12 - Meet the Russians to the east. They have Bronze Working but my Cerimonial Burial isn't enough. I will have to find some more civs...

18? - Build my first settler.

25 - Double rush a granary in Mecca.

26 - Meet a Mongol scout far from home. Move the scout and I meet Rome too!

28 - Buy Alphabet from Rome for Pottery, Ceremonial Burial and 105 gold.

Sell Alphabet and Cerimonial Burial to the Russins for Masonry, Bronze Working and 4 gold.

Sell Masonry to the Romans for Warrior Code and 89 gold.

Sell Alphabet, Masonry and Ceremonial Burial and 10 gold to the Mongols for The Wheel.

Set science to maths min research.

49 - Buy Writing form Rome for 255 gold and 6 gpt. Sell to Mongols with contact with the Russians and 2 gpt. Shit. I hoped to get more contacts, but there are none to buy. :( I hope it's not just us 4 but I guess it will be a continent with 3 AI each.

58 - Rome demands 20 gold, I refuse and they declare war. No problemo, I should easily be able to hold them off and extort something.

Here is my empire at turn 66:

Wow, I can't believe I've left this spoiler for so long! [eek]

68 - Russia demands 27 gold and TM. In 20 turns I would let them declare war since I have an east front to defend, but atm I just don't have the units or barracks to do it. I also get Maths next turn on min research and I need to be able to sell it.

69 - Research Maths. Set to Currency @ Max.

Sell Maths to Russia for Map Making and 62 gold.

Sell Maths to the Mongols for HBR and 38 gold.

Make peace with the Romans, giving Maths and getting 7 gold.

85 - Research Currency. Sell to Rome for Code of Laws, Mysticism and WM.

Sell Code of Laws to Russia for Furs and 20 gold.

Sell Currency to Mongols for WM and 69 gold.

86 - Damn. Rome now has Philosophy. Buy it form him for WM and 186.

Switch research to Republic (24 turns).

90 - Lose a Galley in search of new lands. :(

91 - Rome demands 23 gold. He is at least 15 or 20 moves away so i say no and he declares war.

Russia establishes an embassy.

104 - One of my suiside galleys (all the way in the north) manages a crossing and finds new land.

106 - Research Republic. I switch this turn - I always forget how nice that is with a Religous civ.

Give Republic to Russia for Furs, Literature WM and 160 gold.
Give Republic to the Mongols for Construction and WM.

107 - My suicide galley finds Carthage! [coool]

I trade Construction and Literature for contact with the Vikings (Matrix), the Greeks and the Ottomans, and 98 gold.

110 - Research Polytheism.

The Russians already have it - they must have got it the same turn as me. Their free tech is Monotheism.

Give Poly to the Ottomans for WM and 3 gold, and gift Currency to them. They get Feudalism as their free tech.
Gift Poly and Currency to the Greeks and they also get Feudalism! :D

They are on either side of Matrix (Vikings), and it will be hard for him to take them now.

Give Republic to the Greeks for Feidalism, WM and 3 gold.

Give Poly to the Mongols for a worker, WM and a few gold.

111 - I declare war on Russia and take 2 cities. I am suprised to find only 1 spearman in one of them. [:o]

113 - Take Svestapol.

116 - Auto-raze a Russian city with Incense, I a will re-settle it.

119 - Take Moscow. [dance] Just 1 more city to take and then I will make peace with Russia.

120 - Make peace with Rome geting 37 gold and WM.

121 - Take Smolensk. Russia has just 3 cities left, all disperate.

122 - Take the last useful Russian city and make peace getting Monotheism, 77 gold and 6 gpt.

132 - I have been building up Horsemen, and now I have researched Chivalry.

137 - I have been saving money for upgrades. I have 8 Ansars now and another 21 horsemen, and I'm getting 86 gpt.

My Palace is right on the edge of my empire. I am hoping for a Leader with my upcoming battle agianst Rome to rush my FP in the far north. Since I have few cities close to my palace I am hoping to get a much stronger FP core. [groucho]

Looking back I see how long my voyage to meet the other continent was. I lost 2 galleys off the coast near my palace before my northern galley made it. Strangely enough Matrix hasn't managed to find us yet so his tech costs are still way high.

139 - Finally I go for it and attack Rome. I take 4 cities (including Rome itself!) and auto-raze another (bottom right in map).

The Romans are in awe of my culture (due to massive temple building very early), and from 20 captured citizens only 4 are resisting! :D

140 - Matrix has just come out of anarchy.

141 - Shit!! I just realised that I attacked Rome a turn or two early, before my Peace Treaty ran out! [cry] [cry] [cry]

Bugger. My rep is shot for absolutely nothing! [mad]

142 - Take Byzantium and Pompeii. I cut of Rome's horses and iron on the first turn, so now I am finishing off his last Pikes/Med Inf, then it's on to spearmen.

I'm still really gutted about my rep. [sad]

144 - Take Ravena and Antium. I am down to fighting spears now, although there Med Inf and legions still moving around. My military advisor says they are stronger than me, so I guess their troops were off in the far NW taking out the Mongols. I really need a leader for my FP...

145 - Take Hispalis, found Shiraz. I can see the Roman trooops coming back home (or to what was their home) and I may have to make peace soon. If I don't get a leader the money I am saving will have to go on rushing Ansars rather than rushing settlers in my new cities.

146 - I start digging in for a defensive war, and I rush some units to help.

152 - Research Engineering. After several turns of picking off Legions and MI in the open I have a stronger army than Rome. This is a good sign - I will finish them off now (maybe leaving a couple of token cities for unit promotion).

153 - Take Syracuse.

155 - Take Brundisium.

156 - Research Invention.

I take another 2 Roman cities and get my first leader!! [dance]

That drought was terrible. I must have had about 50 elite wins by now....

Sell Engineering to Carthage for 66 gpt and 26 gold.
Sell Engineering to Greece for Theology and WM.

157 - I build my FP in Rome. [coool]

OMG! After a huge drought I get another leader, after only 4 or 5 more elite wins. :D

Take 2 more cities from Rome and raze a third. One of the cities is the old Mongol capital with the Pyramids. :D

158 - Minimap:

Now I have my FP I will build my second core up and then prepare for a Cav invasion.

Matrix is still in need of several ancient era techs. I can only think that he has turned off tech research since the Greeks have built the Great Library 6 tiles away from him... [hmm]

he he, looking good here! [cool]

anarres
29-12-2003, 22:20
Looking even better now! :D

160 - Research Education.

Take the last Roman city. :D

164 - Research Astronomy.

166 - After much internal debate I decide to use my leader for an army rather than rushing Cops, or waiting to rush something else. None of the middle age wonders are built yet, but I don't think any are of great use to me (apart from Smiths, and that means researching an extra tech).

168 - Research Gunpowder.

172 - Research Chemistry.

176 - Research Physics.

180 - Research Magnetism.

184 - Research Theory of Gravity.

188 - Research Banking.

191 - Suddenly the 3 remaining AI all get Gunpowder and 2 of them have Astronomy. Wow - that happened in 1 turn, I guess 2 of them researched different techs and got them the same turn. I salvage what I can by selling Astronomy to Greece for Printing Press and WM.

192 - Research Metallurgy and enter the Industrial Age! :D

Trade 4 lux's and saltpeter with the Ottoamans for Wines and 11gpt.

196 - [lol] Cartage demand Iron! I refuse and they back down...

I research Steam Power!! [dance]

197 - Matrix sends me an offer of Gems, presumably he wants a lux in return. I only just traded for my 5th lux from Carthage and I suspect Matrix needs it more than me, so I refuse the deal.

201 - Research Electricity.

How far is Matrix down tech wise?

anarres
30-12-2003, 10:38
By quite a lot! I think Matrix and all the AI have (at best) Chemistry and Astronomy.

It's kind of embarrasing I haven't invaded Matrix yet, but next turn I get Rep Parts and then 4 turns later I will get Mil Trad. I have Ansars and boats waiting to take them when I get Cavalry.

30-12-2003, 10:45
Indeed you are purposely making the pleasure last longer in this one...:D

anarres
30-12-2003, 10:53
No, it's just that the timing was bad. When I got Steam I considered going for Cavs then but Matrix's army was bigger than mine (F3), and so I decided to get Rep Parts first.

It's worth noting I've never had more than 30 fast units in this game (and very few slow ones) - I've just managed to time the wars right with the AI.

Skyfish
30-12-2003, 12:06
aha... so *now* you believe what the F3 advisor says ? [groucho]

anarres
30-12-2003, 13:13
Yep, and in fact, when I used to say it told you the average AI military I was 100% wrong. I never knew that if you changed the army on the right hand side the military advisor would give you info about just them. [:o][:o][:o]

heh. That's a huge amount of info I was playing without for a few years!

[thumbsup]Finally! I had pretty strong proof in some of my games (like vs Plux and Wildfire), but it is good to see that you also found out :D

Finally ! :D
Workers and settlers are still taken into account when the advisor judges your opponents army though ;)

anarres

Sky, not according to the studies I've seen on CFC. They say it now uses a formula based on A/D values (unlike earlier versions where it counted shields).

207 - Research Replaceable Parts. In 4 turns I get Mil Trad and I can upgrade my Ansar army.

209 - Build Leo's as I have a pre-build ready and nothing better to go for.

210 - Sell Physics to Carthage for 31 gpt and 60 gold.
Sell Physics to the Ottos for 90 gold and 5 gpt.
Sell Physics to Greece for Silks.

211 - Research Military Tradition and spend 1400 gold upgrading 70 Ansars to Cavs.

216 - Research Nationalism and mobilise.

220 - Finally I launch my offenseive, 80 Cavs supported by a few Infs just landed in Scandanavia! [groucho]

221: Copenhagen falls, followed by Trondeim. Now I take Hared, Reykjavik, Bergen and Birka, which I had to found a new city to reach. I lost 1 Cav against the Musket in Tronheim, and 3 against the Musket in Bergen. All the other cities fall without loss. I capture 3 wandering workers for my workforce.

222: Battle report from Matrix: one medieval infantry lost against one cavalry in the north; that one has 1 HP left.

I take Aarhus, Odense, Oslo, Stockholm, Alesund for only 1 Cav lost. Another couple of workers join me.

223: Research Industrialisation. Here is the current war front:

My Cav army takes Mycenae killing a Musket and Pike. Take Stavanger for no loss and lose 1 Cav taking the Pike at Herakleia. Take Molde.

224: Take Thermopylae, Sparta and Athens for no loss. Near Athens I see my first Beserks! I kill the Med Inf and 2 Beserks on the mountain next to Athens, and the Elite Beserk on the Hill.

225: Take most of Greece - it is defened by Hoplites. [:o]

Matrix told me on msm he just lost fought his units right down against Greece, so I had absolutely no resistance from either Martix or Greece...

226: My forces move in to position to take Matrix's last 2 cities.

227: At last, the final blow is delivered and Matrix is dead!

Congratulations, anarres. I owe you fifty bugs...for Civ3 lessons. ;) (j/k)

I don't understand how you're able to take out the Russians so fast! And I didn't loose units when fighting Greece, but because of a culture flip, which is why I don't understand you have so little resistence from the Greek. Perhaps because they were still at war against the Ottomans? Unlikely.

Anyway, I saw soon enough I didn't stand a chance against you. But I never finished a PBEM before this one. [eek]

Matrix
14-02-2004, 23:52
By the way, I wonder how much the blockades at the passages of my land limited my ability to grow. Yet when I look at you, you were quite cut by the Russians as well, having about the same amount of cities. [hmm]

Let's hope I'll have a better chance in Rise of Rome. ;)
