Nice.

You want me to make a subforum for this? Then we're sure those people who don't know the proper etiquette of spoilers won't be reading this.

Leader / Civ combinations were random.

I got Shaka of Persia.

Decided to settle 1 N of pigs, settler has already moved there.

I think, and I hope, that this is not necessary. Probably no one will notice that there is a spoiler here as I won't tell anybody...

So it's a custom map then? Looks a nice start.

the move looks like a smart decision

Stupid question... Is this cvi 4 or 5? I haven't played any civ in a looong time.

Tubby, its civ 4

It's a generated map that was only quick-checked for isolated starts.

Yeah, the nice start offsets a little the non optimal traits...

Looks slightly more than that if the hill has been altered for extra food and irrigated. If not you could have a big advantage i guess!

Yes, that hill deosn't look normal

It looks like Civ4 and the start is quite good. IMO, chop the forest and kill some neighbor(s) with Immortals or whatever resource comes by. Then, see what happens.

Very nice start, what type is the map?

socralynnek

Fantasy, so it seems (DaveShack generated some maps and the host picked one randomly)

Lt. Killer M

pity you need bureaucracy to get irrigation to your grains

That might have been my second city site...such a great site...

But then the game was restarted because of very unbalanced starts...

socralynnek

Regentman - Charlemagne of Holy Rome
Caledorn - Frederick of Khmer
Bowsling - Asoka of Ottoman
Daveshack - Augustus Caesar of Greece
Bistitra - Ragnar of Mongolia
Majic - Mehmed II of Zululand
grant2004 - Isabella of Sumer
Aivoturso - Huayna Capac of Dutchlands
Socralynnek - Cyrus of France
Arkipeller - Genghis Khan of Carthage
Slaze - Suryavarman of Egypt

New civs, new game, mediocre city site...

Settled in place as I saw no reason for moving...

Somebody, who pushed through with restart surely have got some better start now.

BCLG100
27-07-2012, 10:40
Yeah, i'd demand another restart if i was you. Maybe get the person who checks the map to actually check it this time.

socralynnek
27-07-2012, 10:45
Obviously. But someone posted his start in first try and indeed it was pretty unbalanced compared to my start.

I won't complain. It's not that bad and whether I'll have a chance of winning will not bbe dependant on this location, I guess.

(Post before was an answer to akots)

The thing is: There was no real check.

The process was: Someone in the game produced a few maps and just checked very roughly.

Then the host (who plays as well) picked randomly one of them.

I didn't bother to propose someone from outside to check the map though. Maybe I should have asked one of you guys...

As I know that I am probably one of the weaker players in the game and playing more for fun than to win, it is ok for me.

At least, if I lose, I can blame external circumstances.

And, I won't play this game for 10 years without winning!

Settled in place as I saw no reason for moving...

My reason for moving would have been to get a "canal" city in those places where there is only 1 tile between the oceans and getting your boats across the easier way.

Probably not worth it. if the map is archipelago.

socralynnek
27-07-2012, 16:33
Thought about that too. But that owuld move sheep out of the BFC...

Lt. Killer M

that start is a losing start - you need iron working to get your second (bad) food tile into use!

The gold should give you an edge enough to race to IW and mine the gems. The problem is the sugar (is it?) from memory is a crap resource. I would have probably moved south west one tile and hoped something came up, with the gold you'd quickly catch up.

It is not that completely hopeless. But it is somewhat low on food until you build a lighthouse and low on forest. So, it may be a hard start IMO. That said, you usually can get copper/iron somewhere close, go kill a closest neighbor with good lands and win. Otherwise, it is most likely an automatic loss IMHO. So, I'd say it's playable. Maybe ignore everything, rush to that lighthouse after mining and maybe AH. It will be better if you have some seafood under that gold to the east but then, you've got to move the settler a tile to NE to get to shore and get an extra hammer as well.
