My observations:
The cycle phases out once the quarter circles in an area line up in the same direction in an area. After a long run the make up of the screen is more orderly than at the random start. This advocates starting in the middle to achieve maximum 'wave' effects that cause interference cause otherwise the circles will just align locally and the turning stops. Also it seems slightly better to start with a 'black ball' because it's your only chance to break it up.
