I just found out that the game comes with 120 achievements. Most of them are easy, but some of them are very hard. Like, there's an achievement for beating a difficulty level. One for each level... so you'd actually have to play and beat friggin' sandbox mode.

Really.

Well i've beat every level on civ4 so i figure civ 5 shouldn't be a challenge.

Does it say non-WB equipped anyways?

lol, I don;t think I ever beat a sid level game in 3 (and if I did I'm pretty sure it was with extreme settings and lots of restarts) and I don't think I ever bothered to play to lower levels anyway.

Civ 4 I never got to beat immortal, I still have a hard time beating emperor more often than not I get my ass handed to me by the ai.

But I love achievements. I know it's stupid but achievements do actually get me to replay games just to get them......

What?

BCLG100

Well you could do it right now by giving yourself a few hundred tanks at anypoint in the game through the WB. would that stop the gaining the achievment?

Oh, worldbuilder. Well, I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if you can make a script in python that unlocks all achievements at once.

The only time I had a winning Sid game on 3, it was such a mind-boggling, tedious, tiresome experience that I stopped while I was conquering the AI's. And it was a start with 3 cow grasses, 2 rivers, and 3 more cows along the rivers for a few settler/worker factories, on a continent of my own, with shore access to all AI's for trades. Extreme settings, as you said.

I don't think getting all achievements will be hard. With some abuse of city states & small map choices even high dif seems quite doable without spending a lot of time on them

Take Greece or Siam on an archipelago duel map. Companion cav and Narunesa phants = 1 turn war for the win, whatever the difficulty.

I don't know, winning on sandbox mode sounds like a real challenge...

I've just got the Seriously? one - to be beaten to 10 wonders in a row. Simple if you're not building them.

ProPain
27-09-2010, 08:10
@furiey, rofl

Thinking about this, I'm disappointed. Apparently every wonder the AI finishes counts and I consider that to be beat to it by the AI. I presumed this would only count wonders that you are actually builing but get beat by the AI to it. Cause that's what I consider being beat to it. If I never wanted a wonder in the first place, how can I be beat to it.

It's the computer saying you lost a contest you never even entered to begin with. [confused]

Looking at all achievements I do feel they lack any creativity as well. Compared to the WoW/SC2 achievements the Civ V achi's really strike me as an afterthought after they decided to go with Steam. The could have been so much better. Some examples that would be real achievements imho

- beat the game on king level without using or building siege units or city siege
- beat the game on king level without losing a unit
- beat the game on king level without using luxury resources
.....

Did some reading at RBCiv last night : it reminded me of very difficult and creative scenarios they had (and still have). If you want some challenge, that's the place to be !

Some are indeed quite lame. And many of them are also quite easy. I've now completed three games, and already I've gotten 42 of the 120 "achievements"... Pretty easy indeed.

Sounds like some of those facebook games which have those cheesy achievements, which i guess are to keep people interested in playing their games. Don't know why a proper game like civ feels the need to go down to that path

ProPain
30-09-2010, 08:48
I so agree with Darkness & Rik, most of these achievements will just trigger when playing a normal game and are lame. There's no sense of achieving something involved at all. I think this is really a missed opportunity for Firaxis as achievements can be really good.

What puzzles me is that these achievements leave the impression they were thought up during lunch break the day before release. Even with a little more effort and creativity they could have come up with achievements that would have been so much better.

These achievements, the game's bugs, no MP save button: all these things show Firaxis/2K really don't mind releasing a game that's just not finished and tested correctly. But obviously we've seen this all before with Civ III/IV as well.

I think this, "we can patch it later mentality" is one of the drawbacks of the internet.

I've got the musketeers (I think your unit needs to be flanked, not his, although it's easy enough to get 3 muskets that are in a 369 pattern around a hex and flank both at the same time). Maybe you need the honor flanking bonus to make it a double though, idk.

However when I tried my little poney (get HBR first as Catherine) it never let me. I tried it on settler, duel map, no ruins, and somehow the settler AI beat me to it ?! Does the AI have to research it after you do?

Also, I purposefully did a circumnavigation on an archi map with a single unit and it didn't get me Magellan.

I began the Paul Murphy but got discouraged after the first tab [blush]

The "My little pony" achievement works. I got that one on king level fairly easily. It's a really straightforward and logical strategy for Russia actually. Just beeline for Horseback riding (which requires only Animal husbandray and the Wheel). Should be fairly simple on all but the highest levels.

Also, I purposefully did a circumnavigation on an archi map with a single unit and it didn't get me Magellan.

Magellan is bugged. It doesn't work. The same goes for about 10-12 other achievements actually, like for example: "Tomb raider", "Cat fight" and "I have the power"

Overall the achievements seem to be quite amusing, but not worth putting any effort in. I've now finished 9 games, and already I have 70 achievements without putting any focussed effort into getting them. The one from Bismarck about conquering 10 barbarian camps and getting the barbarians to join your army actually took me completely by surprise a couple of days ago.

Descriptions of the ones with names:
By the Waters of Babylon - Beat the game on any difficultly setting as Nebuchadnezzar II.
The Golden Horde - Beat the game on any difficultly setting as Genghis Khan.
Khan - Beat the Mongol scenario on any difficulty.
Great Khan - Beat the Mongol scenario on the King or harder difficulty level.
Supreme Khan - Beat the Mongol scenario on the Emperor or harder difficulty level.
Kublai Khan - Beat the Mongol scenario on the Immortal or harder difficulty level.
Genghis Khan - Beat the Mongol scenario on the Deity difficulty level.
Khaaan! - Run out of time to beat the Mongol scenario.

I don't know if any of these work yet though as I have beaten the game both with Nezzy and Gengis Kahn.

From the icons on the un-named ones the speculation is that they're for 2 new Civs soon to be released - probably Spain and Incans.

With any luck they might even fix the broken achievements!

'The mongol scenario'........WTF is that.

Never knew we got a scenario with Genghis.

It's a pretty fun pre-set map scenario in which you play the Mongol horde under Ghengis Khan. You start with about 5 or 6 mounted units and 1 great general (and 1 city) and you hav eto destroy 4 mayor civs in 100 turns.

I played around with it some and it's a nice scenario. Haven't gotten around to finishing it yet...

I'm at 99 achievements now (out of 140, but I won't be able to get about 20 'cause they're either bugged (cat fight, etc.) or in DLC's I don't own (Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition, etc.)).

I only got 51 achievements. I stopped playing it after I got frustrated with trying ICS on deity. It seems ICS is not so viable after the latest big patch, so I guess that I'm now frustrated by the new patch. I expect to play civ5 again when I have a decent shot at winning through spamming cities. That, or I'll just try beating deity on larger maps: with my new cpu I assume it's possible to play larger maps than normal map size.

Furiey

I'm now up to 86 and am also frustrated that the log no longer updates. I've just started a game as Elizabeth - how many more ships do I have to sink? I was bad enough getting Sulieman's 10, but a couple of hundred? I really wish I could see how much more I have to slog through it. I think Defense Grid is calling me, or maybe PvZ.

Darkness

Yes, but only SP, not MP. MP is woefully unbalanced.

The AI still has issues with the 1 UPT rule and does not understand that keeping some units in reserve is really useful in a war. But after the patch I feel the game is much improved. There are still plenty of things to fix, but for me these are not game-breakers.

The fact that the log doesn't update anymore and that a few simple bugs haven't been fixed (lancer's still don't register in the game stats) are quite annoying, but all in all I like the game quite a bit right now.

I have goten the game for X-mas. (Thanks to all beta testers)

For the moment I am quite please with the single player experience I get. I must admit that I have not gotten a "Only one more turn" feeling like this since I played Civ2.

Why? I don't know. Maybe it is because it feels as a whole new game, not just a new version of previous version with a couple add-on.

I still have to give it a couple plays at higher levels before giving it a real "thumbs up".

I used the holidays to try to get an archepelo space win with Washington at Emporer and it just didn't really work well. Units were very bunched up and the AI ICS'd the whole map, making for fairly annoying games. I may try again, but on a maximum land-mass style map.

Still missing:

Tomb raider is considered to be bugged and those that have got it to have used a steam achievement hack on both CFC and the 2k forum.

I've got most of the Kahn ones still to get, the 1,000 of whatever apart from roads, the new polynesian ones (not got the DLC) as well as those 4 you mentioned. I need to know the map better to do the Mongol scenario at the high levels and can't face another deity game at the moment.

So there is a hack that fixes the bug and they havent fixed it yet officially? Last Man Standing is hard to get because people quit. I played MP when it first came out and the last guy quit on me and no achievement.

Furiey
18-03-2011, 09:13
It doesn't fix the bugs per se, it allows you to hack steam achievements. Any steam achievements in any game. Some people have been pretty obvious in its use, gaining the majority of the achievements at the same time, in this and other games. Some forums have banned members who they deemed to have used it - I found one forum that has done this while trying to search out the problems with tomb raider and that mentioned another. Using it would also be against the steam agreement, but I don't know if anyone has lost their account over this. Once I realised that some of the achievements had only been achieved with a hack I stopped trying to find how to make them work and just hope they fix them soon.

You could just play a couple of games against someone you know.

For example, I could play a couple of duel size, quick speed pangea map games against Furiey. Each of us will propbably win at least once, and I'd say it's a safe bet that we both won't quit on each other 'cause we're losing... :)

Darkness, yes, good idea about the multiplayer. Other things to do at the moment though so it'll be a while before I'm ready to give it go.

I'm not in any rush. I'm playing RTW now anyway. :)

I wonder if Firaxis will follow the same route again? Another patch first, to get interest for the DLC up and then release the DLC a few days later.

I do hope they start fixing the broken content soon (removed achievements), because right now they've just removed it instead of fixing it, and that's a rather weak move, IMHO...

The number they've added is the same as they have removed, so I suppose it is possible that they will add back the bugged ones as fixed rather than new ones for new DLC. I feel the DLC is more likely but I'm sure we'll see soon, they didn't get left with placeholder names for long last time.

Looks like they are for the new DLC. The Korean distributor for Civ 5 has announced that Korea will be in the next DLC released.

If anyone can read Korean, here's the link (http://civilization5.co.kr). Look under the 뉴스 (news) section.

"Tomb Raider" has been fixed. I just got it conquering a modern age Egyptian city....

I tried earlier but neither annexing or puppeting gave the achievement. I must have tried too early and they'd not built any burial mounds yet.
