Yet another PBEM after all. The last one was rather fun, we know each other well and we're both rather evenly matched. (I got a bit more MP experience, though.) For those who didn't know yet: Niek and I both studied human geography, and we did an essay for the migration course together when we learned that we're both fond of Civ4.

Standard sized map, 5 AI's, map type: shuffle, rocky, high sea level, normal speed.
Options: aggressive AI, choose religion, no tech brokering.
All victory options.
Difficulty level: monarch. (We both consider that tough, so we might need each other here.)

Random leaders, which resulted in
Matrix: Saladin,
NHJ: Sitting Bull.
(I think I got the better one.)

Decent starting location. I can live with it. :)
I'm taking the gamble for the Polytheism religion.

I personally love sitting bulls traits and Uu, if you can sort it out well you can easily knock over a few civilisations with a rax, a totem pole, some dogs and a handful of triple promoted archers. So don't underestimate them :)

True. But I'm not good at early wars; nor is NHJ, I think.

I just met Stalin and got Fishing from a hut! :D

And another hut gave me Mining! [eek]
Fishing is particularly handy to get Polytheism a.s.a.p., because with the clams I can get two food and two commerce from such a tile.

I met NHJ! And Brennus.

And Stalin is too close to my liking.

Our warriors reached each others borders at exactly the same time. Then I couldn't contain my curiosity, so I declared war to have a peak. Apparently his starting location isn't the best imaginable. He'll need Maoi Statues badly. [lol]

His warrior will undoubtly scout my region too, but that's ok, cos I'm building a work boat anyway. My only fear is the damage it might've done on my reputation, making the AI attack me even more eagerly.

Oh, and I've founded Christianity. http://www.straland.com/images/smilies/preach.gif

I don't think it should hurt your reputation much if at all with the AI this early in the game as there would be any bonds or attachments to other civs

That's a terrible spot for a starting location. I'd say he's probably having to worry about getting a worker and a settler out to even have a shot. And now possibly 2 or 3 units to defend with since you're harassing him. This should be an easy victory.

I think, if he handles it well, it's not so bad at all. The corn and clams are good for a lot of food, popping out workers and settlers easily. He should chop the forests on the hills to rush build Maoi Statues. And with mines on them, they're good for some production as well. It could become a killer capital if, again, he handles it well!

You can just put a warrior on the forested hill and he can't do anything. Then it's simply up to you when it ends, reinforce it with a couple more warriors or an archer and you've won the game.

And so I did. But now he killed it with a Dog Soldier(!) and his warrior is still wandering through my land.

He came with a dog soldier which I tried to kill with three archers. I failed, so it's end of story. (I threw in my warrior afterwards as well.)

why did you attack his DS on a forest tile?

Matrix

Because I couldn't let him stay there. He didn't have a fortify bonus as of yet, and otherwise I'd had to build at least two more archers. That would hurt my progress so much that I could give it up anyway.

Would it really have been so bad to let his sit around? OK, two more archers ARE a drain.... were barbs off in this game?

Barbarians weren't off. And I agree the decision to attack is questionable, but who knows, there might've been another dog soldier on it's way...

I'll start a new spoiler in a minute. :)

Pretty quick game :)
