The thing that was problematic with the Spanish flu was that the casualties consisted mainly on young healthy adults, not the weaker usual victims of the flu. (this also occured with the smallpox when europeans arrived in America)
From the first news that came out of Mexico, the young healthy did die from the disease. But since, there are no casualties outside Mexico, so I'm unsure of what to think for the moment.
