Anyone playing the best FPS ever? It plays a lot like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, with some comedy and very fancy "The Incredibles" graphics!

Check this nice fanmade movie: Ignis solus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC_aGQyFETU) (the lonely pyro, my favorite class)

In a move of superawesomeness, Valve lets you play TF2 for free this weekend! (http://www.steampowered.com/goldrush/) If you're remotely into first person shooters, you have to try this one. It's really a lot of fun.

With the 118th update you could build unlimited sentries. It's cp_gorge btw.

I added you (I think, considering the avatar), my steam page is here (http://steamcommunity.com/id/shabbaman). I made a CDZ steam group (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/CivDuelZone) in anticipation of civ5 btw.

Propain asked me to teach him how not to suck at this game. As I'm not THAT cruel I promised to link him to some useful articles on how to start with this brilliant game.

This article basically sums up everything you need to know to start: How to stay alive longer than one minute (http://www.ubercharged.net/2007/11/06/how-to-stay-alive-longer-than-one-minute-2/). Really, just start as a soldier and spam, follow your teammates and try to stick to a medic. Over time you'll recognise the map (when Badlands was new it took me a week before I realised that the map was mirrored), and where the ammo and healthpacks are. Look at what other players do and try to copy that (eventually). Playing medic taught me a lot, because you can see what better players do from a bit of a distance. Unless you know how to play the class it's not really going to be rewarding to play medic on a public though.

So, play soldier and spam.

Really amusing to read. Will giving it a spin soon. Also worked my way through the first part of Half Life2. I like the story driven approach but still this SP FPS isn't really for me.

This game is now free to play. Which means that it doesn't cost money. None. Basically this means that the price v.s. quality equation is infinite, so there's no reason not to play it. I can see some reasons why you won't play it:

a. you suck at first person shooters (solution: read the article I linked Propain to some posts earlier)
b. your computer can't run it (solution: use this (http://www.fakkelbrigade.eu/chris/configs/cfg/getconfig.php?conf=maxframes) config)

I choose a, b , c and d.

With c) being: other games have better values in reward vs time and money equation (although costing more...)

d) I have no disk space for more games left (ok, I know it's a bad excuse)

But then again, there is Fact a.

Shabbaman

Option C isn't a real option if you're going infinite ;)

Fun
----------------------
(time + money )

Shabbaman
05-07-2011, 16:37
But according to that calculation a game that you don't play and that costs more money equals more fun than a game you played a lot and have spent money on.

socralynnek

If I don't play a game, then the fun is negative. And time also means time for getting the game (or getting it started)

Fun is kind of an integral, that sums up the fun over time. And sadly, there are games where the fun started positive, but turned into negative fun, making the amount of fun decrease.

( see: Colonization II )

But normally, if I play a game for a lot of time, then hat means, that fun is positive and Fun still increases.

(Sometimes buying a game is itself fun, therefore some games already start at a positive value)

Could you write that formula down to make it clearer?

socralynnek

I think, we'd need to ask PP to add vbCode for integrals first...

Or you could just admit that you suck at shooters ;)

I suck at shooters :) This might be fun though, it's smooth and nicely colored, except for the part where blood is red and fire is red and explosions are red and ubercharge is red and one of the teams is red. The rest is great so far, for a shooter.

Shabbaman

I've been saying that for years, but nobody would listen ;) Well, considering that the game is a few years old now, I expect that most people have a system that would actually run the game (although you might want to run an FPS config). It's a game with a very casual atmosphere (the cartoon graphics might help with that ;) ) and a lot of humor (which you might or might not get when you're new to the game). Even if you can't aim, the game is easy on you with classes like medic or engineer. If your aim is a bit less shitty you can probably play with the projectile based classes (SHOOT ROCKET AT FEET).

Underneath the cartoon graphics is a very good shooter though. This might not be obvious at first glance, especially if you don't know anything about shooters. But the config of the game, the part that decides when you can respawn and where, how score is calculated, is very good compared to a lot of shooters. Almost every shooter revolves about hitscan weapons ("bullets"), and all these games have issues with hit registration. But the game lacks every form of realism (besides gravity), and that's what people like in games like Call of Duty (which I think is a dull, slow and boring game).

And because that's too much text, here's one of the game's official promotion trailers:
