Well, it might not necessarily be a bad things because if you can fix that basement, may be price will be increased even higher, so you would actually end up getting more of the apartment. The main problem is that you don't have the money for that from your own pocket. Well, it might be possible to come up with some sort of a deal with them instead of canceling the whole thing. Like may be split the expense or get loan without interest. But of course moral repercussions are horrible, after all this is the first yours and yours only piece of property.

That's mighty annoying. Indeed, if the French law is somewhat similar to the Dutch one you should be able to reverse the purchase. Stay sharp though, cos you don't want to be stuck with this appartment. If all is well the worst end situation is just a shattered dream...until you've found a new residence.

Some news...
The company that technically evaluated the appartment is run by the same guy who runs the housing agency. This is apparently prohibited and could be a case for a justice decision ! This was discovered by the (she)lawyer which is now managing the affair. Every party is OK for a meeting, which is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in her office. Fingers crossed. I'm gonna ask for the cancellation of the sale, with all the money (at least) returned. Not sure they'll agree though. If not, I might start a long process at the court...

It lasted one hour only, without any pause. I kept my position : cancellation of sale please. Nobody caved in. Some vaguely talked about giving some money, hardly enough to cover the reparations to come this year. They thought money was above everything, so this was not an option for me at all. The guy from the housing agency was very off-hand and disgusting. The ex-owner played the ignorant.
So there was nothing to agree on. Time for a trial. This will last several months/years, and I may be a loser in the end, even if I win it. I'm keeping the appartment of course, and will probably end up there during all that time.

Last smiley was rather very ironic. I'm not depressed, but my last child illusions on the world of adults are now gone. I'll make my best to have justice triumph, but deep inside I feel I'll get screwed in the very end, whatever the ending.

In Europe more than 99% of the law suits end up the way they should; you should have faith. In the end the only thing you'll have lost are the costs for this case.

@matrix - I am glad you put the caveat in there about 99% of EUROPEAN lawsuits being right.. I am afraid that the US percentage would be closer to 40-60%
