Dude.

I'll be moving to Belfast this Saturday. Got a phone call yesterday about a job offer. Today was the interview by phone and I got accepted.

The job starts Monday.

WOW!!! That sounds pretty quick! Or was this in the making already?

So what kind of job is it?

I'll be working for a company called "gem" to work as a corporate helpdesk for Microsoft Azure. Got something to do with cloud computing. Does that ring a bell to anyone? I will have something like two cases per day on average and it will be entirely up to me how to solve them. Contrary to what I am doing now, where I have about one case every 20 minutes and need to follow guide lines to solve them.

Congrats!

They certainly don't give you much time to re-locate do they.

Nice. Then that is really a helpdesk and not a readtherulesdesk.

By the way, in which province of the Netherlands is this Belfast thing? ;-)

Sounds good. Didn't know you were an expert on cloud computing btw. Seems it's the new cool thing in IT land, so good choice on your part :)

@ProPain: I'm not. I'll receive a training. There are only so many people who know about cloud computing, let alone function as helpdesk. It's exciting new stuff, I'll say! :D

@Furiey: I'll stay in a Bed&Breakfast the first week. During that week they'll look for a proper place for me to stay.

Do you need to get a degree in Meteorology to be able to assist with cloud computing? ;-)

By the way, it's not that new, distributed computing was done on projects in the 90s (I remember Seti@Home). What's new is that it might now reach everyday's life

But "Cloud Computing" sounds much more like a selling argument than "distributed computing"... (and surely the infrastructure setup is much more complex now)

Cloud Computing is definitely an interesting topic and I guess, a lot of companies will adapt it over the coming years. And getting training there will surely be of worth for you as well!

Small update (because people read those):
For now the job is a farce as I haven't had a single case yet. I did need more time than the training offered us to learn all about what we have to do, but that time is pretty much over and I'm spending my time on Facebook and what not here. Oh well, it pays. And they say it'll get busier next year.

Twice we didn't have heating. First time for two nights in a row because of a broken boiler, because I hadn't been used for so long. The second time spanded over Christmas, because the heating pipes (which go from the boiler outside the house with a big detour into the house: 10 metres outside!) were frozen over and burst at five different locations. Luckily I was back in the Netherlands for the Christmas holiday and my house mate had an electric heater (locking himself into his room).

Now we don't have water. You can read all about that at http://www.bbc.co.uk/.

Water is overrated anyway.

So you get paid for doing nothing? That tends to get boring very, very fast.

I always felt that economic progress in the UK and Ireland had somehow left standard of living in the dust....

And the Belfast adventure is pretty much over. In two weeks from now I'll be going back to the Netherlands. I'm close to having for a 'proper' job in IT in Amsterdam! [yeah] The last 18 months cannot be summarised, but let's say it did a good thing for my personal development. ;)

I also applied for a job in Helsinki, and was in the selection procedure, but I didn't get it in the end. Probably for the better, cos it was a sales thing. I just wanted to live in Finland again. [rolleyes]

Hm, I figured you'd be going to Finland, but I can't complain you're coming back to Holland. Time for beer (and the return of my boardgame)!

@Shabba: Your game is back in Groningen, but I had no time to return it to your sister there. I'll be in Groningen (or Haren) on the 17th and will deliver it at her address, if you could pass that on to me by PM or so.

It seems I'm also very lucky in finding a place to live! €500 for 50m2 in Sloterdijk, utilities included. Not the handiest neighbourhood, but I ain't complaining. :D

A welcome beer is a neat idea! My living room will be 22 m2, so that might not be big enough for a CDZ get-together if we wanna play Civ there too. But it's been way too long since we all met up, so we can figure something out. :)
