*Spoiler* Texas Hold'em
The start of another game. This one is a Huge archi map with low seas. Also no tech trading, no vassals, no permanent allies.
Here are the players Mauer- Frederick, Germany BCLG- Ragnar, Vikings Matrix- Hannibal, Carthage Robboo- Mansa Musa, Mali IanDC- Elizabeth, England Barbu- William, Dutch Robi- Justin, Byzantines Grahamiam - Tokugawa, Japan Bodean- Stalin, Russia Killercane- Churchill, England Akots- Augustus, Rome Nitro- Saladin, Arabia I picked the Byzantines for no special reason, just that i never played with them before. Now there has been some debate about the starts and should we reload or not, but here is the one i got as it stands. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1...z4000b1cm7.jpg As you can see the city has lots of things going for it, just not too much happening in the immediate surrounding, which seems be be what most people got. |
3880BC
We have continued with the start. There was i bit of a discussion about reloading but the agreed to continue. My POV is you play with what you have, and having a less than ideal start is part of the challenge. http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8...z3880b1km8.jpg As for my challenge, after climbing the hill i was begining to think i'd be ok if this was an OCC. Lots and lots of ice and tundra in all directions. Main for me now is to get Robigrad developed asap and to keep exploring for a suitable second city site. |
3600BC
A glimmer of hope as my warrior finds something other than ice or tundra, grassland, with corn no less. Still its a long way away for a second city. Hopefully the warrior headed in the opposite direction can find something suitable thats closer. Also i got to polytheism first so i founded hinduism. http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7...z3600b1zu2.jpg |
3200BC
With my exploring i have met two people. I met mauers scout 6 tiles NW of Robigrad. He seemed pleased to see the vast ice field and turned back without approaching my city. In Robigrad i have stagnated the growth in order to get the fishing boat out quicker since i can make way more food from the crabs being in nets sooner. After this one is done, the plan is to build a second, then a worker. I'm going to gamble no one will be in a rush to attack me http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/9...z3200b1zo3.jpg My other warrior which has been going stedily NE since turn one has found some more suitable terrain. He also found tow huts, one gave 83gold and the other some XP's for him. This turn i ran into Grahamiam's warrior. This could be a problem. If he is a lot closer to that area then me and can take up that space then i could be looking at only having 3 cities that are well spaced out and not that great. Hopefully he is a fair way off and i can grab some of that productive land for myself. http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/1...z3200b2nq5.jpg |
2720 BC
With a bit more exploring done i can see that this is not going to be easy for me. Grahamiam is not that far away from where i met him so it would be difficult to beat him to most of those areas where i could get a good city going. Thankfully my capital seems better then most so that will keep me in the game for a little while. http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9...z2720b1hq3.jpg http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2...z2720b2ps3.jpg For me to have a shot at getting somewhere in the game i'm going to have to take some risks, which means leaving myself open to an attack. My capital is going to have to produce enough GNP for two cities so infrastructure and tile improvement will take priority over military needs. Happiness is a big key since more of it gives me more pop to work those tiles My current research path is to get some archers mainly for keeping any barbs out and see if there is any copper nearby, then i'll go after writing and currency to boost the GNP. http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8...z2720b3ug4.jpg The demographics arn't to bad considering, doing well on the commerce front. http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5...z2720b4hw8.jpg |
2000BC
We've hit the 50 turn mark. Not much has change of late. My plan is still on track. To pass the time mauer and myself are trading insults via the diplomacy screen. On the domestic front, Robigrad has grown to size 5. All those furs are keeping my GNP near the top which has helped me hit the points lead. I'm going for a second worker before a settler since i have nowhere nearby to settle so the focus is on getting the capital developed quicker. I'm hoping there is copper in the city cross since that would greatly help my production. http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/2...z2000b1sg1.jpg |
1600 AD
I found the copper is not in the cross but further north. On the positive side with some deer up there as well it gives me a viable spot(barely) that not too much of a treck. I can also use it for a port to the outside world since Robigrad is completely iced in. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/3...z1600b1hl3.jpg I'm going for maths now so i can get the maximum out of the forest chops in the near future. |
1160BC
Things are moving along steadly. Robigrad is growing well, got plenty of food to work all those furs. Built a temple so now i have happy faces for a pop of 8. http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/7...z1160b1uu0.jpg Still doing well on the GNP, but everything else is still down. http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/5...z1160b2ul2.jpg I wont be finishing the library straight away. I wanted to get to pop 7 before starting the settler. Now that i have a spot to start a city near by i want to get it down quick so i can push forward onto greener tiles. Mauer passed on some interesting news. Apparently Nitro landed somewhere near Grahamiam, hope he can keep him busy enough for me to exapand a bit closer to Graham. |
At least you wont have to protect those fishing nets.
|
The one plus side of being surrounded by ice on land and sea. I don't have much too protect. Afterall who in their right mind would want to go to the effort of taking this icy hell off me.
|
775 BC
I have my second city in place finally. With it i can see Russian border to my north so there is either a strip of land connecting us or a small channel. I can also see there is a barb city nearby, where i'm planning my third city. My second city will have two deer and the copper in is cross which i guess isn't too bad considering the surroundings. I've had a look at where mauer is and he isn't any better off than me. Finally i know akots is nearby as well since i am showing a trade route connection to him but i haven't met him yet. http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/5...z0775b1de2.jpg |
When you have bad lands attack the guy with good lands! Didnt someone famous say that?
|
500BC
A little bit of a surprise for me when i opened up the game a couple of turns ago to find russian borders next to mine north of my capital. Maybe he was hoping to get the marble, but i'm not really sure. Even if my borders hadn't expanded the marble doesn't seem worth a city given the rest of the terrain. Not that i'm in any rush to take it off Bodean, he has copper connected, i don't yet. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5...z0500b1ba1.jpg Besides my main concern for the moment is that barb city. It standing in the way of my third city being put down which would give me iron and corn and some semi decent land. The demographics are not too bad. Still doing well in the GNP. Resonable numbers overall. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/7...z0500b2em9.jpg The plan for now is to get rid of the barbs and get my third city, then scope out Bodean and grahamiam to see who would be the better target for my expansion. Hopefully one of them will be possible to beat. |
275 BC
Things continue to move along. I will have alphabet soon so i'll be able to see who has what techs. Sklizavo will have its borders expand next turn so the workers are in place to get the copper hooked up asap. http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3...z0275b1ue0.jpg The current tech plan. Most of the wonders are already built so i'm sticking to this section of the tree for now. Metal casting and feudlism will probably be next in line http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3...z0275b2xy8.jpg The known world. http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/2...z0275b3mw5.jpg While Ian and barbu seem to be leading the way i'm still in a good position in this corner of the world. If i can be ahead enough in techs to be a generation ahead in units then i wont need to worry about the lack of production. |
200 BC
So much for my get rid of the barbs, set up a third city then have a look at who i might be able to attack plan. http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/9...z0200b1hd7.jpg I do wonder why i bother making plans sometimes[rolleyes] Anyway i'll be jumping onto a war footing and rushing some units over the next few turn, also i'm hitting up mauer for some horses. I'm giving him furs on credit at the moment so its time to call in that bill:D Edit- the copper will be hooked up next turn so both those warriors will be upgraded |
125 BC
To say i'm alittle confused is an under statement. Bodean puts his stack on my border then does nothing, just sits there. I guessing he wasn't look to surprise me. I did begin to wonder if it was a defensive placement but it doesn't make sense to be so provocative. http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/7...z0125b1pl3.jpg Well if he isn't planning on attacking me, then i will make the move. Mauer gave me the horses so i'm building some chariots. I rushed the first one. I also rushed a second archer in Sklizavo just in case he tries a landing there. So if he doesn't move in the next few turns i will. |
Hurray for some action. Whats in the stack?
|
2 archers 2 axemen. You can see the info in the bottom left corner of the last screenshot
|
you must have posted the wrong pic then, it only shows tile info,
EDIT: Oh, i see now...second last screen shot.[hammer] |
Quote:
i knew what i meant even if no one else did [mischief] also orginally edited your reply instead of replying to it[uglyham] details are obviously not my strong point Anyway back to the game, its not a scary stack by any means, really surprise was the biggest thing going for it and he blew that. Really Bodean's given his stack a bit of a hospital pass[medic] Which brings us to.... |
100 BC and 75 BC
Now i log and and notice Bodeans scout made his way back towards my capital. Must have got a real shock to see my chariots. Also noticed he whipped in his city Ellie Mae. I might not be a genius but i'm thinking Bodean (after trying to work out how i got chariots) realised his axes were in big trouble and whipped a spear. So i brought forward my plan and positioned my troops for an attack next turn http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/1...z0100b1mu3.jpg Then i logged back in later and waited for the new turn to tick over. The only bad bit was the archers would defend against the chariots. http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9749/byz0075b1je5.jpg The archers had a half decent chance of winning since my odds where 66.2%. The first archer put up a decent fight and nearly took half the strength off the chariot, the second one didn't even scratch the paintwork. Job done[charge] i pulled back out of range of the axes. His only option is to retreat or lose them too. |
50 BC
The turn passed and Bodean hadn't made a move, which was too bad for him. http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/3935/byz0050b1xj7.jpg I took out the scout for good measure. Sticking one of my chariots on the hill i can see he hadn't whipped a spear so all the better. Unfortunately both axes took a bit of beating so i'm in no position to rush the city, which is ok, the main thing was getting that stack out of the way which i did with no losses. Catapults are not too far away so i can wait a bit. |
50 AD
Bodean may be a noob but he is persistant and unlike some i've come across does seem to be learning http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/6...z0050a1eg1.jpg Axemen and archers got wiped so in come spearmen and swordsmen. I am guessing he shipped them in the last couple of turns so he is not short of units which probably means for me to expect a long conflict. I'll have another axe in a few turns then i'll build some cats to deal with the stack when it eventually moves towards me. Hopefully i'll get time to sneak a settler build in so i can try start my third city. |
150 AD
I built a galley in Sklizavo. I could see Bodeans worker there all alone so i thought i'd take a chance so i loaded up a chariot and sailed across. Would have been in good shape to pinch the worker had the swordman not been in range, but at least i've had a decent look at what i'm up against http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/7...z0150a1oi4.jpg Further south Bodeans brought a few more units into play. I'll have some cats soon so that should help tearing through that stack http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/445/byz0150a2nb5.jpg |
250 AD
The war with Bodean is over. He offered a peace deal and i accepted. It will run for 50 turns to turn 175. As much as i would have liked to get something out of it i was losing time in getting some of the last bits of decent land under my control. My suspisions about the barb city being destroyed by Graham where confirmed. He didn't settle on the same spot so i can still squeeze in a city but getting the corn will be difficult. http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/7972/byz0250a1be8.jpg As you can see from the demographics i've fallen behind a bit from earlier http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/8159/byz0250a2os4.jpg The main plan for now is getting some more cities down quickly, catching up a bit to the rest and being in better shape to take on Bodean or someone else next time around |
[whatsthis
Ok, so you're in quite a tough situation. What's your plan with Bodean: prepare for a second war, or stay at peace? By the way, I think I would've asked for a restart in your position. [rolleyes] |
Quote:
Basically as things stand - i have an indefinate peace with mauer, we are acting in a sort of partnership. Help out where we can, not step on each others toes, although the latter is easy since we have 12 odd tiles of just ice seperating us. - i made a peace deal until turn 175 with Bodean, however mauer has been talking with Bodean about taking akots on (he is somewhere north of them). If that is the case then i promised i would extend the deal further so Bodeans free to throw everthing at akots. He is pretty powerful from what they tell me and i guess you would have a fair idea of that too;). - i am trying to secure a deal with grahamiam for at least the short term, that way it would give me/you/us some time to settle some more cities founded and get some infrastructure built like forge, market ect. without having to worry about squeezing in unit builds. If i can't get a deal with Graham then some units will have to be built because his power chart is on the rise. Hopefully he is more worried about nitro then little old me:D I'll post another update or two before i start my internet switch and i will be able to check in during the time a couple times a week when i'm visiting friends and family. |

Since the last screenshot my nation has doubled in size to a massive 4 cities[beer1]. And with that my expansion is just about wrapped up for the game, unless i'm really desperate, then there is a snow covered hell in the south east with fish and fur. http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/5...z0520a1sa9.jpg The only other real option for advance is Bodean but that plan is on ice for the moment(ha, i didn't mean that pun). A new development i have signed a peace deal with Grahamiam. It is however short, only to 1000AD but at least it gives me a chance to get my new cities up and running, also hopefully i build on this agreement for long term peace. I also got him to agree to open borders however we can not have any units crossing into each others territories. A little paranoid in my opinion but i'm not in a position to argue. Further afield it seems Ian has been struck with wonder lust. He is upto 6 now. http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/443/byz0520a2fm8.jpg And the demographics, with only 10 players left they are near the bottom as expected. But if i can get a good peaceful run to develop my cities a bit then i could be pushing a top 5 spot in most areas. http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6...z0520a3sj0.jpg |

A fair bit of time has passed since i was away. Another big thank you to Matrix for playing on my behalf. A bit more exploring was done and now i have a good view of Bodeans domain, if there is one person i have a chance to take on and win it him http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/2...z0900a1nx4.jpg However that pretty much hinges on Grahamiam. Our current deal expires in 1000AD and if he decides that he doesn't want me around then there isn't a lot i can do about it, he could easily grind me down As for the demograhics i've slipped a little further down the rankings as the other have built more cities although i'm second in land area[confused]. Pity most of that is ice. If i can avoid a war with Graham once i get CS i should be able to move up some spots http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1...z0900a2wh9.jpg |

I get to live a little longer:D. Grahamiam has renewed our peace treaty. There is a few little extra bits in it like completely open borders. I'm also going to send some missionaries his way to. While this means my game is going to be on the quieter side on the face of it, Mauer and myself have been formulating a bit of a plan to make things a little more interesting. I wont give it away just yet but to parphrase Mauer, it will be fun to see just how much two tundra loser civs can influence the game. Anyway back to the game itself, one of Simon's caravels went sailing past in the last few turns. We don't have a trade route but i can see he has quite a few techs on me. This turn i found this upon opening the game. http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/4...z1000a1iv0.jpg An interesting quest although i'm a bit torn about going for it 10 swords is a big investment. While an extra iron resource would be great if it was in the capital there is no way of making sure its there. The bonus for Heriditary Rule (which i'm in) is not laid out so i don't know if it would be useful or not. If anyone knows i'd love to know:D The nation is plodding along. Thankfully i'll have CS soon so i can get bureaucracy which will be very handly in my situation. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7...z1000a2xj9.jpg |
I just did this in single player "out of the box" (not updated) bts, I assume it is the same. You do not get an extra iron source. If you are NOT in HR all swordsmen units get city raider 1 promotion. If you are in HR you can take as an allternative (NOT adidional) all mellee units get drill 1.
|
That's not really a bonus, is it? [rolleyes] What if you've already upgraded them to City Raider I and you choose that one? I suppose that would waste a promotion.
But it's still an interesting task. You could do quite some damage to Bodean with 10 swordmen. :D |
Arrgh... I can't read. I saw it as aquired not required. And the promotions don't make it seem worthwhile for me (since i only have 1 good city) to do. I rather wait for maces and completely dominate him
Thanks for the info :D |
I thought it was a bit light for a result of a quest, but it is a whole lot easier than the ones that require you to build that many buildings so I guess it makes sence.
Out of interest, you can get the details of all the quests and random events at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=236727 . I go view source (CTRL-U) then search (CTRL-F) and put in some text from the pop up. |
Thanks for the link thats very useful :)

I got a map from Ian last turn. It covers most of the world and pretty much show how screwed over i was by my start. http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/3...z1020a1tq5.jpg Akots is the one sitting pretty at the moment although Ian is also well placed. Heres a look at the tech situation, i'm more or less behind everyone except Bodean, he definately represents my best chance at advancing my borders. http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/5...z1020a2ju4.jpg Switch to Beauro has lifted my GNP to a more competative level. http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/7048/byz1020a3my0.jpg |

Been a while since the last update. A few things have happened in the meantime. Bodean went in and attacked nitro and took a city off him. I sure a big reason for that is nitro was away for a few turns. Anyway he will soon have other problem as Grahamiam is preparing an attack. I alluded to it a few posts ago but for the rest of this game i'll be doing my bit to help Graham out to try and win. My start means i can't do much but it should be interesting to see if i can help change the course of the game. Mauer will be giving support as well but he has different things to do at the moment. Also given that having an alliance tends to make you a target in everyone elses eyes we are going to keep this cooperation under wraps. On a positive note i got my holy shrine built so i'm getting a whole bunch of gold to spend along with boosting my research. I'll be spending some of that gold on upgrades on my more experienced units. Heres a look at my nation http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/1126/byz1160a1dz3.jpg http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7...z1160a2aj0.jpg As you can see Grahamiam has quite a stack going to Bodean. A complete mismatch since Bodean's best unit is a swordman My GNP got quite a jump from the shire giving it some repectiblity http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8...z1160a3zh8.jpg My aim now it to take Elle Mae off Bodean once Graham gets onto his island and starts cleaning up there |
1250 AD
Its war![estwing] With the completion of my caravel and my stack in place i went to war with Bodean. Not exactly a risky step since Grahamiam has be pounding him the last few turns. My small stack of maces, swords, and crossbows with a couple of cats thrown in should have too many issues, since Bodean only has swords, spears and archers. If all goes well and my maths is right in 5 turn Ellie Mae should be mine. http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8...z1250a1ck7.jpg As you can see Graham already taken out 2 cities and is moving on the capital. Apart from losing a couple of boats he has had a smooth ride. http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8804/byz1250a2pe6.jpg |
1280 AD
I have taken Elle Mae, and a turn sooner than i had expected. In the end i lost a crossbow (with a 78% chance of winning) and a cat that was sacrificed for some collateral damage. http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/2...z1280a1cu9.jpg I got a great general out of it too which was a nice bonus. With that it brings my involvement in the war to a close since Graham is mopping up Bodeans two northern cities over the next few turns. I'll be pumping out some missionaries to get a few more cities under my religion and with that some more gold from my shrine. Also on the other side of the world BCLG took out Robboo so when Bodean's finished off we will be down to 8 |
1500 AD
Time for an update. Bodean has finally lost his battle against yynek (who took over Grahams civ Japan), so we are down to 8. Yynek also gifted me on of the former Russian cities to bring my total to a massive six cities. http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1...z1500a1nf3.jpg I along with mauer had been hoping to change the dynamics of the game by trying to help out yyenk in catching up to the two leaders akots and ian but as we have explored more and gotten more information it has just shown how impossible that is. Akots and Ian are definately the two superpowers with daylight third. The only real chance for anyone else is for the two of them to get into a long and brutal war with each other. Given their temprament in previous games i have played with them i wont hold my breathe. http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9...z1500a2jx0.jpg http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/228/byz1500a3kq2.jpg As for me, there isn't too much to do except find ways to maximise what i have. The one real possiblity of making advances is against nitro who is in a similar position to me in development. |
