I am Mao Zedong; Expansive (2 health, 25% faster on building workers, and double production on granary and harbor) and Protective (Garrison 1 & Drill 1 for archery and gunpowder units , double production of walls and castle), UU = Chonoku; a crossbow with an extra first strike, UB = Pavilion; a theatre that also gives 25% culture. China is supposed to start with Agriculture and mining, but I have fishing and the wheel.

Propain is pink with Industrious (50% wonder production, double production of forge) and Protective (Garrison 1 & Drill 1 for archery and gunpowder units , double production of walls and castle). That would mean he is Qin Shi Huang; also China. I wonder what his starting techs are.

My start:

It looks good. Next to the sea, some good tiles around. I would have liked to start on a hill, but no such luck. This map is requested to be really small so I don't want to waste a turn in moving.

The game suggest Shanghai as capital name, virtually guaranteeing that Propain is also China. The tiles that have just become visible aren't anything special, only a clam outside the fat-x. I start on a warrior for protection, while the original warrior starts to move a bit. Not too far, since producing a warrior takes 15 turns. City grows in 8. It will take some time before we can afford a settler or a worker.

Research. I consider pottery, because of the good amount cottage tiles and a granary, mining for bronze for slavery and myst for a religion since there are no (pre-calendar) happyness resources around. I decide on Myst since the lack of a worker in the short future makes pottery, animal husbandry and bronze working slightly less favourable. It's a risk since Propain might have Myst already. I'll know soon enough.

City is tuned for maximum growth speed.

whew.. that's quite a write-up. I never fully grasped civ4. I just wondered aimlessly until I was killed. It'll be interesting to follow this.

How far are you taking your warrior? if the map is indeed "really small" then PP is very close. I presume there are no AI.

Looks like a promising start...

PP's score went up so it seems he's researched a tech. No mentioning of Buddhism found in a distant land it seems that religion is still available. If it is Myst that he did than I might just be too late to grab a religion at this research speed. So I've changed tiles from hammers to gold so now I'm going full speed in research.

Next turn: hut pop. The city is safe as I can finish a warrior in 3 or 4 turns, if I need to.

The religion gamble worked; I got to Meditation first. I chose Islam, as not to give Propain any clues at what reli-tech I researched. And since he is very inexperienced in cIV chosing Hinduism as to hint I did Poly is a bit lame and abusing his inexperience. Propain does have the same score as I do, but there were no religion founded in a distant land-messages. So either he missed out on the Meditation religion [assw] or he's taking a different path.

I haven't revolted yet as I can't use any of Islam's benefits yet. I've slowed down research and focussed on food again. I'm going mining and then pottery, while I'm starting a worker soon.

A hostile hut made sure my scouting warrior got killed. Too bad, he was close to surviving with a large amount of XP's ...

I've spotted PP's borders. I think a trireme would be a nice unit... [nya]

maybe 2 or 3 full galleys would do the trick too

Great spoiler :)

one hint (which will also go in PP's spoiler): you can see whether a tech giving a religion has been researched by clicking the tech bar at the top of the screen. This turns it into a selection bar, offering all techs you can research. If the tech has been researched by someone else, the icon looks normal, if it is still unknown and its religion unfounded it has a little icon added. usually, this displays the religion, so it is the religion's icon, but if 'select religion' is on (as it is here) you will see the generic religion icon, two clasped hands or something. You can also mouse over the tech in the tech tree, and the text that appears will either say 'First to discover founds a religion' or not.

As for the map: I wanted to give you guys something to think with the civs, and keep the game within a reasonable balance. Therefore, I tweaked both civs a bit ;)

A bit of a moment here. A barb next to my capital, which is defended by a 0XP warrior and next to my just finished cottage. I hope he attacks, since he is only 1,6. Worst case scenario: moving to the cottage, pillage it and threaten my worker. I am in no position to fight him.

Luckily he died in the IBT.

I got copper close, that is good. :)

This is going to be the plan: sailing and then metal casting. With them I can build trireme's to fuck with Propain, who -as you can see- is really close. With that trireme I can remove any workboats PP has and force Propain to take a landroute if he wants to come for me. Barbarians have been annoying already (killed my scouting warrior and apparently also PP's) so that is not a safe route. And I give myself the option to go by sea to PP, so that will also force him to count on that. My trireme will give me security from naval invasion at best, and at worst early notification.

Killer said that our city 21's are the same, so I can count on PP having a sea-tendency. Till my trireme, that is [whistle]

PP's score jumped to 239 in the IBT. his borders didn't expand, his city didn't grow. I don't think he's build a wonder. Could be an expensive tech or a revolution. We haven't met yet, so I have no direct info.

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/5264/pp9lv2.jpg

At the moment I have 2 cottages on the floodplains (1 is already a hamlet and the other one will be next turn), 2 workboats on the crabs and I have mined the copper and my worker is busy on the horses. Sailing is due in 1. The abundance of food (+7 at the moment, even with only 1 from the copper) shouts: "WHIP ME", so I have already revolted to slavery. I am contemplating whipping a granary for the quick regrowth after whipping. I already get a discount on the granary due to the Expansive trait, so it may not be necessary. I might also whip out landunits to scout for a 2nd city site and for promotions against barbs. Don't know yet. Any advise ?

City site 2 will be near -or on- the silver. Happyness resources are still few.

Everything is set up to do the trireme-annoyance thing. I just build my second city this turn and I am building a chariot for scouting and some battles. Barbarian-level seems to be on raging. That might be a reason to try for the great wall - no barbs in my land, so all go to his; double great general points within my borders (useful in a wargame) and spypoints. Not sure I will try for it though. If I do I will need the stone.

I met a ProPain scout on the stone. So there is a landbridge. That reduces the value of my trireme-scheme since I am now not guaranteed safety from the east, but it will function as an early-warning system for landattacks.

Propain is ahead of me in several fields and has build his 2nd city sooner than I have. I'm still convinced my trireme-scheme will throw him back a bit since it will remove all seatiles from his capital.

I poprushed a trireme and it's now on Propain's borders. He should be able to see it this turn. :)
Also notice the chariots scouting and fighting. I'm leading in the powergraph now, although the pop-rush threw me back in score and other fields. Not seriously though, as the sacrificed citizens were all unhappy.

I'm not quite sure what you're refering to...Nothing wrong with Cottages on Flood plains....possibly the worker crapping a coin?? Is that what your laughing at?

socralynnek

I think he was referring to the workers having different orders which would mean that the cottage would be completed but replaced by a farm afterwards, I guess...
