View Full Version : Open spoiler: Persia in Once More Unto the Breach

So yeah, Maarten started a pitboss and I have (literally) nothing else going on for a few months. Here's my uneducated opinion on what I'm doing wrong, and sort of a logbook to keep my ideas straight.

Plus, you know, screenshots. I heard those give points.

MILD SPOILERS

Here's the playing field:

https://i.imgur.com/rZLHC11.png

By the time I got in, there remained only the Americans, French, Babylonians and Persians.

Cyrus it is.

And thus, the République du Québec establishes EGGnSPAM on the western coast, with designs upon THE WORLD (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXdtafGdIVM&t=1m01s).

SERIOUS SPOILERS NOW

GET OUT

(I mean, if you play this game. Strange spam from outside sources is mandatory, and welcome.)

Here we go.

https://i.imgur.com/hB51jop.png

Quick scouting reveals stone, pigs and seafood. I have nothing towards bronze or religions, 2 techs towards pastures and a UU that demands horses. Easy tech choice:

https://i.imgur.com/QIVFtgL.png

Find horses, grab them, expand to the best early city locations and conquer the rest.

Cyrus is Charismatic (extra :) and faster promotions) + Imperialistic (faster settlers + GGens). Early, I'll need to focus on getting a healthy revenue and health care. That will enable an army and growth. More :) also means more :whip:

Here's EGGnSPAM, circa Turn1

The romans have played but haven't increased score. Possible move-settle. IDK if starting locations were pre-balanced - if not I may have a sizeable advantage with my starting 21.

Since I start with hunting, Scouts will be deployed. With over 8 players, 1 or 2 should do before workers and workboats. wait, wasn't it worker first in CIV? Anyways, need techs before worker so scout first.

Double scratch that, worker (15) will spawn after tech (10) is done AND those pigs are +3 food. It'll be a lonely 2 weeks for that scout. Hope he pops a nice goody hut.

Beorn

Goody hut with medium gold. Beats a slap in the face.

https://i.imgur.com/IzMIAiA.png

Also, more forests and plain hills. Gonna be hard on commerce though I may be able to go GP economy with the pigs. More scouting needs to be done before that.

The capital does, nonetheless, have TONS of whip and chop potential for early wonders. Or an early stack of doom. We'll know what the map decides for us in the first week or two.

CIV was circle-scouting not straight-line scouting right? Guess I mostly need to know where to settle anyways. Since I'm not making units, circles will have to do.

STONEHENGE

Tons of chops, foor for whip, fresh water, stone and pigs for city 2. Stone for Stonehenge which gives a free monument everywhere, I get free happy from monuments. Man, the CFC war academy is great.

Behold! the glory of the SW lands.

This area shall be dubbed: Buttfuck Nowhere Peninsula.

Another goody hut, another medium gold.

Also, something interesting today: score increases.

https://imgur.com/MRoN9vD.png

I guess that means most of them got a warrior at the same time, or growth at the same time. Also, that the mongols are ahead from goody-hutting a unit.

Let's hope a worker will pay off before long. I'm confident that it will, with 2 pigs.

There are sheep, so it's not only buttfuck country.

Beorn
27-02-2019, 02:39
Got AH: no horses either. Anywhere within what I've uncovered of a first ring anyways.

Those sheep better put out.

Also:
- some civs have 2 techs (I suspect the mongols got one from a goody hut),
- I was the last one to increase score due to tech (AH is an expensive first tech) and
- the ever so religiously devout Matrix is now the proud owner of a christian holy city.

Scouting so far:

And therefore, the techs:

https://i.imgur.com/g6xCZyy.png

First the immediate resources then whips and chops. We'll see if there's anything to do with the surrounding terrain ... so far it looks as though I may need to go off-shore to the NW.

2 fishes, only one of which I can reasonably reach.

https://i.imgur.com/4w6IxVt.png

This dot or 1 below. Probably 1 below, best get food first, and an extra flood plain, then whip a monument.

Then further down, the black dot for the black sheep: 2 good 5F tiles, 2 good hills, more bad hills and tundra.

Will be a serviceable military port.

Many of them are cramped together while I'm on an isolated island.

https://i.imgur.com/B0Bo3Y7.png

Horses are in, off to the east coast with sheep. Both of my pigs are online and clams will be up right on cue for size 3. Between that, the isolation and tons of chops, I should be able to set up a nice runaway empire with a minimal archer contingent. There's 5 solid cities as is, maybe 6-7 if copper or iron demands it. However, Immortals will be all but useless. We'll also need early galleys for the circumnav bonus.

I need to brush up on coastal wonders and trade route commerce. Looks like it'll be my economic base.

Beorn

The cat's out of the bag: I got to slavery first.

https://i.imgur.com/034JQVr.png

4 food resources weren't enough though. With copper right in the fat 12, I'll be able to build a massive army of axemen FAST to kill ALL THE WOLVES.

Whipping from settlers is key, as I've got a 50% production advantage on them. Secondary sites will have to spam workers and cottages.

Starting from isolation and without tech trading, REX into a cottage and trade route economy has a lot of potential. No need to mass forces yet. Or to claim territory. Stonehenge is thus a bust. Gotta shoot for a fast economic expansion to every workable tile, with GLH/Col support.

First contact!

https://i.imgur.com/ZBgrsvm.png

Unemployed fishermen from Québec have met with foreign scouts and requested to see their women. Being poor and without work prospect, they bet everything on cultivating a foreign aura of mystery.

Maarten of the Stralish, scoreboard leader and religious guru, has appeared on the landmass to the NW. That's slightly concerning, in a way. A life of cottage greed without enemies was a treasure to be relished.

On the bright side, there are no luxuries on my landmass so meeting new folks will allow for better trade routes and luxuries. Knowing that they've talked about being all piled up together, there's no doubt in my mind that we'll be able to work out some competitive deals.

Side note: scouts don't count as city garrison for happiness purposes. Cottages and sea exploitation remain on the menu as coin is the only way I can pay them. Thing just got more interesting.

Beorn
30-03-2019, 18:18
Ynnek and I are both whipping. 1 pop for him, 3rd for me. 3rd settler is out.

The landmass to the NW is barren, with desert and mountain peaks. That gives me hope I'll be able to settle on the one copper hill so as to establish a coastal beachhead with both strategic interest as a defensive buffer and little risk it will be envied for its productivity.

On to important news:

The capital city was named EGGnSPAM. While BakedBeans made for a suitable second, the persians will be hard-pressed to keep naming cities like that forever. Thus, I'll be picking from the list of towns in Québec (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_towns_in_Quebec). Québec and Lévis are the 2 first offerings, with Gaspé to come on the south shore and St-Tite far to the east to claim horsies.

From our beginnings as insular, isolated idealism shall rise patriotic nationalism through such naming strategies. Or the english canadians will send troops in to quell our hopes. Coin flip really.

Beorn
04-04-2019, 17:10
Napoleon has a coastal capital which will be good for trade route commerce. Unfortunately, it's bad for exploration.

Misclicked the scout that was protecting my 2nd settler. There's a tiny chance that a wolf or jag would pop out of the bushes and take him. That sort of national tragedy would bum me out but oh well.

Pictures with city #3 soon.

Beorn
12-04-2019, 18:04
The french peninsula:

https://i.imgur.com/3L2QXa4.png

Further north: jungle and a warrior from Matrix.

Killer (France) might be willing to let me settle that copper. We'll see. Either way, it's super low priority for him as he's got copper already connected in city #2 and the terrain around that copper is dreary.

My priority is spamming up cottages and putting together a navy of triremes. Isolation has its perks and I'll bet they can't afford to put up a navy on top of the tug-of-war of land disputes.

Settler #4 is almost on the horse site. The fogbusting scout defended against a barb warrior, which is an unexpected surprise.

I need more workers to start spamming cottages but at the same time, quick and dirty imperialistic+chop+whip settlers will fill my island so fast it's almost worth foregoing workers in many places.

Maarten has upped his espionage game against me. From his score, he went tall. Probably has luxuries. I bet he's going big on spies against me because I'm out of reach of his scouts and he wants to know what he's up against. They'll need open borders and spare ships to even think about scouting me.

Killer is either preoccupied with a closer neighbor, or surrounded by too many people, or both. I'll have demographics on him soon.

Beorn
16-04-2019, 21:18
Turn 61.

Demographics reveal I'm first in crop yield. That's awesome. I may have limited bonus resources and NO luxes, but going wide and planting cottages will keep me in the game. There's plenty of strategic resources. Plenty. With no one to immortal rush.

https://i.imgur.com/biHpGkY.png

All of my resources are now settled and pending exploitation. There are 2 more good spots for cottages inland - with settlers about to be chop+whipped.

The foreign situation is very quiet. No one on the east coast, just untamed jungle.

https://i.imgur.com/q5CopGw.png

Killer has been out of reach and/or unresponsive, although he did accept open borders. Sailing next turn will give me some juicy trade route gold from him. I'll have an axe and a scout in his backyard sooner rather than later.

https://i.imgur.com/MPfDgPQ.png

I hope we can cooperate. He has defensible land that would be a PITA to conquer from a naval transit and his best interest would surely be to keep his sights on the NW neighbors that are running away in score.

In other news:

https://i.imgur.com/Oa0L9St.png?1 Matrix has popped 2 cities, bim bam. He already had a solid start with religion and high-gold luxes, but a deadly free-for-all is brewing.

https://i.imgur.com/L92CEOc.png?1 Killer has founded his 3rd city, somewhere inland. He is headed for that free-for-all and I'm content with letting them at it.

Demographics have me on top of food yield by a wide margin. I can micro myself into #1 for most stats. Stone connected in 3 turns and I've got some sweet chop/whip action to go into settlers that overflow. Said settlers will be all set to go spam cottages inland and steamroll me up the corporate ladder.

Turn 78

There might be some big news ahead. Not jinxing it.

https://i.imgur.com/L92CEOc.png?1 Killer is on a rampage. He sent axes north, cut a deal with his holiness https://i.imgur.com/Oa0L9St.png?1 for 1 freebie coastal city and free passage to the next poor shmuck. Said victim barely played his turns ever and has trouble running the game. Not completely sorry to see him go.

Killer also happens to have elephants. As if we needed that to worry about.

Ynnek is in the center of the land, above Matrix. He might be able to settle on the E coast and trade. I really look forward to massing international trade routes. I may not have luxes but I have peace and quiet, so let's make the most of it.

If all goes according to plan, I should have a big economic steamroll going. With a large enough navy and a couple of defenders in good form, it should be possible to sneak my way up to a surprise comeback victory. Too bad isolation fucked immortals. Still, by IMP settling hard and early, and making the most out of CHA :) I'll pull a few rabbits out of the hat I was dealt.

For now, more workers. And triremes for defense.

Time to get triremes and a gazillion cottages [tubs]

Still #1 for crop yield with a bunch of small-time cities (5-5-3-1-1) which all have monument and granary. Fell to #3 pop though, which I bet has to do with Herr Killer swallowing the AI and one of them having 2-3 much larger cities. Got a solid, wide foundation to build upon, gonna make more workers and show the world that surfers are the coolest [surf]

Shabbaman
07-05-2019, 21:16
A gazillion cottages sounds like overkill.

Beorn
13-05-2019, 18:23
Ok, so ... there's 3 continents. Took my sweet time figuring that one out, didn't I. Gonna need optics faster than expected. On the bright side, no one has sailing and I'm halfway to metal casting so the fleet from Bear Island will be up and uncontested for long enough to support a full builder mode.

https://i.imgur.com/zjUN6mH.png

Libraries are going up, scientists hired, cottages being worked in 4/6 cities. 1 will go mass triremes, 1 will focus on ground troops, the capital has 4 big food resources for GP. 3 are passable lumps of land with a handful of usable grasslands so I'll try for the colossus in order to gain viable sea $.

There has been no word on the diplomatic front for a while now. Seems like they are gnawing at the scraps of the roman AI together. Pope Matrix's army consists of mostly archers AFAIK whereas Killer will most likely end up with too few axes to press on, or too many troopps as well as distance maintenance to slow him down.

https://i.imgur.com/YCDqWNi.png

Matrix got bullied out of a city and there's no doubt in my mind that he's been preparing for the worst. Protective archers and a headstart are a fierce thing. A bruised ego, a convenient target ... I'm content to let this play out. If and when Matrix gains the upper hand, I'll have easy pickings close to home. If and when Killer gains the upper hand, he'll be the easier adversary to contend with economically.

Ynnek remains a wildcard. He has 3 cities to the others' 4, tons of lands to the E and N, locks Matrix in and hasn't been involved in a major conflict. Can't tell what resources he has or what kind of an army he sports. He seems the most interested in cooperating and trading. We'll see how that goes.

There are 3-4 potential spots I could settle on to his E and N, one of which is extremely tempting (gold, cow, horses, coastal plain hill). I don't want to spoil a good relationship though, so I'll have to negociate for it. The double silver spot is nice as well.

Maybe I should send 3 galleys, 2 settlers 2 immos 2 workers, settle both spots and send him silver for free. It'd be forceful but he's taking his sweet time settling so it might just benefit him. Or send an extra settler and gift him a coastal town somewhere, to accelerate our partnership. Either way, those metal luxes + early forges will do wonders to Bear Island.

Beorn
14-05-2019, 15:08
https://i.imgur.com/L92CEOc.png?1 Built the great wall. WTF

The AI in Rome seems to have taken care of business with 4 archers whipped up. That's gonna leave a mark. I once hinted at Killer in diplo that I'd be coveting TGW ... did I taunt him into it? Why would he even consider that garbage. Barbs? Low troop count at home?

Whatever it is, wow, and as far as I can tell his war effort is stalling. Are we on for the dark ages?

EDIT: barb uprisings are a thing and Killer dodged a 5-axe bullet. Guess I spoke out of turn.

Demographics look amazing. Let's hope it holds up to scrutiny when mainlanders finish expanding. I need to make every square of Bear Island count. They're counting hamlets these days.

https://i.imgur.com/RWzZWc4.png

Military pales in comparison to Killer's. OTOH, all I need is triremes to deny him hard, whereas he'll be gunning at convenient (more than mine at any rate) land to conquer. Maybe I'm painting too much of a target on my back with wonders. If it comes down to it I'll just have to swallow my pride and whip triremes.

Best Rival has 65 TOTAL gdp. At 50% sci meter, my research allocation alone is 62 [music]

And now for a COLOR CODED diplomatic briefing [tm].

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Napoleon, genius in the arts of artillery, will soon have proper toys to play with. Not sure how far north he will send them before they get christened on walls. Willing to split the loot if we partner to cleanse the pink guys [headstab]

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png Has taken my stone that it may be blessed and used in constructing walls. Those might give pause ... short pause ... to Purple Dynamite down there. We've received pre-blessed marble to use in glorifying the great and the saint among us. [python]

Greed dictates that I should try the double-whammy Parthenon + GLib on that marble. It's terribly tempting. Will mostly depend on a) Killer building a fleet or not and b) getting Parthenon stolen or not. We'll see.

Turn 105: 2 players have reached trade routesand one passed me in GPT. That means a whooping doubling of GPT since T95 [goggle] Yikes. All other demographics still look favorable.

Everything indicates that I'll soon(ish) run the GLib [book] with representation (double research scientists) in a Heroic Epic capital, sporting surplus food for 10 pop on 4 worked tiles. With Caste System, that's 8 scientists. Nothing's done yet though.

Cap still has some work to do getting there while #2 is cranking out (other) wonders. #3+4 are just making units. #5+6 are on a slow exponential curve for pure pop + cottage growth. The boys are at around 4 cities each and nearly half are upstart villages.

An expansion is being planned towards the top corner of the map in order to score gold, silver and a strong military farm on the active landmass. Come T150, I plan to be ready to defend it and/or be in a position to retaliate against Killer's ele-pult forces.

Now I just realized that Joao is both the leader on the 3rd continent AND the civ with early ocean transport UU. That means I can't just relax my home island defense behind a good Navy. While it's doubtful he'd beeline his UU, and get to caravels before I do, it's equally unlikely that I'll get astronomy before he gets optics. Bottom line, my ass will be vulnerable.

Either way, unless I get roped into something unbecoming, my ideal strat would be to play aloof with the neighbors and just fly off to galleons, frigates, grenadiers and cannons, mount a mass-upgrade surprise party, and meet the 3rd continent Finns where it hurts.

SHENANIGANS!

Taoism has been founded.

https://i.imgur.com/WGMXygp.png

That's right, it's nowhere to be found. It was founded on the same turn as Islam. It is logical to conclude that some of those fanatics on Continent #3 are so low on the scoreboard because they rushed religion, presumably to go AP diplomatic victory.

Now, you need every civ in the game (https://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/strategy/game-mechanics/the-apostolic-palace-guide/) to be a member for that to happen. Contingency plan: obliterate them with either a ridiculous tech lead, a naval interdiction or some good ol' riflemen on galleons.

Demographics are back under control as of T107. There's been some wild fluctuations of GNP for the top seed: I whipped in the capital vs someone who artificially inflated their $ (I bet for a tech or for unit upgrades), probably a financial civ with coastal tiles handy.

Anno Domini.

1AD report for posterity.

The world is still at war, its machinations evolved. But war ... war never changes.

https://i.imgur.com/zVNLQi1.png

Rome is defended by its magnificent 7, archers who will stop at nothing to tell Killer he can stuff it. It's a bold move. Let's see how it plays out for them [doomguy]

https://i.imgur.com/PinM3Tt.png

No thanks. Not even the right foe.

https://i.imgur.com/KVYJWCG.png

My scout being dead, I'll be missing the dark patch of Napoleon-Pope borders. Both have 1 city in there somewhere. The world map didn't change much.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png : I'mma grab Rome and then fuck the other pink. Want in?

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png : We have perfectly good relations with the guy holding half a dozen catapults and twice that many axes right by our capital ... why do you ask?

https://i.imgur.com/ai9i0Vp.png : We need your help surviving the oncoming storm, let's make some deal (and stall for 10 turns without signing).

Ynnek would like troops but I have none. My towns aren't even all garrisoned. I have the advantage of high food and peace, but no lux and nowhere to grow. He has the advantage of having the most space behind him, but competing demands with neighbors that want a piece of it.

In short I offered horses, 50/50 split luxes, settlers and workers for a shared settling of his N coast. Seeing as he needs horses and workers now, couldn't settle up there if he wanted to and would even gain an extra lux by signing the deal, it's an offer he can't refuse.

https://i.imgur.com/Rt6gUeS.png

https://i.imgur.com/MOTZAKi.png

I feel like what he wants is for me to attack Killer - or at least close borders to tank his economy. My international overseas trade routes be juicy, and Killer's about to double up on the fun with currency's +1 trade route/city.

https://i.imgur.com/ICzRYOf.png

For that to happen, he'd have to give up more ... else I might just have to join Killer and take it. Not my first choice at all, but the stalling is becoming tiresome.

Very little happens on Bear Island. That's how we like it. I don't have neighbors to contend with at home and thus:

https://i.imgur.com/lmnPw5c.png

Sweet.

The 2 back cities are up with forges and starting to pump out units.

Lucky #7 wasn't mean to be born but hey, iron and fish, could do worse. Besides, ships need iron not copper for metals, so having a secure source is worth it.

Good news which will take the form of caste system, pacifism and a mellowing of the bustling, industrial life they were accustomed to in the capital.

So if the worst comes to pass on the mainland, we'll be alright.

Well, shit. No city razing. I don't want it, maintenance will be a bitch. I don't see why he'd want it either, it'll be a sickly step-child of a city with my culture cannibalizing its tiles. I threw that ball over to his camp. If he wants it he can have it. For my part, I'll settle on gold and claim cow either way.

Philo has been reached, and with it, pacifism. However! no religion from philosophy. Has someone timed Oracle to perfectly fit the research of CoL, grabbing both it and Philo in one fell swoop ?? Either way, no matter, I've got Matrix's religion to work with.
https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png

At 100%, my science expenditure is over 200 BPT. #2 GDP is 105. After I convert to full SE in the capital, 10 scientists with lib+academy+rep = 105 BPT. Do the math however you like, my economic lead is solid. Now, we'll just have to back it up with units. Gold and Horses are connected, 4 immortals will be sailing North. Barbs beware.

Also, since we're here, I just received a GE [estwing] in the capital who was kind enough to build GLH. Il n'y a rien de trop beau, like they say in Québec. The next GP should be mostly scientists, 2-3 of which will be used to bulb optics and astro, then more for paper-edu-print.

Diplomacy is a powder keg right now.

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png : I'll send you luxes if you stop supplying https://i.imgur.com/ai9i0Vp.png with horses and silver.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png : Sure you can move your chariots through, just make damn sure they clear the blast zone before fireworks go off. It'd be a real shame if they got caught in the crossfire.

https://i.imgur.com/ai9i0Vp.png : Thanks for stone, I got walls now. Care to join the war?

He has catapults, walls and slavery. That means his reinforcements will be much superior ; his troops stand a chance. Not a good one at 2v1 though. Meanwhile, I'm not getting in there before gunpowder and cannons. Due to lightbulb priorities, the scholar caste assures me the benefits of bureaucracy would be minimal and insist that I focus on guilds, gunpowder and steel before Civil Service. It would not be sensible to risk an even fight now and they will have catas/trebs/macemen before I do.

Meanwhile, the Québécois scholar caste is ~5 turns from full force, the military caste has 2 training facilities bursting with fresh ships and troops, and the religious caste is about to make funding them a breeze. Once that is done and the palace moved to the mass-priest city, then I'll go CS for bureaucracy and raise hell with cannons.

My unfinished, half-assed, unoptimized, only-specialists, 0% research rate is 89 BPT. Compared to the opponent average of 88 GPT (total, before maintenance), I have a comfortable lead in tech rate. Between that and great people spawning every 6-7 turns for lightbulbing, I'll be at cannons before https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png and https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png can send an army through my trireme buffer. More pictures soon, when it all starts moving.

105 BPT, 129 GPP. I can run a 0% idle economy like that for a while and bulb Astronomy, Gunpowder, Engineering and Steel on the double.

One of them has reached a GNP of 171, which is half my GNP @100% science rate. In that sense, the game is mine to lose, now. One of them caught up in raw hammers while a) my capital dropped to none and b) Moai is 1 turn from completion. So that, too, is in the pocket.

https://i.imgur.com/mwzR1HB.png

3 caravels are sent to explore the oceans, with 2 explorers aboard.

https://i.imgur.com/prWoVbB.png

Notice another decisive victory by Propain over Portugal. Herwood has fallen from #2 to #8 in a stunning upset after having grabbed CoL+Philo early - which gave him a solid lead on the Finn continent. Perhaps this inflated his score beyond his actual power and painted a target on his back. Does that remind you of anyone?

https://i.imgur.com/tvuUsVd.png

Silver is almost connected but my defenders have yet to arrive on site. It'll be a tense 3 turns while Matrix has a chariot parked on the border and that archer has yet to spawn. Once reinforcements arrive, it'll be better.

https://i.imgur.com/BfkaH1p.png

Should I not have built that archer first instead of a granary? Well sure. But those are expensive colonies to maintain. So: double or nothing.

With silver connecting in the next turn or 2 and a lightbulbing of Astro coming right behind to secure the trade route, I'll take the risk of him capturing everything rather than delay growth and profitability.

Quests have been appearing and I fucked them all up. There was the good old "build 9 libraries" quest, which would have given me a free scientist in the GLib specialist capital. Would've been amazing. Then this turn I got the "build 9 forges" quest, which gives an even better engineer specialist. Also in the capital, which would've been incredible.

In other news, Astronomy was lightbulbed with 2 GSci just now. Then I went and read about the quests, learning that they expire when you reach astro. And I was almost there with libraries, too. Not to mention that the GSci's would've been best used as settled specialists in the long run. Oh well.

https://i.imgur.com/ai9i0Vp.png told me that the war was so bad that he wouldn't even be asking for reinforcements. Killer and Matrix have stacked up together and supposedly have something like 20 units parked at his doorstep. I'll divert a chariot next turn to have a look.

In his trademark fashion, https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png went gun-ho from the start, built 2 core cities that are a sight to behold with very high, sustained military production. Somehow, he didn't invade his first neighbor but rather had Matrix build him a gift city and skipped ahead to Rome's throat. Sure. Then Matrix captured Rome. How is that good for Herr Killer??

In parallel, https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png opened with a religion and massed a bunch of protective archers to hold his own for a while. Then he managed to ride along on the Killer warbeast, grabbed Rome and restrained Killer's expansion to dubious jungle terrain. What could he promise Killer that would stay his blade long enough to get catas and elephants, cities and prosperity to dwarf him?

Are they both hoping to make the other overextend, exhaust himself and crash?

Or are they so afraid of my score that they feel the need to form a permanent alliance?

Anyways, I'll grab banks and mercantilism ASAP for the "no foreign trade routes, +1 free specialist" civic and deny them trade route income - that'll hit them by a good 40-50 gpt altogether, maybe more.

The caravels have found 2 foreign landmasses in the ocean so far. 2 caravels, 1 on each side will push forward for circumnavigation. 2-3 more will take time to investigate landmasses. That should make for good pictures soon.

The firt naval combat is about to take place as a bloodthirsty Victarion Greyjoy eyes a helpless barbie galley.

https://i.imgur.com/HcvKkEp.png

Between 1 and 3 landmasses have been found thus far. A settling party will be dispatched on the double to take advantage of the sugar luxury resource. Sugar will give me +1 health with grocer, meaning +3 health apothecaries. Can't wait.

https://i.imgur.com/DRBrrWu.png

And now for the war reports.

A joint taskforce of 23 units, mainly CR2 catapults and axemen, have lain siege to Babylon.

https://i.imgur.com/brZ8Pe3.png

15 defenders are keeping Babylon in play. A half dozen more will reach it this turn.

https://i.imgur.com/Mc91PR1.png

Time to place your bets. The Québécois military caste has 2.3:1 odds on Killer attacking and winning this turn, whereas our builder caste believes they will wait another turn and miss their chance at 1.8:1 odds. None of the scholar caste are betting, having been too busy perfecting naval means of transporting settlers across the ocean.

https://i.imgur.com/ghgt5gV.png

With a LOT of whipping, Ynnek is on the very edge of holding his own. Most of the offensive force are CR axemen and his bowmen have extra strength against melee units. There's enough spears to hold off the elephants. Meanwhile, Matrix seems to be building up an economy in the hopes of holding his own against my research rate - how else would he have so few troops in there. Killer has tons of guys but his reinforcements have to snake around jungles and mountains.

In the long run, I don't think Ynnek can sustain the push. In the short term, the odds are slightly against him. But for that window between him hopefully surviving Killer's onslaught and Matrix bludgeonning him apart with macemen later, he'll have kept the entire continent in the dark ages. Hats off.

Update: Killer attacked and lost a single catapult. Just friggin 1. That's bullshit-level luck, but at the same time I guess it was a foregone conclusion.

Then Matrix barged in on the 3 remaining injured units (combined HP of about 2.4). That didn't require any luck whatsoever.

Met Mali, or as the finn simply put it: "Tampellan Valtakunta". https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Jeke is on the fast track to a cultural victory. Tech-wise, he has music and drama but nothing military. Not even iron working or metal casting for the malinese UB.

He wants stone to build jewish cathedrals (+50% culture) and Notre-Dame [mischief] plus secrecy about his location. His island is a landmass much larger and richer than mine, with 6+ silk, sugar, marble and I've barely scratched the surface. Nor has he, it's WAY under-developped.

An update while Matrix is trying to fix his server.

During the absolute insanity of the Federer-Djokovic Wimbledon final, I wagered a worker on Djokovic at 11-11 of the 5th match. Matrix took me up on it and owes me a worker.

Bad news on the homefront: Ynnek officially departs. 1 less opponent, sure, but that makes Matrix and Killer grow bigger and bolder.

Worst case scenario: they choose to "re-appropriate" the northern peninsula. I'll have backups for luxes and extra economy by then, but hey, still hurts.

Best case scenario: I keep the peninsula, make fewer cottages, hire more specialists and maintain friendly relationships with my neighbors through to mercantilism. I doubt our peace will survive the day they lose my international trade routes.

At stake are: 2 garbage towns (1 holding the only silvers known to man), 1 passable pasture town w/gold and 1 solid military port.

Yeah once the dam broke, everything collapsed in no time flat. The first bombard/collateral assault by Killer was lucky, hugely successful and only lost 2 catas. The rest is history.

As far as multiplying national wonders go, Oxford in Québec is worth 78 beakers (and rising): very high priority. Not sure where to put Wall St. since it doesn't seem to affect specialists. Might even have to put it in a malinese silk patch.

Mali as a whole is a bit on the low-food side so I thought it would best convert to plantations, windmills and cottages. I may get 1 good production city where my saved GE will rush Versailles (the Forbidden Palace lookalike). Cabane à Sucre has the most food+hammers combo potential, under 12 tons of jungle. Then, maybe Taj?

Banking is in and the economic guerilla warfare rages on. Mercantilism has given me 15 free specialists, meaning 90 science + modifiers. It has also stripped Killer and Maarten of 30-40 gpt each in international trade routes. They now both spend 10-20% on espionage towards me while I chain spy transports to counter-espionage them both.

My golden age is over while Matrix gets his (with Mausollos extra turns). He also just finished both HG and Notre-Dame for 14 extra pop, 1 health and 2 :) everywhere. Damn.

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png was alway going to explode in score with his extra rich land but the oceanic expansion has been fruitful for me. With 9 small island fishing wharfs, I'm about to get 30 more scientists and 2 kick-ass military blacksites, all off the radar.

Meanwhile, his GA GNP is under 300 and my 0% all-specialist science rate is over 300. Add to that a GSci to bulb chemistry and I'll have muskets before they have knights, cannons before they have muskets, and draft riflemen before they have cannons.

1250 AD

Things changed all over. Subtly.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer has been skipping turns, spending income on espionage and building an obsolete navy. My spies have spotted 2 stacks of his old troops, split up and soon to be severely obsolete. If you ask me, I think he realized he needed the whole continent to win but that a war with Pope Matrix would at once be too uncertain, too costly and open him up to conquest. Now he hopes to build enough triremes to cover his galleys ... I guess.

https://i.imgur.com/zUFv3md.png

Chemistry is in so he'll be met with frigates. That's that.

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png TRADE NOTHING!!!!!! [tvs]

https://i.imgur.com/burwm7O.png?1

Matrix has cut all business ties just in time for apothecaries to shore up my health counts. I'll aqueduct my biggest culprit and have enough domestic resources to keep everyone fed and gay.

I thought he was in a golden age before, boy was I wrong. He just had a big boom of conquest + Hanging Gardens free pop. This is the real deal:

https://i.imgur.com/Y20CBt8.png

His production in particular took a stunning turn upwards. Now in an actual GA, his economy rivals my own and his civics finally make sense.

https://i.imgur.com/cvKhm5Z.png

Long-term, all of my cities but 2 are hard-capped to 7-9 pop, and already saturated. Not to mention the slew of 3-4 pop fishing wharfs. His empire has a number of grasslands and rivers that will overgrow me in time - and the next 12 turns to do so with aplomb. He's almost caught up in score, too. I mean, sure, I'm way ahead in tech. That over-inflates my score and kept my expansions alive with fewer, hi-tech units. WERE I NOT ahead in tech, his "builder" score would outstrip mine in a heartbeat. And it will if given half a chance. So I'll have to attack with cannons ASAP.

Hence: I need new lands.

https://i.imgur.com/KaoHwUk.png?1

If he had bothered to read the message or play his last few turns, he'd be upset. Nor can he see what I have in store ...

https://i.imgur.com/KeFB3B9.png

With 3-4 boatloads (mainly trebs) yet to come ahead of D-Day.

https://i.imgur.com/ke2524j.png

After that, it'll be a direct ferry line towards the mining colonies flanking Matrix. No doubt he'll take advantage of the GA to build up trebs of his own. Hopefully, I'll have enough muskets up there by the time he comes to plant his flag.

Beorn
21-08-2019, 14:20
I used to watch Killer's galleys like a hawk so as to know when spies come in, that I may counter-espionage them. Then again, he and Matrix don't need to ferry spies by boat: I have a friggin colony on their turf. So for all I know, they've got people walking all over there. Oh well.

Either way, Killer built up a navy. He didn't move alone against opponents 2/3 his size, he won't move alone against a target twice as big. I'll shore up my defenses in the big military factory. The rest isn't so profitable that I need to keep it.

Mongolia is the first to research Compass. Next up is caravels, I guess? And the guy was worried about ProPain but instead of building up economy (no calendar for spice!!!!!) or troops (no CS, construction or feudalism!!!!!), he goes out at sea?

Mali wants to stay in the game and observe. Taking him as a peace vassal without bloodshed, as he suggested, would be massively unfair to the other players. Besides, I want his capital for Solomon and Sistine.

So far, he has agreed to a "pistols at noon" cowboy scenario: we go all out on his turf at one location. I trade a 3-city isolated colony to him for all of his mainland save the capital then declare war. It's more convenient that way. He gets relocated to a small rock, I get Mali. Sounds good. I might wait a couple extra turns to get cannons and make it a 1-turn affair. And if he wishes to deviate, I'll just go to town with a good ol' genocide.

https://i.imgur.com/d7OWEtw.png Mongols and https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Malinese have bought my maps. That'll help with the upgrading budget. Lots of cannons to buy up.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer is massing a fleet, no doubt hoping to punch through with numbers and create a bit of a mess. He saw the frigates though. It would be a shame if privateers were to ... happen to his fleet.

https://i.imgur.com/kTc9RUN.png

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png Matrix is massing troops right out of line of sight ; assorted troops and 4 soon-to-be-cannons will greet him when he plays his cards.

https://i.imgur.com/CtmTnId.png

War on 3 fronts.

The deal I have with https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Mali will save me a lot of trouble and time. I doubt I would have lost much either way. But he'll gift me his cities, all of them, and I'll gift him the 3-city military blacksite. He sends all of his troops to his capital and we meet there for a single, glorious battle. Cannons against skirmishers [tvs].

I kindof regret it, not because of the deal - it's a great deal for me - but because he skips tons of turns. If it becomes a problem, I'll ask permission to the others and retire him completely. And if he doesn't take the deal this turn because he doesn't bother fucking logging in, then I'll just go for a good ol' genocide. [ninja]

Once I have enough cannons to barge in confidently, barge in I shall.

Speaking of barging in, https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Mali went all wishy-washy and asked to not only be given an island to relocate to, but to not give away anything before fighting at the capital in case he won that war, and to extend it by a good 10 turns to put everything in order. The whole reason I offered a clean 1-site war was to save turns. That's a no-go. So barge in uninvited and knock on the door with cannons, I shall.

https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Mali's first city (1 axe 2 LBows) shaved 1.3 HP off a cannon and that's it. No injuries, no casualty, not even going to slow me down one bit. 7 clean victories. Nearly a great general.

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png Matrix has met the mongols (https://i.imgur.com/ex8khnL.png ProPain's neighbor) to the west and is still slowly stacking up troops just outside line of sight to the east. Both he and Killer have spent espionage points counter-espionaging me, which is great - less of them to steal techs with. I'm 2 turns away from a direct ship-chain that will allow 3 units per turn to teleport straight from Lévis to Labrador. This should tip the balance of power in favor of my mining colony.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer's active galleys are off to Davy Jones' locker. I spotted a hefty army hidden nearby but it won't be able to make the trip. Once I have enough cannons to hold Maarten, I'll send 3 privateers up the bay of HQ. No more seafood, no more navy. That should trigger the war, send him on a long trek north and give me time to juggle some elephants around.

Massive hit by Killer's spies, in retaliation to the privateers:

https://i.imgur.com/psQoGyr.png

... or was it Matrix's spies? I didn't keep count of their espionage points. My research sank nearly 300 BPT to 200. Matrix is 11 turns from astro, so his research clocks in at around 200 BPT also.

Lévis is about to get a great specialist, probably a prophet but maybe an engineer. The plan was Versailles but if I can rush Taj Mahal, get the GA and switch civics for free, I'll only have lost 5 turns of double-scientists. That's still 1500 beakers, the price of a late medieval tech. Can't let it taunt me into attacking though.

Eyes on the malinese capital: 4 longbows and assorted garbage.

It'll take 2 extra turns but all trebs will be upped to cannons. That way we go from pretty sure to a guaranteed landslide victory.

5 free muskets. Galleons are en route to ferry the army out of Mali in a few turns.
https://i.imgur.com/TYzyPAS.png Jeke played, this past turn, to my surprise. He got lucky and took down a galleon with a trireme and a galley. Mali will only last a handful of turns so it might have been his last hurrah.

On the more exciting side of the world, we are at war with His Imperial Holiness https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png Matrix.

9 cannons were necessary to bombard Feariburg to 0% defense, after which 1 cannon (32% odds) and 1 musket (96%+) died killing its defenders. One Landsknecht was left alive at 1HP to tell the horrific tales of the first Stralish defeat in history. The plan really is to fight his (poorly hidden) stack with many, many cannons ready to go, so I sit in the fort for now and hope he either fills the city with elephants or attacks the fort. Either way, that's a story for tomorrow.

https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer has musketeers but declined the invitation to a threesome, or the challenge posed by privateers.
https://i.imgur.com/ex8khnL.png Japan has CS but not MCasting+Machinery for samurai yet.
https://i.imgur.com/d7OWEtw.png Mongols have calendar so I offered a trade for spices.

More to come when we meet the Combat-IV elephants in the room.

** Breaking News **

Maarten attacked. Hard. With his entire stack. He took fights from 8% to 60% on the fort and bravely gave everything he had. Here's the aftermath:

https://i.imgur.com/fNljYzk.png

I still have 18 defenders + healer, he has 11 (down from 28 IIRC). Most at half health or less on both sides and only 1 full-health Xbow on defense. Next turn I'll use up a promotion on everything that makes sense and retaliate. I only have 9 units that can attack to begin with so he'll stay alive, but a fresh duo of LBow + musket will keep me safe ... ish.

The embargo hasn't completely got to Propain yet. I generously offered https://i.imgur.com/ex8khnL.png to take all his extra resources so I didn't land on him next.

The Malinese Expeditionary Force is just about done and ready for a new contract. I have half a mind to just dump it all on PP since he's ~5 turns away including the capture of Mali's last hold. I could also do a 2-shipments run by way of the oceanic islands, which would give me the flexibility to act anywhere in ~15 turns.

https://i.imgur.com/mUPlUXM.png

My first thought was to outflank Matrix with the MEF in Rome while I kept him occupied reinforcing the East, but he suicided his army. PP is the most convenient target, Mongolia is the most lucrative with a size 15 city begging for a forbidden palace and spices+corn on the N coast ready to be seized. I'm still on the fence.

Unless I suicide either one of my stacks, this game is now all but won. I just need to mop up 2/3 of the land area.

So that he may keep waging war on me. He'll need it but it will be short-lived. His main force has been eliminated almost to the last elephant.

https://i.imgur.com/dvGlSWk.png

The scientific advancements of the world:

https://i.imgur.com/qZIGnCP.png

Things to notice from the tech screen:

Matrix went Paper, then Navigation, and just got done. He has 1 galley in Har which I am ready to take out with a frigate.
ProPain recently researched Feudalism, still 2 techs from samurai.
Killer has gunpowder and musketeers. My muskets have pinch (+25% vs gunpowder) from a quest so that's all good.
Sami Khan hasn't researched anything in a while, his last 2 being CoL and optics. Betting he went Astro.

What the world leaders are up to:

What the castes are doing for YOU:

The scientist caste got us to cannons first. We are in position to switch into Theocracy and Feudalism for +4 XP, just waiting on a Taj Mahal GA.

The jewish Holy City will get back up in 2 turns, and Versailles in 3, which will ensure funding for generations of researchers to come. It will also come 2 turns faster than Matrix's Versailles, allowing me to steal his treasury for fail gold when that happens.

https://i.imgur.com/HrVVyVK.png

The religious caste built us colonies all over the oceans which are now all saturated with as many people as we dare stuff. Health concerns will be resolved shortly.

The military caste's successes have launched us into the final, "World War Beorn" phase of the game. The once mighty Stralish are down to the bone. With most of the non-essential French military personel waving Stralish flags, I'm over 2x their respective strengths. Even if they combined their entire forces together in 1 spot, I'm confident I could cannon them down to a pulp.

https://i.imgur.com/vyVxmBM.png

Heroic Epic comes online in 2 turns @Labrador, meaning I'll reinforce by 1 musket or cannon every 1.5 turns. The game wasn't completely done for before the war, but Matrix sending his army on a musket fort sealed the deal.

The Matrix, reloaded.

https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png His Imperial Holiness has been able to refurbish his army with the lot of https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer's obsolete catapults and shiny new musketeers. I have stayed at war with Matrix while Killer declined to join, opting instead to collaborate in the strongest possible terms to a sort of ... French Resistance.

https://i.imgur.com/eQhwTaU.png

Beca had been bombarded to 0, its units collateral'd to 20-40% HP. Lacking the manpower to swipe it in 1 turn, I was basically farming XP on it. The woods 3 + medic 3 duo of great generals means I can keep at it for a LONG time, with Killer's roads to bring reinforcements in.

Still, when he ran short on troops, Matrix took to the back door and Killer made it his own. Bummer. On the bright side, it means I get more roads to reinforce faster - which I am fully taking advantage of.

The siege of Goon should be quite expeditive. Whether Matrix pulls a city trade again or not, his capital is next down the line.

Oh, and Rifling in 2 [rifle]

Beorn
23-09-2019, 00:35
First, the bad news: on a very tired late night I got cocky, overextended and upgraded the wrong unit to rifleman in Beca. Lost it along with a lot of my army. HUGE losses in my unit count.

That being said, I reinforce faster and with stronger units than https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png His Imperial Holiness Matrix. Killer has been gifting most of his fresh military production as gifts too ... I may not be reinforcing faster than BOTH of them though [guns]

So as Karl Marx used to say: "Seize the means of production!" [luke]

And the plotting began. [tank]

Killer would receive a full landing of the Malinese army.

Ynnek and Akkad are greatly undermanned:

https://i.imgur.com/z9F5uxx.png

The frontline on the turn I realized I fucked everything up and lost my army in a stupid Napoleon-in-Russia replay:

https://i.imgur.com/3JgB62Q.png

Dur-Kuri only had a spear and could be grabbed by amphibious macemen

https://i.imgur.com/jOuAIFL.png

The front door has several musketeer, nothing I can't handle

https://i.imgur.com/FA6eyaO.png

And it seems both might be working towards cannons, or maybe grenadiers

https://i.imgur.com/yASNQFh.png

[charge] So, Herr https://i.imgur.com/pPPx2tq.png Killer, we are at war. [charge]

https://i.imgur.com/XwyHHv2.png
https://i.imgur.com/xBRmCL2.png

2 for 2, barely a scratch. Odds were really bad for capturing his capital amphibiously (not all boats could reach) so everyone gathered at the same woods LZ

https://i.imgur.com/ZEAmPh4.png

His muskets have speed, mine have pinch. I like my chances. The very first cannon shot, without bombardment, would go at 47% odds and the CR2 rifleman is just a big cheater.

Dur-Kuri and Beca were reinforced just in time: they'll have to take turns.

https://i.imgur.com/RqId2LX.png

So last turn was disastrous and I lost the remaining of my first Holy Roman Taskforce. This turn I took Goon back, for keeps ; claimed 2 of Killer's gold-rich expansions, stole his best seaport and positioned myself to strike at the heart of his empire with a fresh, complete army of units that out-tech his. Last but not least: 4 turns to go before cavalry.

Their move.

Beorn
24-09-2019, 01:21
Dur-Kuri was worth it: granary forge courthouse is a nice bonus

https://i.imgur.com/TRsooEI.png

I'll regroup those forces, upgrade a lot of rifles and some cavalry, then march on Strastad.

https://i.imgur.com/mYDnQ2t.png

The northernmost towns are defended surprisingly well, with 2-3 longbows and muskets in Leniken alone. Not to be underestimated, I'll wait for a sizeable 3rd army of cavalry to engage it.

On the other side, Killer has been gifting musketeers to Maarten en masse. That leaves his home excessively vulnerable. Boot Camp had most of his army in 2 stacks: 1 defending, 1 standing by 1T east. A handful of musketeers (plus assorted bronze age units) have disappeared while only a single 1-HP catapult remains. No losses on my end.

https://i.imgur.com/ZUYOD0C.png

Next turn, we begin a pretty agressive march through Killer's virtually undefended interior.

https://i.imgur.com/7re87UT.png

His capital is defended by more bronze-age units. in the next 2 turns, I'll be reinforcing the marching stack with 6 assorted cavalry, cannons, pikemen and riflemen. Should be mine in 3 turns or so.

Meanwhile, His Imperial Holiness https://i.imgur.com/THiEHW7.png Matrix has gathered a sizeable force with catapults he can upgrade to cannons next turn. I'll meet him with as many troops, better armed, and an extra pack of cavalry next turn.

https://i.imgur.com/7Xw5YLu.png

Taj Mahal's GA is on while we clear the unrest in the northern towns. Between them and Mali becoming more productive, the future looks good.

https://i.imgur.com/OQWtZiy.png

Most of my production has turned to pikemen because I can make them cheap, promote to CR3 (or Woods3 for heals), and upgrade them to rifles on the field. They have done the spy coup into Hereditary Rule again but with much less effect: I had already switched to war civics. Plus, this being a GA, I'll just flip back in 3 turns no questions asked. Yeah cannons from Matrix earlier would've made this a whole different war. I doubt I could have won it - or defended the gold coast colony for that matter. His economic rise would've matched mine, so I'd have been forced to conquer Japan/Mongolia to stay ahead. Without them having cannons I was able to botch 2 invasions, lose 2 whole armies overextending on each side of the continent, and still keep pushing both.

https://i.imgur.com/NPpkgo0.png

That's with me on war civics and him without 2 of his core cities (so both lower GNP). Still, neck-and-neck. I'd have reached factories+Sid Sushi+Infantry much faster but cannons and grenadiers would've held the continent for a while. Tanks would've done it.

Right now he is 1 turn away from steel. Next: I'll move on Strastadt, then he'll upgrade, turn. Next I'll attack, then cannons can counter-attack, turn. It'll be an interesting few days.

Game over.

Looking back, I made good big-picture strategic decisions, pretty ok micromanagement and shitty tactical manoeuvers.

Points against:

Isolated small island, 40% of which was desert and tundra, without counting mountains (got a volcano eruption that killed 2 towns)
No domestic luxury resources
Expansion opportunities were 1-tile islands, desert behind Killer, jungle in front of Killer, or halfway up the map
Picked an ally I couldn't properly help in ynnek
Wasted 2 entire armies (each large enough to win the game) getting cocky and pushing too hard without reinforcements or waiting for upgrades

Points for:

Large amounts of food in the capital for expansion and [whipped]
Isolated from the early rampaging of CR axes and catapults
International trade routes from GLH alone yielded more income than the average GDP for a long while until mercantilism
Lots of forests to get pyramids up, and nothing else to do anyways
Immense amounts of time on my hands - some days I needed almost an hour just micromanaging cities, workers, transport routes, etc. I may have all my head but, especially last spring, it moved very slowly

As for the other starting positions:

Japan had the best but was completely crammed behind Portugal. Still, imo, the best one
Portugal 2nd best, could've rushed bronze, denied metal to the Japs, taken over japan early and conquered his continent. In hindsight with full knowledge of resources, would be my choice
America and Mongolia had large potential as well but I doubt they could've withstood a unified western continent. Mongolia was a 1st timer and deserves enormous congratulations for keeping up with us
Rome was awkwardly situated geopolitically, and not rich enough in resources to make up for it
Mali was rich in gold but poor in food, and most of all, too isolated for my taste
Killer had a solid base of 2 cities (could've been 3-4) for a massive axe-cata surge, as he is wont to do. The right spot for the right guy. However, he made cottages too late to keep up, slowed further by a dense jungle of grasslands, and conquered too few high-commerce tiles/cities to make up for it
Maarten and ynnek almost had twin starting positions, rich in FP cottage gold potential, luxuries, the works. Maarten had it better but ynnek had more room to breathe behind him. The most tense, high-risk high-reward positions.

Strategically I was best off building my super science city. Playing it safe early on (with extra early triremes) won the game. Still I wonder what might have been if I'd chosen to immortal-rush Killer from behind with his army up in Rome. The game would've been violently more interesting. Besides, I wish I could've helped ynnek more.

Matrix often said that it was an interesting stroke of luck that the veterans got clumped together and all the fun finns on the other side. Any one of us starting in Mongolia might've just crushed everyone. As would have either Matrix or Killer if they'd had the guile to take on the other after ynnek fell.

All in all, a very fun game.

My entire game plan was to peacefully leapfrog over you and your lack of aggressivity helped. As was said in Matrix' thread, if you had been more keen on kicking me out, the stack I held the north with would've been all over Mongolia instead. A slower, but much more reliable way to win.

As for the mining colony NE: gold town was a solid balanced town with good cottages, silver and barb towns were shit, but Labrador ended up being my Heroic Epic city: with 4 windmills and 4 full-bonus workshops, it produced 80-100 [estwing] which is almost a cavalry per turn, rolling out with 3 promotions (9XP charismatic).

During golden ages, production in Lévis was often over 100 making wonders, Labrador would overflow near 200 and Québec has no rep bonus on specialists on this screenshot. With it, you're looking at just shy of 300 BPT in that city alone (0% science), with the world #2 economy at 1000 total.

Thanks for the full spoiler thread. :) A good game it was indeed!

Killer and I were too late by the time we were done killing socralynnek. Perhaps we should've gone for you instead. The only problem with that was that I only had two coastal cities, which were on the wrong side of the continent. Your science city was so ridiculously powerful, that you ran through the tech tree with seven-league boots.

That's a trick I definitely need to remember. Plus that if I see someone with such a economic superiority, it means forces need to be directed to that player. Because once that advantage really kicks in, it's a lost cause for the rest of the game.

Well played, Beorn! :) Onto the next one...

The bit just before triremes felt a bit tense. Once I had those the game was mine to lose.

Pangea next time? And city razing on, if only for barbs?

Congratulations! Well played, well deserved.

You made the best out of your starting position, I did not...

To be fair, it was slightly worse of a position than Maarten's. Not enough to make a huge difference 1 on 1, but it was never 1 on 1 ...
