Map making issue: World size bug

At CFC Watorrey reported a bug that has consequences for custom maps, a.o. the ones I made for PBEM:

'In C3C 1.22, *any* biq that contains a custom map will use the OCN & tech rate setting for the world size of the last played random map. This includes the conquests that come with C3C and normal map sizes that are generated with the editor.'

I have played a lot of non standard sized games in the past year :(

Wow, that's really bad news...

Quote:

quote:I repeat... *ANY* custom map will use the world size setting of the last *played* random game. In PTW it was only with non-normal sized maps. Thus we have something else they broke in C3C.
And another quote there says both players will "enjoy" the same rules. Picking my brain about mapsizes I played since I joined CDZ I can only recall playing large once and tiny once. Rest is standard.

Is it really that bad if both players get the same rules?

Maybe not. But this bug should be known to the mapmakers and players. It will avoid confusion.

EDIT: I can't help thinking: 'This is another bug Firaxis won't fix'....

Well, if one uses huge map tech settings on a standard map, when plotting early science settings it can be pretty bad if one player goes max science, and the other does a 50 turn gambit. But there's nothing to be done against it for maps already made, so I guess there's no reason to make something big about it. Still, it's a very annoying bug coming from a patch, so not so very good work by Firaxis (again).

I can recall myself being puzzled with the number of cities needed for the FP, but I'm not really sure. I won't go into my saves (that I don't have anymore anyway), but it's possible that I encountered this. I suppose the OCN affects the number of cities needed for the FP.

I've worked with Watorrey in 'discovering' and testing the bug, and the main things it affects are: OCN (which does affect FP as well as corruption), Tech Rate, AND Barbarian Settings, which are also carried over from the last game played. So, if you were expecting Sedentary barbs, but the map-maker recently played a game at Raging, that's the setting that is flagged in the save game. What you set in the .BIQ file (even under Scenario Properties) gets overwritten. The easiest way to overcome it is to always start a random game with the world size and barb settings you want, THEN create the savegame from your custom .BIQ file, so it carries it over. Once the game is saved, the settings are locked in, so everyone playing will face the same rules.

I think we asked for raging barbs in my 1v1 with akots, but it appears that barbs are very sleepy in the game. :( I suppose it was screwed up... Do you confirm, akots ?

ProPain 20-09-2004 17:54

Now that explains the unwanted barb settings we've all experienced in some PBEM games!

akots 20-09-2004 18:11

They are as sleepy as they are in C3C unless you come straight to them with a worker. But I cannot complain there are not enough of them, there are indeed lots of them and I would say too many. IMHO, we are doing OK in our game, seems that barbs are raging indeed. :)
