Installed vanilla Civ4 and it works like a charm, fast even and this is the out of the box unpatched version as well. I remember that being slow as hell when i 1st played it on my old laptop. Somehow I lost my Warlords CD, got the case but CD isnt in there, so I havent been able to install that.
I'm running the game on 1680*1050 and though its still fast all text is rather small
