So I notice there's a save waiting for me, load up civ5 in dx10 mode by default, obviously loading hotseat saves in dx10 still doesn't work for me, rage a bit, civ crashes after 10 minutes of loading screen, rage some more, push esc, game closes, rage on, go to bed.

I'll be on holiday, I've enabled holiday mode. I don't see how GMR would allow for subs.

I think the easiest way to implement a substitute player is to surrender and have your sub take over your civ on the GMR-site. I don`t think this route makes for any collateral damage.
