Well, this came somewhat as a surprise: GalCiv3 just got announced. GalCiv2 has the best AI I've seen in a 3X-game, and the diplo was superb... compared to the Civ franchise. The major downside: it didn't have multiplayer. But surprise surprise, GalCiv3 will have multiplayer!

I could insert a fancy trailer with what appears to be cutscenes, but who cares as long as it's not actual gameplay. So take a look at the website if you're interested in fancy graphics.

Oh, and you can buy alpha access for a measily $100. You get to name a star though, so if you all chip in I'll name it CivDuelZone (otherwise I'll default to "Brown Hole").

Well for those who didn't notice: it's available as an early access game in Steam now. For €93 you can play now and get all future updates for free. I'll wait for the final release, I think the price is a little steep for alpha testing their product :)

I saw this with interest then went  at the £75 price tag to alpha test it. Quite a marketing strategy to get your fans to pay to test their game for them.

Seems to happen quite a bit though lately. Planetary Annihilation adopted the same strategy when they put their early access game on sale for € 50. Their reasoning was that all their Kickstarter backers paid that much so any other price tag would be unfair to them. Although I can follow their reasoning I still feel it's extremely weird that I have to pay more for an alpha release than what you have planned to charge for your finished product. I think the Minecraft model where you paid less when in alpha and costs increased when the product was nearing release was much better. But I can't blame dev's for trying this, if people are willing to pay more for this type of early access then why not oblige them :)

There's always someone prepared to pay for bragging rights.

It's on a 50% discount now, although the game is still in beta. Although it's close to my 75% discount autobuy criterium, I stay away from this out of principle. Why is this game being sold when it's clearly not finished? Does this huge price drop mean there aren't enough backers to turn this into a brilliant game?

Reviews at this point are mixed as well. My main reason for waiting is that the GalCiv II:UE I bought turned out to need a Stardock account to play. Very annoying.

That's not the end of the world, is it?

A blast from the past: this game is free this week in the Epic Games Store!
