Pitboss means, every turn lasts a day or so, and when I miss a turn the AI does it for me?

And everyone plays whenever he wants and loads the save to the server?

Kind of. There is no uploading saves to the sever, the turns are played simultaneously on the server. If you log in, you download the current state of the game to your disk.
