We restart our game and this is the start I get:

Gems and grapes nearby, that's nice.

I start building 4 scouts, meet the celts and built a warrior to prevent a really early death by Celt.

3250BC al those scouts pay off. Advanced Tribe. Really amazing fact, Salamanca is building a settler (I forgot to change build for the hut pop!) So apparently you can get an advanced tribe when building a settler. Niagara Falls is a bit away from Salamanca but that's np cause it will serve well to block the celts.

You might think about moving the city one tile, towards the river. Or is it not worth it?

In 1625 Mapmaking is invented, my scouts have done some fine mapping so I manage to trade my map around and get WM, some cash and 3 techs.

My aim is to block the celtic expansion so I'm building outward in. After this turn it turned out I had 4 techs over sky, writing, literature, mysticism and IW. My guess: he's researching mathematics.

Turned out to be a good guess, he finished it the turn after this one and traded himself back in business. He now has all techs I have but I presume he got all techs in the game now. I'll have to wait a bit 17 turns to go to poly.
