I'm on both Facebook (although I wouldn't say I'm addicted) and LinkedIn which I've only recently joined.

On a serious note: Facebook is big, as in: it has a major significance, which will only increase for a long time to come. I expect it to become a political issue one day, if that is not the case already.

The reason I say I'm addicted is because it is the main medium for me to keep in touch with friends I made in Finland. But as a cultural geographer I'm fascinated by this 'global village'-phenomenon. One has to use it with care, though! Personal relations can derail because of Facebook, especially if you give too much weight to what happens on that site.

I use it increasingly less and less. Frankly keeping up to date with your privacy settings is a chore in itself as well as the fact that Facebook apparently 'owns' your photos you put on there.

I also find facebook useful to keep up with friends I don't see very of often. The photo issue is annoying though.

LinkedIn I am finding useful for job leads, definitely not a site just for chatting on.

I'm on it but i can't say i've ever been addicted to it by spending hours and hours on it. It is good in a sense of keeping in touch with people in between being able to catch up with them (espeically when they are in another country) but it seems to me some people spend way to much time on it posting stupid updates every half an hour instead of going out and getting a life and posting something useful once in a while.

I've been sick and tired with hyves for years, I won't even bother to make a facebook account. I did start spamming twitter though.

I joined Facebook last year, cause friends kept on insisting it was the place to be. I had much grudge against it before joining.

So I use it with many self-restrictions. No photo ever uploaded except profile photo. No stupid application. No friend with people from my parents' generation. ;) Very little info about myself, and none about my very private life (close friends know it, faraway friends need not to know). No stupid pages of interest except for friends' activities (my former rock band...). No "I like it" !!! Leave a real message instead. Etc.

Result : I use it less and less.
In mind : Diaspora, and other Facebook alikes, which could emerge soon. Pros : your data is your data, on your machine. :) Like an enhancement of the spirit of free software in the field of social networking.

I'm on it because all of my friends are, no more no less - you can look for the bear-brawling Frank Bolduc if you must.

But more importantly, who do I have to shoot to intimidate someone into giving me my forum back? :D Civ 5 is coming soon and I'd like to get back in civ shape before taking you guys on again in September :gun: :ar15: :viking: :ninja: :smileyfail:

I saw that grs is on facebook earlier, he came up as one of my 'people you may know' folk. I didn't add him but i recognised the name, perhaps if he stops by i will!

I almost created a Facebook account because someone twittered me that he had some photo's there that I'd like to see. In the end I don't think I missed it. On the other hand, I'm twittering like a madman now.

The photo issue almost got me to join Facebook as well, but then they were so kind just to mail the pics and I could happily skip facebook again.

I;m on twitter but I hardly twitter. Will add you to my list though Shabba: Keeps your friends close but keep your enemies closer :p

I have avoided twitter, I'm too cheap to pay the mobile costs to access it.

Can you actually ask them to delete your account? I thought the account remains there forever. You can only quit looking at it or logging in to fb.

From what it says, all my data (which are belong to them) disappears from the scene, and I can restore it before 14 days have passed, after which it is essentially lost. Note : I chose "delete account", not just "disable account". But then, God knows what they do with your data behind the scenes. :confused:

I thought that data disappear but the account itself remains dormant and can be seen (essentially empty) or logged in at any time. They obviously want to list as many accounts as they can so that their price for ads is as high as it is. For them, it is a great deal since they have an account but don't need to spend any resources of maintaining it. Not sure it is like that though, may be they honestly erase everything and you can re-register then if need arises. May be even with a same nick.

Well, the fact that there is an option "delete account" beside "disable account" kind of says it all. They might save a copy, but for the outside world the account will be lost.

This is pretty funny, considering that you are shutting down your account and try to lure people to "the next big thing". I find this funny, because of two things:
1. FB isn't getting any scarier, it was scary to begin with. They have the rights to whatever crap you come up with on their page, and they've had it for years. This sums it up nicely: http://www.frankwatching.com/archive...-we-bang-zijn/

When you're using the internet without something like Ghostery you're insane to begin with. Oh, and Apple and Google are doing the same. Have fun using your phone.

You can get Tor and be OK on PC. It does not work well on the phone though works fine on mac and linux. Functionality is crippled though but you should be safe.

Heh, I changed my FB URL, and now the link in the first post seems to forward to some fitness medicine company. :p

Indeed, it hasn't changed much. But when I posted this, I simply wasn't aware well enough about the big data thing.

I'm not leaving Facebook, by the way. I thought seen.is would be a good alternative, but it seems that's just as bad in terms of collecting and selling user data. But I think I'll create a Diaspora account in the near future.

These warez and music are made to be used and listen to. If you pay for the ware at some point or go to a concert, IMO you're not doing anything wrong. The personal photo's where meant to be shared with friends and not the entire world. Subtle but key difference.

The Pirate Party in Finland is using Facebook a lot too, which is more ironic, I would say. But their defense is that we simply want to reach as many people as possible, plus that our information and meetings may be known by anyone. By as many as possible even.

Lastly, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, the leader of the Icelandic Pirate Party: "Iceland should become for information what Switzerland is for money." :) I like that idea.

Photos are meant to be watched at. Movies and music aren't made to be used by the entire world either; they're intended for people who pay for them. To make matters worse, copyright law is pretty clear, where the rights to your photos on FB are ambiguous at best (because FB clearly has the rights and has had it for years, but I have serious doubt that it doesn't conflict with privacy rights... thus, ambiguous). But "intent" isn't on your side, it's with the big corporations. Hence, irony.

Not that I think you're wrong, it's stupid, and needs to change. I agree with you. But in the current context, you/we are wrong. On the upside, there seems to be an increase in postcount on CDZ.

I quit Facebook 4 years ago already and... I have never missed it.
I joined LinkedIn this year, but I rarely log in, and I wonder if I'll keep this account for a long time. I see these kinds of social networks as time-wasting bullshit more and more.

On the other hand, I subscribed for a dedicated server in a French datacenter. My long-term goal is to have many services running there. So far I have been able to exchange personal photos with friends via SFTP, chat with friends using an XMPP/Jabber server instance (webcam refuses to work, but I'll get into it), take part in a BOINC program (Internet grid-computing for science).
I intend to have my email server there someday, run different web sites, start a Git repository, and who knows what more.
So essentially I am becoming a total Linux nerd, using the line command for almost anything. :D

Linkedin is useful when you need professional visibility of your skills: also known as "I need clients to make money of". Those kind of content updates can be quite annoying. Linkedin groups might have some use when you're looking for feedback or knowledge. Depends on the work you're doing. For my profession it's useful, but I never use it. But it's significantly more useful than FB.

Linkedin is the main hub if you are looking for some high skill job or plan to be looking in the near future. I do use it regularly and there is much less bs there compared to other social media. Also, you can opt out of things you don't want easily compared to FB.
