I doubt that this will work. You will be able to start the game, but some elements won't show up correctly or not respond to mouse activity. ... I know, cause stupid me once skipped the DX9 installation out of pure haste. (Clicking Yes to any and every Dialog box that would come up ... sometimes you really have to read that stuff...)
Anyway, I had a three-players MP game running, everybody no-cd patched. No problems.
