter! We can't have someon ednigrating our Nationalmannschaft by making a joking reference to it, or by making up a nickname! Jawoll!

First time I don't believe in my national team. A good reason is that... I don't love my team. And it appears that Argentina then France are the most disliked teams worldwide.

The funny thing is: A normal fan wouldn't use that (but at least understand). Over here, especially in sports articles, the writers are strictly avoiding mentioning a word double in an article. So if they write about our national team, then they use: Nationalmannschaft, DFB-Elf, DFB-Auswahl ( selection ), Jogis Jungs (Jogi is short for the coach, JUngs = (more or less) guys ), Team of the three times world cup winner etc... So, DFB-Elf is not really a nickname but more used like a synonym for the national team. Well, at least I am prepared if a baguette-seller in Paris wants to do some small talk again and talk about "La Mannschaft"... Back to real topic: Some good players are missing, especially bad fro the African teams, as they probably can't replace Essien, Mikel, Drogba like Germany can replace Ballack or the Elftal can replace Robben. Both are a loss, but not as bad (Yeah, I know, Robben might play, but for that the Netherlands probably has to advance first...but this time they have a weaker group...)

Are you actually talking about "DFB-Elf"/"DFB-Auswahl" instead of "Elf" or "Auswahl"?

Yes. Although Auswahl = selection could already be specific enough, it is not used over here.
The most common word used in talking is "Nationalmannschaft" and "Deutschland"...
