View Full Version : MSN, ICQ, or both?

I was wondering what you're all using as PBEM players. ;)

I've got both, but have a strong preference for ICQ. But as always, Microsoft has purged his own product up everyone's ass. [rolleyes] I stand by the opinion that ICQ is greatly superior: it has a dozen more options. But if you don't like them you can also use ICQ light (which is about the same as MSN). And if you are behind a computer another computer you can go to go.icq.com and then you have a IE-version of ICQ. There's something for everyone.

I leave out AIM and Yahoo Messenger; they're too rare and therefore uninteresting.

Ahh yes, I wonder myself why I use MSM. I guess it's because of habit alone now.

Maybe I should try ICQ again....

We really should all massively move to ICQ [mad2] (as I mentionned a few weeks ago...)

I'm not going to move to icq...I have too many people on msn to swap :(. Trillian isn't an option in noticed.

Then you have both too, like I have Aggie. But at least we can chat with ICQ with fellow PBEM players! http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/yeah.gif

I have both and totally agree with you on the MSN/ICQ issue. Lets switch all together!

Trillian - a friend of mine can't use MSN because of the network at work but ICQ sucks too much for my taste to use it exclusively.

Why does ICQ suck Killer?

anarres: because it (at least in the version I know) always popped up a new annoying window for each message.

i think that has changed. Infact, when somebody opens a chat with you...it seems to continue from the last chat you had with them (that is ICQ lite anyway)

I use all of them via trillian, with the lone exception of ICQ for some reason. Also use IRC, so it's pretty amazing I've got any bandwidth left to browse internet fora :D

hehe, I installed ICQ first, never did get connected with anyone after 2 weeks, I suspect that that no one was really using it even though they were showing they did. MSN, I was chatting in 2 minutes. Unistalled ICQ, not putting that back on based on that experience, very annoying popups also, trillian might be an option, but there seems mixed reviews on that too.

Then you got a very old version of ICQ I think. Or simply with different settings.

Actually ICQ is almost the same as MSN (except that you send a message with ctrl-enter except just enter) but then with a lot optional extra's. :)

hmm, I think I will try trillian, it has an OK ICQ interface doesn't it?

i have changed to full ICQ, just the other day, simply based on the fact that i can get email notifications for my yahoo email and it works great. Although if hotmail had pop access i would'nt need a yahoo email address or ICQ. There is no spam with the yahoo address either.

Trillian is great for ICQ and MSN (and AIM [:P]) Go for it anarres!

Well I already have trillian, what I mean is we should all try it since we have had problems with the MSM service recently.

Trillian here, as most of you had already noticed because of my annoying away messages [rolleyes]. But I have found out now how to turn those off..

One question: can you create chats over ICQ with Trillian? I haven't discovered yet how that works (0.74b)

Same situation here.

I recently tried to get MSN working, but wasn't able to. My MSN passport is valid, I can log on to hotmail.com via browser. But MSN Messenger tries to sign in forever by http-protocoll. With socks, it just says, it could not connect at the moment.

Maybe this should not come as a surprise to me, as I set the proxy to not allow incoming requests. (Lazy me doesn't really like go hunting after the latest Microsoft security patch every other month.)

But maybe the setting is not the true reason. You seem to imply that ICQ would work? Maybe by opening a gateway to the Internet-Relay-Chat-IP?

I use both, ICQ mostly, but have started to use MSN since I started pbemīs

What I used to love about ICQ was the ability to see in real time what somebody else was typing, including corrections. But since everybody here is using MSN, I've uninstalled ICQ.

Have em both now. As soon as I get my hands on c3c, I ll probably start challenging peeps around here (of course all would beat me silly, but that is not important)

Been having troubles with MSN, don't like it either.

ICQ or IRC is my choice of IM.

I spend most of my time on IRC, but I use ICQ and MSN both, as well.

(Not that I play MP much, if at all....)
