Ok, so i've had worse starts but not much worse. Switched the hammers to the plains forest to crank out that warrior just incase, i figure i may even try a warrior rush if i can find someone early. I can crank out 4 warriors in 20 turns, plus 10 turns movement to try and find someone and i doubt that they would have anything more than 1 or at most 2 warriors in, if they have 2 then it's all down to luck but it will hopefully just be the one, especially as i have my auto strength.

If i cant find anyone and i hope that i have some resource near me i'll chop the trees and rush, either way unless i can take someone out early then i am not going to be a factor in this game at all.

Whiner. It's not like your stuck on an island with enough room for one city due to the ice and tundra.

Ok, so I've done a bit of exploring- produced my first warrior in addition to my exploring scout.

He has gone North in search of people and luckily found a Gold resource with a handy food resource nearby, still no bloody rivers which is very annoying.

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6924/3640bc.jpg (http://img34.imageshack.us/i/3640bc.jpg/)

Quite weirdly as well the resource icons are pointing down as if to suggest I'm in the top half of the world but the only thing beneath me is Tundra so I'm not too sure what is going on there.

My scout is just about to pop its 5th hut and the other 4 have been gold, i could really do with this one being something actually useful!

In other news someone has found me; Irgy (India)
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3429/firstcontactirgy.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/i/firstcontactirgy.jpg/)

And accompanying PM;
Hello

We've made contact In the MTDGII Warmup pitboss game. You can probably see my explorer warrior is sitting next to your borders. I knew it was coming as I saw them last turn, although I wasn't sure if it was you or the other blueish-purple civ.

What's the best way for us to communicate? I couldn't get any of the in-game communication things to work very well. This is my first pitboss so I'm still getting used to these things.

There's not much to talk about yet, but our capitals being so close there's presumably going to be plenty more to talk about in the future.

I'll give you a bit of geographic info for free to hopefully start off some amicable relationships. I'm situated to the northwest of you. To the north and west of me appears to be ocean, so it looks like you will be my primary land border.

If we can get along and stay peaceful then it appears that will provide both of us with a large front that we don't have to worry about.

Best of luck in game, hope you can find something other than pigs somewhere (I have pigs in my BFC as well by the way, maybe we should name our continent "Porkia" or something).

To which i replied
Hey,

I got a diplo screen from you when i logged in but it was blank. You've got to hit enter and then press send and even then it is tempermental at best, especially when nothing is actually offered.

PM here would probably be the best method of communication due to the game chat being annoying at best.

In response your geographic info, my scout has gone east and about 20 tiles directly east i've hit ocean but not actually found anyone else. Beneath me is tundra which seems to continue all along. Oddly we appear to be in the North of the map (the resources icons facing down) but i have a tonne of tundra beneath me so unless the axis have been flipped I can't think of any other explanation other than a dodgy map.

I'll have to explore a little further north to find you before i can agree to any lasting treaty as, if as you say, our cities are already close then we shall need an adequate border zone between each other.

Best,
BCLG

So his warrior is out exploring, he is new to pitboss and he hasn't even thought about a peace treaty so far, my second warrior will be finished next turn and then I have a decision to make.

Do i warrior rush the guy?

Now this is a test pitboss is one of the things putting me off, it's meant to be a learning curve for people- it'd be very harsh for me to end someones game so quickly.

Now, if I do decide to proceed- should my warrior (which has switched direction to find him) find the borders soon- should i just plow straight in with that or wait for another 10 turns and three more warriors to be built. At this point i would have 4, with strength 1- able to attack, I haven't done the math but I think the odds would be quite strongly in my favour but If i am worried then i could always add a 5th (as it is unlikely anyone would bother protecting their capital with more than 2 warriors nor have the time to get copper hooked up and as he doesn't start with hunting that would be ~20 turns to beeline towards archery.

It's a definite puzzler i suppose, any input?

he posted his start in the main thread (everyone was doing it. i didn't)

http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=246773&d=1268981966

So would make a very awesome GP farm

edit- and his post seems to imply he was not going down the military route-

Not too bad, but really, why couldn't the warrior and settler be the other way around! Not the best leader for this start either, I don't have fishing and I'm two techs away from animal husbandry. I could end up hooking up the marble before the pigs at this rate...

Think that's settled then, i'll go for a warrior rush- build another few and then just rush in.

It's a test game...so maybe the best way to show him what pitboss is also about...if his capital is nice, then get it...

OTOH, he might make a good pet civ to have if you can talk him into some treaties...

Popped Sailing, fairly useful if i could use it at all, however as I'm inland by what appears to be quite a distance- maybe not so much!

edit- Irgy also popped a tech last turn, meaning he has two warriors out scouting- this means that at most he can have one warrior at home defending.

Popped mining from a hut as well, sending my scout into tundra in the hope of finding more huts rather thank looking for people.

warrior popped myst in a hut. Doing pretty well with these huts now

BCLG100

Finding lots of huts but the animals are out to play, lost my scout which was unfortunate and may lose a warrior this turn, hopefully not as he is in a forest but you never know!

Anywhoo here is the capital

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/6028/2920bccapital.jpg (http://img404.imageshack.us/i/2920bccapital.jpg/)

The worker can chop out a settler first i think, then proceed from there to *probably* here;
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/7500/2920bcpossiblefirstcity.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/i/2920bcpossiblefirstcity.jpg/)
Around where the warrior is to the north (near the lion) to grab the gold and the ivory.

In other news i have eventually found Irgy;
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/926/2920bcmapofworld.jpg (http://img685.imageshack.us/i/2920bcmapofworld.jpg/)
The fact his capital is now a holy city means that at somepoint we will be warring but i figure i'll delay it and base it on just where the resources are. If i can get coppy soonish then i'll rush him as I don't think he will have it in his fat cross as it is mostly forest, one of my warriors is going to scout the other side.

Finally the demographics
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3554/2920bcdemographics.jpg (http://img534.imageshack.us/i/2920bcdemographics.jpg/)

20 odd turns in and someone has 34gpp means they went for a worker fairly sharpish and have a few nice gold hills they are getting on with which sucks a bit but ohwell at least i don't have Robi's start!

Edit- dunno what's going on with the crazy demo screenie but cant be bothered to go back in to get another just yet so you'll have to wait until next time!

Lt. Killer M

two ivory, gold, a food lux - this will make for a fine city, even early on, despite having no river! Two lux means pop, huts on ivory give research....... Yes, melikes!

Finished BW and got locations of copper
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7916/copperlocation.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/copperlocation.jpg/)

The other one is very far north and out of my reach, so the question is whether i still settle the gold/ivory city first and then the copper or settle the copper first.

I feel more inclined to go for the gold/ivory city and simply chop out both settlers. I'm also going to need quite a few workers in the absence of rivers. With the copper city I think I may just settle 1 NE of the tile as I already have marble in my capital so there is no reason to worry about getting that now.

Bit of an update

Here is a map of no-settle i just sent to Irgy
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/5092/mapforirgy.jpg (http://img97.imageshack.us/i/mapforirgy.jpg/)

My city will be plonked right on it so there is little he can do to argue about it.

Here is the capital, chopped out the settler, will finish working the pigs and then send that worker on the hill to the south and chop out a worker when the cap reaches size 4. Then will build another settler at size 5 (quickish growth from pigs).
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5451/civ4screenshot0015c.jpg (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0015c.jpg/)

Here is my tech tree, showing the benefits of my lucky hut popping
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4348/civ4screenshot0016.jpg (http://img27.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0016.jpg/)

Which is a very good thing because my demographics suck
http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/64/civ4screenshot0017.jpg (http://img594.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0017.jpg/)

Explained by everyone growing their capital (LP has built two wonders already, everyone clearly has their priorities in order and forgetting this is an MP game where land=win) Judging from the civstats i *should* be the first to have a city going.

I also met someone new, way off to the south west 'celeizul' or something along those lines. So far he has been unresponsive to my ingame messages.

Also realised that tech trading is on for this game :( so that means my plans to smack irgy about have been put on hold because I will need teching partners, plus there does seem to be a very wide room to expand to my east.

Just thought, this is the first time ever I will be playing civ without a ladyfriend (who is regularly around) in my life, so anyone got any ideas on a theme for city names? I'm not going with spam related products

BCLG100
27-06-2010, 12:21
I've been a bit lax updating this, exams/coursework etc so I've got a fairly large update to be cracking along with :)

[Uhttp://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9966/civ4screenshot0027.jpg (http://img714.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0027.jpg/)

This is the capital, doing well- it's currently running two scientists but is generally a relatively good production city. It's obviously not that useful in the long run but ohwell!

http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/2488/civ4screenshot0032.jpg (http://img803.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0032.jpg/)

My third city, just whipped a library so is growing back (hence 2) but I'll wait for it to hit size four and then maybe run a couple of scientists for a bit.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9383/civ4screenshot0028t.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0028t.jpg/)

My second city, it's doing pretty well- has a library and a granary in it iirc.

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/7492/civ4screenshot0030.jpg (http://img541.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0030.jpg/)

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/7954/civ4screenshot0029v.jpg (http://img188.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0029v.jpg/)

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7042/civ4screenshot0031.jpg (http://img156.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0031.jpg/)

The following three are my new cities, all built in the past 7ish turns all built to make use of the 3 commerce sea tiles because land for cottaging is so poor around nearby.

Barbs are becoming a bit of an issue due to the ice around down the bottom;
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/359/civ4screenshot0033.jpg (http://img710.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0033.jpg/)

Now this would not be so bad but they are completely ignoring all my fog busters and just charging straight through into my territory. This again wouldn't be an issue if i was having any luck with the combat simulator but I am not and already lost a couple of double woodsman warriors to standard barb warriors. The barbs have now moved on to axes as well which is a treat. I guess the counterpoint is that my units which survive will be able to gain some fairly good experience fighting them.

Before I crack on, probably best to explain the situation on the island. Obviously I have found Irgy but I have also found grant (well he found me) and silentconfusion. Both of the late comers have fairly poor starts apparently, SC with an ice surrounding capital (abit like robi apparently) and grant is on an island which he has to sail off. However, we have banded together to have a tech alliance, now initially this benefits us all but as the game progresses i doubt grant and SC will be able to contribute as much but I see no reason to not keep it going as long as possible because it sounds like neither have any land I want to conquer.
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7279/civ4screenshot0037v.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0037v.jpg/)

So the tech is going pretty well, in large part carried by my teching recently; I've teched alpha, math and aesthetics in the time irgy has completed monarchy. I'm sure there are circumstances surrounding why it has taken him so long (he say's the pre reqs are expensive etc) but it is a little annoying that my empire is busting a gut trying to get these techs, it also looks like I would have CoL before he finishes currency even though he apparently started it straight after monarchy!

The initial plan was for me to grab lit next but doesn't seem like a cracking idea when TGL is gone so i've switched, Irgy might be a bit annoyed as he wanted to build the GP National wonder(i forget its name).

Now the next annoyance in the game
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7903/civ4screenshot0036.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0036.jpg/)

The city with every wonder is Lord Parkins, what kind of tards are allowing someone who is industrious and blatantly has both marble and stone nearby the comfort to build that many wonders and not even try and take him down a notch?! He's already ~100 points ahead of everyone, people are even trading with him, it just seems ridiculous that they would allow someone so close to get such a lead!

Right now time for the demographics
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/1852/civ4screenshot0035.jpg (http://img265.imageshack.us/i/civ4screenshot0035.jpg/)

The insane GNP is obviously Lord Parkin with all his wonders, my gnp is fairly high right now- i can generally change that or mfg tiles around to get in the top 4 for either but rarely higher and my food is lacking at best. The trouble is that I can only work with what I've got, hopefully in the long run due to the amount of space I have available then if i can simply keep up with the leaders that I can make use of it long term.

Currently I need to go on a worker push, so my capital is going to pump a couple out, as will my second city. I'll get to about 10 and then start cranking out the settlers again. I'm not too worried about infrastructure but I will probably start using some of them forests around my capital to get them out quicker. Currently running at 100% in the hope i can maybe grab CoL and get the religion, i doubt I will but it wouldn't hurt to have courthouses anyway. Also I should have a scientist soon after which I can probably use to bulb philo and get a religion that way if possible.

Finally, everyone loves a dot map;
http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9382/dotmap350bc.jpg (http://img707.imageshack.us/i/dotmap350bc.jpg/)

These three cities are going to be quite a distance from my capital so hence the need to get workers out and sort out my cities closer to home, however Grant is in that direction so they will need to be settled sooner rather than later. The city up with the flood plains is a priority as I might be able to swing that as a crappy GP farm and then the stone/copper city. As i wouldn't mind stone but it would also cut off the third city with the hills and possible area for a bit of cottaging.

And the demo, they're ok. Not brilliant but not shit. I just don't know how to raise them up with the land i have and the neighbours i enjoy.

Still sharing everything with my three neighbours but have met Lord Parkin now as well who has an extensive tech lead. Just gonna keep building for the time being, using MP extensively to grow and trying to hold back on the whipping.

Have you already seen any ships? Otherwise it might pay off getting to Optics to meet the rest of the pack.

Maybe you are lucky to have someone weak somewhere nearby.

LP's ship just met mine, i've got optics and recently sent my caravels wandering. More with a view to getting that circumnavigate bonus than meeting people if im honest as 2 extra moves on top of the base (viking trading post) would be brilliant.

Any luck in getting some people to realize that they're allowing Miss Parkin to run away with the win in this game?

I gave up reading that thread after my last post as it just angered me so who knows. I do hope that those not receiving tech from him realise that, i know my 3 buddies know and we're trying to ally with the other continent to attack or at least out tech them.

He tried offering me deals earlier, OB in one box and luxury trade in another. I assume my post was vague and unclear as to what it meant.

SilentConfusion has been AIed in the meantime...not much happening...
