Default Dino Question

Hi there,

I guess this is mainly aimed at Killre but I suppose anyone can answer.

Is there any evidence to point towards the possibility that humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time?

I ask as I read an interesting (read hokey sounding piece of crap) from a Nature article in which a Maciej Giertych was trying to advocate looking at the creationist idea from a scientific standpoint.

I quote:

Quote:
quote:I believe that, as a result of media bias, there seems to be total ignorance of new scientific evidence against the theory of evolution. Such evidence includes race formation (microevolution), which is not a small step in macroevolution because it is a step towards a reduction of genetic information and not towards its increase. It also includes formation of geological strata sideways rather than vertically, archaeological and palaeontological evidence that dinosaurs coexisted with humans, a major worldwide catastrophe in historical times, and so on.

I dont think so, Dinosaurs lived in the Jurassic (200-150 million) and I think into the Cretacous periods which ended ~65 million years ago.

earliset known human is 40,000BC

Sound about right killer?

I guess it could also depend on your definition of human? when did apes evolve?

This statment seems to be complete pants. Geological strata forms in time not in a direction {up, down, sideways}

The rest of the quote seems to be a bunch of big words slapped together....infact more like a peice of text to defeat spam filters.

Meli, LINK PLEASE? Or fax me a copy, or scaan it or whatever!

If Nature is starting to publish such utterly false (proven about 100,000 times) nonsense, they need a really thorough shakedown. Heads off, would be a good start!

AAARGH!

Ugh... No wonder Science has passed Nature on the scientific paper impact scale...

EDIT:
OK, apparently that was last year. This year Nature's on top again...

I have it from a very reliable source, and I overheard a similar statement, that a Science editor said:
'What do you think we do - sell science? We sell advertising space! And controversy sells!' This in order to explain why a paper with 6(!) horrible reviews was still accepted and printed!

SO much for the standards of the two bigshot papers

Well I can't actually link you to the Nature article cos I aint subscribed.

The forum that talks about this and quotes from Nature is http://skepchick.org/skepticsguide/viewtopic.php?t=669 though.

As you can see it was a reply from this lady to the Nature article "Polish scientists fight creationism" in issue 443 of Nature. She replied in the correspodance of 443 (where the above quote comes from) and then in issue 445 Nature run "Anti-evolutionists raise their profile in Europe"

Hope this helps to calm your nerves Killer. I would still like to know how she can quote "Dinosaurs living with humans" though.
