It is time!
I have my own spot and a computer to spare, therefore I'm able to host another pitboss again! [dance]
The question is though: will it be Civ4 or Civ5? And is there enough enthusiasm for it anyway? So please answer the poll and we'll see. :) Note: I have only played one demo/trial game of Civ5, quite a long time ago already. So I prefer Civ4. :p But I'm sure I can enjoy Civ5 too. |
Civ5 pitboss works?
|
Uh, I dunno!

I'd like to play another pitboss. Got Civ5 (with g&K) two weeks ago and I have yet to finish my first game, so I won't be a strong opponent there. But I'd be fine with me to joina Civ5 MP game, maybe I'll learn something then.
Civ4 (BtS, of course) would be great too. |
Hmm, I should've figured out beforehand that I don't have the required amount of digital euro's to buy Civ5 + G&K's. :-/ But if this can wait till January, that shouldn't be a problem.
By the way, is pitboss available for Civ5, or not at all anyway? |
If you don't have civ5, wait 'til the holiday sale and pick it up cheap. As far as I know civ5 pitboss is still FUBAR, but you can play "hotseat" through http://multiplayerrobot.com/ just fine.
|
Hey, that multiplayer robot looks pretty nifty. :-) And indeed, let's see 'n wait if it gets on sale.
|
My PC wont play civ5 but i'm fairly unlikely to play but just wanted to stick my oar in!

Ok, well, I've played Civ5 now and I'm quite disappointed to be honest. [slanteye] Don't even know if I fancy hosting a pitboss of this if I don't like to play it myself anyway. Then again, I understood it's getting more fun with the expansion (Gods & Whatever), but then I'd have to spend even more money on it. [rolleyes]
So...unless someone has an awesome sales story for the expansion, I much prefer to host Civ4. [mischief] |

Disappointed? How come?

I can see where he's coming from, it's taking its time to grow on me.
Social policy, if i unlock one branch do i keep all the benefits when i skip to another branch? |
Yes, if you unlock a branch you get to keep it. You don't even need to unlock a whole branch before you invest in a new branch (though usually I unlock the whole tree as soon as I can to get the benefit from completing the branch).
The only thing with social policies you have to be aware of is that some branches can't be active simultaneously. In other words, you can't have freedom and be a nazi at the same time. Another thing is that the policy cost goes up with every new city (puppets don't count though, so if you capture a city, always make it a puppet!), so there's a major downside on going ICS. Spoiler alert: you'll find that if you never build more than three cities, it's ridiculously easy to get a cultural victory. |

here`s todays news (CDZ 2 spolier!!!!) http://www.civduelzone.com/forum/sho...488#post138488 |
Alright, I'm installing Civ5 on my ancient laptop. (It's fast enough to run it.) But I suppose I should also get God & Kings? Furthermore I need to see if I can get access to the router to open the right port. Finally I should check how that multiplayerrobot thingy works. Anyway, it's in the pipeline. ;)

The idea is that if you go with just three cities you'll have a guaranteed cultural victory; that is, if you manage to win before the AI does. The AI doesn't perceive culture as a threat, so all you have to do is to keep them from killing you. This is easy on a small continent or archipelago, as you'll only need a couple of ships. The key in civ5 SP is optimising cash flow, and keeping a low number of cities (and a small road network) certainly doesn't hurt that, especially in the beginning. Of course there are other ways to get filthy rich (mainly involving buying mercantile CS and turning your huge population into specialists), but by doing so you'll cut off the option of a cultural victory and access to social policies. I think that when you're new to the game, this is confusing: the game is presenting you with seemingly valid gameplay options, yet you are to ignore them. OTOH, on prince it doesn't really matter what you do ;) Quote:
After your first game you can always see if you want G&K. G&K is fun, there are new mechanics and civs. It doesn't change the game fundamentally (as in, everything revolves around gold), but religion is just funny. It does make the game easier though (as there's an additional way to get gold/science/culture). |
Well, I've played one game. (At least, I almost finished it.) Sure I don't know the exact proper tactics to win, but I sort of got the gist of it. It's alright to buy G&K too, but currently it's $29.99. I didn't check when it was on sale, but I can't really afford it now until February. The question is: should I start a Giant Multiplayer Robot game without it, or do you guys wanna wait until I've got the expansion?

religion brings some benefits, although I liked it better in civ4. still it gives some economic and happiness bonuses that might be obligatory for mid game survival. it`s brings more universal (ie benefits for other civs once it starts spreading) in late game. I haven`t seen any cultural conversions in early to middle game anymore. cultural borders are steady and do not swap anymore, so if you find some key tiles (resources or natural wonders) make sure to buy them fast enough or you might be kicking yourself for the rest your game for leaving it to natural border growth algorithmics. I`m trying to get into modding, but have trouble with visual studio getting to work on win 7, so modbuddy is not my buddy yet. |

I prefer G&K for both gameplay and easier to start up purposes.
