The Civ history tour 2012

An idea that has been in my mind for a long time is to do a competition that spans the different civ games. I was thinking along the lines of one game of civ 1 - 5 and a Colonization & Alpha CEntauri game.

We could do it in a GOTM format (with spoilers for thos who want to). Big advantage over MP is that it's more time flexible.

I think Civ I & colonization are available as abandonware for those who don't own the CD anymore. Being the junk hoarder I am, I still have those readily available. Civ II would be a problem for me, my CD is lost I can only find my fantastic world CD  But I"ve seen cheap ass copies offered second hand so no problem there.

All the other games won't pose any problems I suspect. Would people play if we do this?

Also we could make it simpler and only do CIV 3 - 5 and Civ 4 - Col for example.

World tour ftw. Although I still have some doubts you'll get some people to play civ5.

I think it's a cool idea! [:D] Nifty for on the anniversary year of CDZ. ;) I still have all the games, so no problem there.

Nice idea. I still have the Civ I floppies but not the floppy drive to install them lol. We could also play world maps, is there one in Civ 5 btw?

I was thinking we can start this up the 'Star Wars' way. We start with Civ III to IV and do Civ I, II, Col, AC later so we have some time to sort everybody out who doesn't have the games ready. Also we need to decide wether we play AC vanilla or AC inc addon. I dont own the addon so if we use that I need to get a 2nd hand copy somewhere.

Although I like the world map idea I'd prefer random maps because Matrix already did the world maps competition for Civ IV (and III iirc).

Not quite sure if we can exchange saves in civ V though, does Steam allow this? DOes it even include a map editor? Will need to check that tonight.

That looks fun.

However, I never played civ 1 and Col.

I do have a civ2 CD. IIRC, if you remove the videos the thing can zip in under 25Mb. The problem was to run it under XP. It did not work (last time I played, I still had an old win95 machine doing nothing). I gues there must be patches around.

Sound like fun. I don't have and never played AC and Col1 though and my Civ2 CDs don't want to install under Vista. I think it is possible to run Civ1 under DosBox although it is going to be ugly. IMO, the main competition would be to see whether there is a single person who can run all this stuff.

There is a map editor in Civ5 and there are few world maps. The editor is very hard to use though and the maps are full of glitches. The saves can be exchanged easily unless there is some DLC which other ppl do not have.

Anyone tried Freeciv?

Unfortunately for me the only CIV I can play is IV since I moved to a Mac I did not buy the others but I would certainly give that one a shot.

Played Civ I, CIv II*, Civ III, Civ IV, Col + Col II.

Never played AC or Civ V.

I'll get a new machine this year, with which I'll be able to play Civ V, which I probably will buy than. But that machine will surely be with Windows 7 (or Linux, but then I'd have much work to get my games working...), so I don't know which of these games I can run there.

I think this would be fun, but then again, I don't know how much time I'd invest for each game to get it running.

* I have Civ II - Test of Time, I don't know whether saves are compatible.
