Spambot policy

Although we're a spamloving forum, these spambots are a bit too much of a good thing imho. Besides what's the fun in spam when it's fucking automated anyways.

So the following policy applies to spambots which is an exception to our normal more liberal rules:

- Everyone is allowed to delete spambot post. Hell you even get brownie points for it as far as I;m concerned.
- Dear admins: please ban the associated accounts. Do not delete them as they might revisit and reopen the same account then.

Anybody who has any glorious ideas to prevent this annoyance is invited to come forward. Manually approving all members doesnt sound very appealing but will be a desperate measure to be applied when things seriously turn sour.

Your dear admin who feels all spambot creaters should be shot.

Is it possible to set new users to be able to open new threads only after they have 2 or 3 or 5 posts?

Shabbaman 05-12-2006 07:15

Sounds like a good idea akots.

If technically possible, then akots' idea seems like a good move...

I strongly disagree.

People should be able to make a new thread as that is the way the site works. We should not scare away new memebers with those kind of rules.

what about adding a text field that contains blurred text that spambots cannot read?

would take more time to post.

Or it could be required upon registration

Akots' idea has my preference as well, if these spambot postings continue appearing at they rate they are now. I have no idea how spambots function, but maybe it could be possible to have new members post a single post in a "registration forum" which then activates their full account?

This way, spambots are prevented from posting anywhere else on the forum, and it still allows new members to start posting topic right from the bat (since the registration post could be seen as part of the activation of their account).

I vote for the find a spam bot and report it to an admin who'll delete the post (whilst maybe taking note of interesting links) and then banning the user.

Anything else would intefere with legitimate new users and/or not be possible with the current forum code.

There's also a line of code that you can add to the end of a page, which apparently sends spambots into an endless loop. Don't know what it's called, but I like the idea.
