I had a good starting locaion with a cow and a wheat after border
expansion, but was harrased by barbs the entire game. I lost a
lot of warriors and had to change plans for workers and settlers.

The AI's are constantly 6 techs ahead. Meanwhile it seems no AI
wars have occurred yet. But I have been threathened by the
Persians a few turns ago. I expect a war pretty soon now, between
the AI's.

Turn 112:

The last 111 turns I expanded ASAP and outraced the Persian
archer-settler combo's two times, quickly build some temples
and barracks and build my horses and upgraded some warriors
and chariots.

After anarres and me reached a discussion about no MA's
against the other humans I declared war on the Persians
and MA'd the Viking. This netted me 3 techs for only 4gpt
as they already were at war with the Persians.

Turn 115:

I razed 3 cities in 3 turns, The 4th turn was for resting.
So far the war is going well. I lost only one horse and one
spear. Unfortunally the Russians signed peace. But the Greek
joined the war in an alliance with the Vikings. They (V) will
stay in the war for a while I suppose.

In turn 114 the Persians created the GL. I hope to get it before
the Vikings do. Normally they go for the smaller cities first
so my chances are quite good. My healty troops are in the western
sea-jungle area. My horses are resting in my NW city.

The Babs and Russians are at war with Arabia (anarres). Anarres
has just paid the iroquois against the Babs as a buffer. This
means no offensive move from anarres on the Iroquois. He will
probably go for the Greeks then. After all it is conquering time
now... The Greek lands suck... (lots of jungles [cool] )

Also I still dont understand where anarres is : what colour is he please ?

You say he is between Iro and Greece so is he Red ?
No that must be the Babs...Are the Iros purple and Greece light green ?

OK now by looking extremely closely I can see one little Pink city south of Greece : anarres is INDEED in the black hole isn't he ?

- anarres = Arabs
- Deity Level (straight Deity)
- Pangea/Standard map
- 5 billion/Temperate/70% water
- No raging or sedentary barbs
- AI civs: random

Turn 118:

I am rolling over the Persians like they are not there!
They were at war with the Russians and Vikings when I stepped
in, so their troops were in the North and East. I attacked
from the south with an horseman rush. The war in now 6 turns
old and I have captured 2 cities and razed 3 of them. I also
pillaged in the 4th turn their iron. I only met and killed 1
pike.

My next target, Persepolis, will probably have 3 or 4 pikes in
it. I plan to attack it with 10 horses and 6 swords. That will
be enough I hope...

The war is going etremely well so far: in 6 turns only 2 horses,
1 sword and 1 spear lost. I also got 4 elite units but no leader
yet.

I think anarres got war with Russia after a blackmail denial. They
drew in the Babylonians forcing him to pay the Iroquois. Then the
Babylonians paid the Vikings...

We may call this a blackmail-denial-boomerang...

All in all this game goes very well for me and I have a lot of
luck with the Persians.

ermmm.. I am reseaching Philosofy, I am like 10 techs behind... According to anarres,
who is some 3 or 4 techs (I think) ahead of me the AI's are researching very fast, even
for a Deity game. They are building Leonardo's atm...

No problemo, as I will go for Persepolis in 4 turns which has the GL... [evil]

I am thinking that if I will get Astronmy AND Chivalry from the GL, I will go
for an mass upgrade and gamble on 4 Caravels with 12 Samurai and go for a
swift visit in Arabia... But I am not sure yet. The entire game I have been
"strong" compared to anarres while he has twice as much culture...

"Strong" according to F3 or according to the Powergraph ?

Watch out that F3 does not give you a true picture of your Military position against HIM !
It only gives you a position vs an average of all your opponents [groucho]

More war turns.

Turn 119
A bad RNG turn. Lost 2 horses (1 elite) and 2 swords and
wounded more horses on a reg spear and a vet pike.

Turn 122
Kill one spear, another vet pike appears. Seems the Persians
are still able to build them. Greece and Arabia are at war
as expected.

Turn 123
I invade Persian territory near Persepolis with 8 horses,
6 swords, 3 spears and a catapult. Scandinavia and Persia
have peace. I draw them back in for 12 gpt.

Turn 124
Killed 2 immortals that stalled the movement to Persepolis.
Lose a turn by it. Another immortal spotted. Two longbows
and a galley threaten the southern front :( All because
those damn Vikings had 1 turn of peace with the Persians!!!
They immediately move all their offensive units to me.
Russian threat, we give in, they turn polite. Anarres takes
another Greek city, he is going straight for Athens.

Turn 125
Seems I lost 3 spears and 1 wounded in the Persian turn.
I check Persepolis with a horse and see a vet pike. I
decide to pull back. I kill 3 longbows and 1 immortal and
get a leader who Immediately rushes the FP. I will attack
again when I get new spears to protect the swords. Meanwhile
I hope the Vikings keep the Persians busy for a while.

Nothing happens, resting and retreating.

turn 127
Killed the pike in the middle of my territory. Also killed an
archer that landed from the SW galley. In the Persian turn they
wounded two of my spears. The next turn I will move in again,
this time with 20+ units. Anarres set up the Vikings against the
Greek which is annoying but for sure will cost him a lot.

turn 128
No Persain activity spotted apart from a galley in the NW.
I sent the troops back in Persian territory. This time it
are 8 swords, 9 horses, 5 spears and a catapult. After them
follow 4 horses, 1 spear and 1 sword. The Vikings have captured
a Persian city last AI turn.

Troops now near Persepolis. Kill a longbow that came one step short.
The advance into Greek territoty by anarres has halted now for a some
turns. Maybe he has met some Russian troops by now?

The attack succeeds. Horses weaken the defense and swords finish
the job. We kill 3 reg and 2 vet pikes and a spear. Another reg
longbow, that stands nearby, is killed too. We only lose 2 swords
and 2 horses. The Great Library is ours. In hindsight my retreat
and reinforcement was wise as they had 5(!) pikes and a spear. I
was suspecting this as the AI always has so much units in a size 12 capital (+wonder city).

Now, I have enough untis to takes the two southern Persian
cities. I feel very much for abandomning Persepolis once I get my
techs as a flip will probably occur (I can use those units then
to take the remaning cities). Shall I do this or keep the city and
use the units for garrison?

Also, what shall I do with the leader. I will be able to get
Leonardos but maybe Bach is around too??? I think Bach is very
important on Deity level...

ERIKK, Bach is certainly a great wonder. It'll save you a lot of money. How much would you save in the upgrade with Leo?

Dunno, I think there are not that much techs around as the AI's are only
building Leo's. I think that after the Persians are dead I will switch to
Republic and go into builders mode. Leo's will be usefull as upgrading to
Samurai is very expensive, so that together with the availablity with the
techs makes me decide to go for Leo's ASAP: war is continueing and I still
have a lot of elites [groucho] I also have 4 lux in my territory and cheaper
cultural/happiness buildings.

I will keep Perspolis I think. I will move out the units once order is restored
and keep a pack near for retaking if it flips. I think I will need the GL longer
than I initially thought...

I'd go for Leo as well...80g per upgrade is a hell of a lot, if you have no treasury go for Leo, if you have 800g/1K go for Bachs...

Decided to move troops towards southern Persian city, I have lots of elites and hope
to get another Leader. I also decided to rush Leo's as the GL only gave these techs:
Currency, The Republic, Monarchy, Feudalism, Monotheism, Engineering,
Invention, Gunpowder
it also said Chivalry but I recieved Construction instead (when checking)... Seems this
was a bug...

The Russians already have Chemistry. All others are equal or a bit behind in tech.
It seems all AI have researched the lower part. Anarres is 5 tech behind on me. He
has quite a big empire (I have the WM now).

I will switch to Republic as soon as the resistance in Persepolis has ended. Any
assault on anarres is out of the question. I will wait using any Samurai too,
first my cities have to grow a bit bigger!

Take Persian city, no loses, kill 2 spears, 1 longbow and
capture a catapult. No leader
Trade techs with Vikings and Greeks: getting approx 30gpt and
a lump sum
Embassy in Babylon, they stay annoyed...
Get ROP's with all AI's, paying the Russians for it. I need to get
them more friendly to us...In turn 132 Babs and Iro's had peace, dunno if anarres set them up
again in 133. If not, then anarres will have a 2nd front...

Yeah, the Russians cant reach anarres while he is at war with them
for over 20 turns now. I think that is the reason why he did not
take Athens yet. Also Babylon and Russia (the two big powers) cant
reach each other over land.

There is a separation in this game: I have to deal with Russia and
Vikings (and Persia) while anarres has Iroquois, Babylon and Greece.

If it gets that far, the choke point will be a real one!

Monarchy, Gunpowder and Chemistry compared to me.

Upgrades, troop movement to southeastern Persian city. Kill a 1 hp
(?) lone longbow with my elite spear. I do not miss any units...

turn 136
Got Theology and Chivalry from GL. I am almost sure I got
them from Greece (?). Razed a Persian city, only one more
to go. Get two more slaves. Lost one horse, killed two pikes.
Upgrade more troops.

turn 137
More upgrades again (running 100 gpt some time now). Settler
will place a new city in the southeast. Got a ROP with Iroquois.
Have all ROP's except anarres and Persia. Preparing for the final
attack and will use Samurai to trigger GA!

Turn 137 - current status:

upgrading
I am halfway upgrading all my units. Now that I am
a Republic I am moving most of the units north to
the Russian and Viking borders after upgrading. All
the money that I spare each turn (due to the GL) I
have put in to either rushing barracks and temples in
outer ring cities or upgrading spears to pikes/muskets
and warriors/swords to med inf's. I also have three
Samurai now. I calculated that I will need 600 more gold
for complete upgrades. [eek]

GA
I am planning to get my GA in the last assault on the
final Persian city. Then I will have peace for a while
finishing marketplaces and libraries. If I get lucky I
might get another Leader for Bachs.

nearby AI's
Anyway, my army will be fully upgraded and ready to
withstand any Viking (Beserks) or Russian (Cossacks)
attack. The Vikings are gracious and the Russians
polite at the moment, thank god! I have ROP with all
AI's (except Persia of course) I am planning to be
THE luxury supplier for Russia and become great
buddy's with them too! [scared]

happiness
When I take that last Persian city I will also have a
5th luxury! No need for Colloseums yet. My core cities
are all in the range size 3 to 7 and have temples.

anarres
He is screwing around with the AI's as usual. He is
at war with Greece, Russia and Vikings at the moment.
He bought peace with Babylon after the Iroquois signed
peace too (so he had no choice). His assault on Greece
is going slow as they now have muskets (Gunpower from me)
and Chivalry. He also complained about the RNG. [satan]

sum up short term future plans:
Have all troops upgraded, be ready for an attack
Get GA and build improvements in that period
Have peace for a while
Prevent Russia and Vikings from attacking me
sum up long term future plans:
See what anarres does, if he goes for taking over
the entire eastern part of the world, I will either
attack him or take over Russia (and Vikings after Russia)
If anarres stays getting nowhere (as it looks right
now) I might go for an attack on Russia with the
Vikings as allies...
Anyway, I think anarres will get out of trouble as
soon as his knights are there and that the choke points
will become THE important spots on this map! :)
This game is becoming one of the most fun PBEM game I have ever
played so far. I am doing fine and know anarres will do fine too
(like in our second game). So, this time I wont let him get to
domination!

You seem to be doing very well in this game.

I noticed that your capitol is at a crappy position in the second picture. Have you thought about rushing or jumping to a new one?

Hi Eldakker,

It is not a very good location but not that bad IMO. I have the
Palace and Forbidden Palace nicely spread out along the cities
atm. But if in the future game I take over Russia for instance,
than I will definitely do a Palace jump (rush with a leader).

Yes you are right. I was reading about the rings of cities on cfc and how they minimize corruption. And I noticed your rings around your palace are not so very good imho. So that's why i thought it's crappy but like you say it is ok for now. :D

We get Education from the GL :( Bye bye GL effect! Meanwhile
anarres was able to trade techs with the civs he isnt at war with
and only lacks Education (and Monarchy) now. So I am only one tech
ahead on him. Set research on 10%, one or two turns of upgrading of
a couple of vet horses and some vet spears needed. We leave the
pikes pikes (no money going there anymore). Settle new city in the
southeast.

turn 141
We disband some reg spears. We capture the last Persian city without
getting a leader. The 5th luxury is in the pocket! We trade Education
to the Barbs for a lump sum and some gpt. They are polite now but the
Vikings turned Cautious (from Gracious). We are in our GA now! :)

Movement through Viking territory is terrible: the are standing in
the way, I have to move through jungles etc.. In anarres' turn 146 he
declares he sees me: he just took the western Greek city that turn...
(...if only I was there 1 or 2 turns earlier (which was possible)...)

anarres took the crucial hill with only one pike. War will be just
a matter of time! In the in turn diplomacy he seems pretty confifend
at first but later not any more.

him yet... I have a dilemma now: should I go for Athens and try to
raze the Lighthouse and face heavy resistance or should I go Delphi
and destroy his city and some of his units? Also I need to keep one
unit on that hill to prevent being unable to return to base...

It's part of the game, but I hate seeing such a lucky break. Now luck decides over a very important battle.

No, I have to retreat, I have only 2 Samurai and 10 med infs. I will upgrade all pikes now.
Anyway he can sail to my shores. He does not have any ROP's with the AI's. So I only have to
watch the shores. I will relocate my troops. I do not have enough troops to face the Russians
or Vikings anymore. But I do not fear them now that I have been attacked by anarres.

But it does suck yes... Anarres has a free hand now in Iroquois-land. His capital is next to a
bunch of Iroquois cities. To fully profit from the capital he must take those cities. I think he
will go for them now. Ally with the Babs and squeeze them in 3 or 4 turns...

The good thing is that anrres did not get any leader so far (he says) and that he had to abandom
two cities because of me. He also rushed units and (at least 2) improvements.

anarres was lucky in 151 but unlucky in 152!

Well I think it does. It looks like he is not gonna fuck up his
reputation retaking it and break the peace deal...

Anyway, my messing around at his borders gives him instead of 6 lux
3 lux now:
- no 2 gems because he had to abandom that city (Sparta)
- a city with lux (3 dyes) flips because the Greeks are still alive (and
his untis were needed in Athens I guess(?))
- the last Greek city he was unable to take has 2 furs (because he had
to run to save his Ansars, the abandomning of Delphi and disappearence
of the Ansars that took Delphi supports this theory)
- there are an iron and a saltpeter source in that area!

In that lucky battle I lost 680 shields and he lost 260. I think the
lack of those lux will cost him more in the long run. He has 2 size
12 and 2 size 10 cities. They probably will have entertainers now,
costing him g/p/t as well as shields p/t. Remember he is in his GA,
thus costing him even more! I hope he lost some units in that flip
too! [satan]

The chance that he sends his Ansars in galleys to me dropped even
lower by this event. Also an attack on the Iroquois is smaller now,
I think... OTOH these units move fast, he can be back in 18 turns to
set up the final destruction of Greece after whiping out the Iroquois.

I am still in my GA and have 93% happiness, a load WLTK days with my
6 lux (one from Vikings) and traditional enemy bonus (from anarres).
All AI's are polite except the Babs for some reason (cautious).

5 turns to Democracy. GA ends in turn 162. In techs we lead with Monarchy,
Banking and Music Theory over anarres. We are still at war but nothing
happens. The AI's have been quiet for some turns now. I think there is a
slight chance on a war with Russia and some AI (Babylon?). Most of the times
such a war in this stage of the game is between #1 and #2 or #3 (that's us)
I just signed a new ROP with Russia and have 2 trade deals with them atm.

Russia researched Metallurgy quite fast but did not research Mil. Trad. after
it??? Instead they researched the upper part and already have Democracy! We
are 2nd in tech after them. Russia has Democracy and Astronomy over us.

Don't ask me how but anarres is every goddamn time capable of buying/trading
techs from/with the AI's... He must have done some excellent deals! I still
wait for his attack on the Iroquios. He loses valuable shields not having the
complete advantage of the corruption ring around his captial..., maybe he is
awaiting AI activity too or waiting for a deal with Iroquois to end. He also
still has that Greek flip-city-problem.

Long time no update:

anarres destroyed the Greeks and and The Iroquois. Meanwhile he manages to outproduce, outresearch and gain more money than me while he rep must be much worse than mine. Also I was a democracy and he a republic...

I must conclude that he:
- he is a better diplomat
- his micromanaging pays off significantly
- his early granaries paid off getting him faster bigger cities and more workers

turn 185:
anarres attacks the Babylons who had an MPP with Russia. He signes a MPP with Russia first and have the Babs make the first move. Now Babylon is at war with Russia. We had a discussion on MPP's after this move from anarres as I did not wanted them at all in the game. We had a 'fight' over MA's before but not on MPP's. We disagreed back then leaving it undecided (IMO). Anyway, there were no alternate rules agreed on MPP's that time so we have MPP's in this game right now.

I cannot attack anarres now as he is backed by Russia, he can sent all his troops to the Babylonians. Once this war is ended for the Russians I will try to isolate anarres with trade embargo's (with Russia and Vikings). That might be my only chance.

anarres only took 2 cities in 8 turns. According to F3 the babs are stronger.
I hope he is having a hard time! [evil]

I have Steam Power now and I am 4 techs ahead of him (including Nationalism) but
am not sure if he has Industrialization yet.

Fucking Rissians declared war on me. I entered anarres' territory with a ship
but that is not enough for triggering the MPP AFAIK... Peace seems impossible
again. I MPP'd the Vikings to avoid a mass cossack attack!

or so for me till tanks. My brave infantry will set up a tenacious
defense!!! The Russians are helping out a bit.

I then bombard Samaria 13 times destroying the temple, taking 2HP from an Infantry and dropping the pop from 4 down to 1.

2 Tank attacks kill the Vet and Conscript Inf defending a stack of about 20 workers!

Send in 2 Cavalry to pillage the coal just north of Samaria.

Abandon Pasargadae and refound on the same spot.

AI: Russia takes my 2 exposed cav with 2 Inf.

I broke through his line near Bizen, so I could reinforce the south-
eastern cities from Bizen which was loaded with troops. The same
goes for the nothern cities which are reinforced by Samaria.
Anarres was able to cut through my defenses with his rader tower-
upgraded tanks...
