Settings:
Archi map (was no option for fractal archi), low seas, huge, no vassals, no tech trading, civs as requested, and all victory conditions enabled. No other special conditions, and the game is on a 20 hour turn time.
DM's will not be tolerated unless the general consensus is that all attempts were made by the DMer to avoid having to do it. Not a lawyer so I don't know how to be ridiculously specific about this, but you're all grown ups and no how to handle this.
My start is absolute poo :( hows everyone elses?

I would not be against a restart- just so folk know.
Main reason is i have tundra outside my fat cross and then ice after that.
Yeah, I have an crap starting spot as well. So is everyone cool with a restart then?
My capital is ok, but I have my doubts about the surroundings.

How many times do we want to restart? Can we at least let the other's check thier spot? Maybe you three are the only ones with bad starts.
Hm, three out of six starts are crap. How much chance do you think there is everyone will have a reasonable start when we restart? By the way, this is what you get with archipelago maps anyway.
If we restart we should ask someone not in this game to generate a map and check the starting positions.

I think thats the best idea. I dont mind playing on with this game just i wouldnt playing a start which has some appeal.
Well, starts on archipelago maps are mostly crappy especially after RtW that would seem for China and thus BCLG became quite upset. ;)
Checking the starts by somebody not playing is a good idea IMO, just to make sure that everyone gets a crappy start.
I don't mind playing it either, just thought I'd wait for a yay or nay from you lot :)

I like it! That doesn't mean it's a good or bad start, but it's definately a start that's worth playing...

From what i read no one got a brilliant start, we all seem to have some issues. I would say play on, overcoming a less the ideal start is part of the challenge.
Also as Barbu said, how do you judge how good a start is, it is a subjective thing. One way would be for all of us to post our starting positions but would we all agree to that? Even then we we need a good 20-30 turns exploring to really work out what we have to work with for the begining of the game.

yeah play on... a bad start usually means a prime city nearby... law of averages.

My start is OK, not quite shining but certainly playable.
I would describe my start as adequate, depending on what's over the horizon & strategic resources.

Im not able to connect to this game atm, but I can connect to the Arboria game just fine and I see Mauer player and Mauer server on Ham Sushi. Dont need a rollback or anything Im not doing squat but just wondering what was up.
anyone else having problems? I see a few of you haven't finished your turn with under 3 hours to go. I was able to log in, so I'm figuring that KC tooled around with his specs. Well, since he said as much anyways. If we're having problems though, I'll take it down until we fix it and roll back if need be. Just let me know.

Well looks like I made a post that didnt post. Hamachi forums tell me that the problem is on your end M. Dont know how that could be since everyone else connects (but I can connect to other games?). So if you could AI me for a bit until support gets back to me that would be ok.
cane has been AIed. If there's anything that could be wrong on my end please share the info. All I know is that I'm able to connect to my pitboss and to Indiansmoke's, and that others can connect to me except for KC.
Gone are the days where playing multiplayer just involved attaching a file to an email eh?
Cant connect. It says Mauer the player is active but Mauer the server is not. ITs OK for the turn to roll over. I had a build que and planned moves.
Same with me- not that im really doing much tbh so no need for a reload if there is one.
Sorry guys, meant to check on it before I left this morning but was running behind. Will be 6 to 8 hours. Anybody else miss their turn because of this?

Can you see if your server can ping me? I think Im Uno on there since I reinstalled hamachi trying to figure this deal out. What a terrible support page they have. They have a game problems thread, but you go through all the suggestions, and it just ends! Not even a call the 800 number, which I spent 15 minutes of my time on to no avail.
From memory if you reinstall hamachi you have to rejoin the network. Something to do with that ip being stuck now.
Reloaded, there is 7:53 remaining on the turn.

Well by god it works sweet as soda pop. AI has ran around in circles in my vast swath of desert looks like.
I wonder if me having to reboot the PC had anything to do with it? I really have no clue why Hamachi wouldn't work for you. But now it seems that you're our resident Hamachi expert! Having read the entire website and called the 800 # and what not [:p]

Sorry for the short notice guys, but I've got to take the game down for the weekend. I'll have it back up in approximately 48 hours. I'm gonna be out of town for the weekend and my wife needs the computer out of the way. The painters are gonna come and paint grandma's room and my room, so they'll need to have stuffed pulled out of the way. Again, my apologies for the late notice.

I'm wondering, is there a way to speed up the turntimer for the first 2 weeks of a game to let's say 12hrs and put it back to 24 when the first barbs arrive?
you can change the turn timer mid game for sure. I already popped my goody hut, i got fission!
Sorry it's a boring game. I'd change the turn timer, but there's no way I'd make all my turns at 12 hours. I know Bodean has a pretty busy schedule as well and is probably toughing it out just to make 20 hour turns. Just floating the idea here to see what kind of responses I get, but what would you all think about a tearing down the game and starting a new one with different settings?
I dont mind so much but its up to everyone else- we could try advanced start with say 2000 gold or something like that. That'd bring us back to where we are now essentially.
I think that, if (at least!) 2 of you are bound to be slow, advanced start would help.

I think it is an OK game, Civ4 is actually boring and slow but once it gets going after 60-70 turns, it will get better. As all have noticed, I'm having a horrible start (dead last in score for the time being) but it is still OK, just slow going at the beginning. If the map would have been inspected before the start for overlaps or for two civs on one island, we could have started with 2 settlers, 3 warriors, worker and some gold but even if we did not, it still might be fine.

I'd like Matrix to be switched to AI effective immediately. :) As a recompense. Seriously, if KC cannot or does not want, we can try to seek a replacement. Otherwise, we should have played with AI from the very start.

Yes I had, since the game was restarted, yamachi shows green connexion, it showed teal before.

No hurry to do it... Got him pretty much surrounded and I will take him out when I feel like it. I am expanding and really dont feel like slaughting my units when I can wait another for another tech to make it easier.
Interesting tactic. I wonder whether you're not making it harder on yourself. He's gonna have a huge pile of archers by then.
Well that depends on what he means by surrounded. If he has a unit on every tile the city can work the AI wont be able to build much.
But then again this being robboo, it could well mean he lost his attacking force and has to start again

Every tile is covered....he can only whip and now since he is starved/whipped down to pop 2 He isnt getting much built Soon he will have his water tiles blockaded.

I am typically unit light, not so this time. And I dont even have the most "soldiers" in this game. So at least someone( or more) else must be hammer wasting also.

What is wrong with the terrain? The war must have started out warriors vs. Skirmishers for you so when you said I was dead I took your meaning as that, a number of skirmishers vs. a warrior.
nah it was axes vs archers.
I meant the map being water rich seemed to limit exploration unless where I am is the exception. And yeah I like my terrain except for a bit of desert.
I've got to say that there are two piss poor starting positions that I know of on this map. I got one of them, and my neighbor got the other. So those of you who have 4 or more cities already, don't be surprised when you come home and find that you've been booted from the game out of pure spite [:P]

I just noticed it this turn (hadn't look at the top cities for a while) but who built the pyramids, great library and great lighthouse all in one city[:o]. That is a hell of an achievement for the first 100 turns of the game.
I would guess Ian or barbu would be the most likely since they are leading the points but i am curious.
Probably the same person who's gnp is like 90 more than anyone else!

Looks like we're just waiting on Nitro and Rob. I believe Rob is gone for the weekend, so if no one has any major qualms then I'll just get it back up and running on Monday.
I am back and will patch before noon today. (4 hours from this post). I will email you Cody when I am patched.
I caught enough fish so the first fishing trip ended early. Still wont be here tomorrow due to another trip for a different type of fish but I can play when ever.
For some reason my "Check Updates" wouldn't work on my host computer. Anyways, I'm using a mirror download atm, so as soon as I finish that and we hear from Nitro we can get the game back up.

I'm patched as well...
Game is back up now. About 8 hours to play and most of you guys haven't played your turn. Ian, I'm pretty sure you need to play your turn again.
Updating now... internet outage here since before noon. IF i missed a turn its not a big deal. :)
Game seems to be down atm.
Game is up now, we had an electrical storm here last night and apparently something got blown....and it wasn't me :(
There's 3 hours + left on the turn, if anyone can't make it let me know.
I can get as far as connected to host but not into the game.
Sorry guys, I had some kind of pop up that froze the game. Back on now.
mauer emailed me via phone...cant access the web due to internet outage. He will get the game back up as soon as he is able.

Please leave the game after loading on pause so that everyone can move the turn. It is kind of important because of ongoing wars.
The game is back up now with 14 hours to play. Is this timing good for you akots? I can go in and pause it if it's not.

Just cause you don't have any more cities doesn't mean you have to quit.
For some reason, I cannot log into the game, BtS shuts down with a memory allocation error. Am I the only one experiencing this?
I can connect and play at RtWII PB without any problems. So, something might be wrong either with server or the latest game disposition which only the host can tell. :)
Still cannot connect, so please if possible, pause the game, this move is kind of important. I might try again in the morning and then again at lunchtime but by then, the turn might have been ended.
It stalls after downloading the save somewhere while trying to initialize and comes with runtime c++ error.
I just tried it & got the same error.
me too.. I can play other pitbosses. just not this one.
Well thats one way to win mauer.. stop everyone else from playing. :)
Only thing I can see is a Norton virus scan that ran. If someone can try to get in we'll see if it works. If it doesn't, then I'll just reload. Sorry fellas.
EDIT: I was able to get in fine after clearing that mess up. Let me know if there are more problems.

Well, there is a problem since me (and apparently others) was unable to actually move on a previous turn. Well, considering that BCLG is apparently not playing at all recently and IanDC also missed the turn, I can live with that unless somebody declared and razed Rome.

Well, there is a problem since me (and apparently others) was unable to actually move on a previous turn. Well, considering that BCLG is apparently not playing at all recently and IanDC also missed the turn, I can live with that unless somebody declared and razed Rome.
What turn did you miss? I've tried my best to keep the reloads up at the request of others. If anyone misses a turn because of my computer, connection, plumbing is out, car is broke down, or wife is snotty then just let me know and I'll reload. There should be NO problem.
Well, I've already played the next turn, so there is no point in reloading the game and hence the problem had dissipated on its own. I'm not sure about plumbing, cars, wives, and connections up at your place though, so cannot say anything meaningful on the matter.
I don't know what the problem was but it seemed that the turn end routine cleared it. I was able to get back in as soon as the turn ticked.
I just saw that on civstats guys. Ok, next time a reload is needed can someone that can make it clear what they want please post as much? Sorry, but I don't sit around looking at civstats and this forum 24-7 looking for who has and who hasn't been able to log in.

I still can't connect. My turns are not terribly important right now, so it's ok if I miss a turn. But I do have a problem... (not with other pitboss games)

Check Hamachi, Nitro. (Whether it's on and you're connected to the network.) I might've fiddled with it when I was at your place.
Just to check with everyone, i'll be without internet for a few weeks from next tuesday and Matrix has offered to take over for that time.
I don't think that i have met anyone matrix did before his demise so i can't see any issues with him having knowledge of things happening in my part of the world. But if you do have a problem speak now or hold your peace:D

Hamachi is on and I'm connected to the network. Is that sufficient? Because I still can't connect to the game.

According to a PM from Mauer, a thunderstorm rolled thru this morning and knocked out his internet connection so that may have been the issue, nitro.
Nitro PMed me and asked me to give him the boot until he figures this out. Just thought I'd let you guys know.
Nitro i can see you on hamachi if that helps but you time out when i attempt to ping you.

Well... I'm back. I think that McAfee prevents the ping from being answered. Thanks, Mauer, for putting me on AI. There was no damage done.
I'm not sure what the problem was, but it was of the kind: "your configuration has changed, please reinstall windows". Anyhow, removing crap from my pc, and reinstalling Civ4 and Hamachi worked.
Just a reminder Matrix will be taking over for me from the next turn for a while, until i get my new internet connected.
I should still be able to check in a couple times a week (when i can get to a friends house) so you can still send me any diplomatic messages, although its probably a good idea to send it to Matrix aswell.

No idea what's going on! It's plugged in, no thunderstorm, and no power outages!? The PC won't come on [:S] Don't have time to fiddle with it right now, but will try to work it out in a few hours.
I'm no expert, but I'd say I'm screwed. PC is plugged in, all cables in order, circuit breaker is fine.........PC won't come on though. Suggestions, comments or ideas are welcome.

Games back up guys. Not sure what was wrong with the power strip, but I just tried a different one and it worked.
Just FYI, Bodean will probably be missing his turns for a day or two, or three. He just called me and his wife was in a car accident. Broke several bones and seems ok, but is hospitalized atm. He'll have his hands full with work, the kids, and a hurt wife when she comes home, so be patient with him please. I'll ask him, when the moment seems ok, if he wants me to AI him.

I cannot connect to CDZ Game network since the network appears to be full (only 16 free members are allowed). I have only this state notebook to play since I'm now in San Antonio. Please, if mauer (who's probably an admin) can delete somebody who already finished playing and is not currently subbing. May be my other account can be deleted and then re-created upon my return. Or may be this is not possible at all. If not, then may be a new network might be created. This is actually a good idea with all Hamachi-based networks. Then, I should be able to join and to play. Otherwise, since I'll be gone for 4 more days, I think that would force me to abandon the game. Meanwhile, I'd ask the host to please pause the game until the issue is resolved.
Created another network. I tried to boot KC from the network, but it won't let me. Or I can't figure it out at least. I sent you the info in a PM akots.

Thanks, that worked out quite well albeit very slowly since second network on free Hamachi comes at 8 Kbps.
Cannot connect via new network, connection timed out every time for the past 2 hours. Still 3 hours to the end of turn. Please, asking again to pause the game. This will be second turn I'm going to miss. Some damage just cannot be repaired. I've set some build queues but workers are not automated and will presumably idle which is very sad.
i can't connect either, though this is with the normal network.
Unfortunately I can't sit by the computer 24 hours a day and make sure everyone can make their turns. If you miss your turn for a reason other than you just didn't feel like playing it then all you have to do is ask for a reload. Most days I can check this thread, or the PC itself, from 3PM-10PM CST.
However, after checking the PC I have discovered that both the uploader and the game itself are running uninhibited. It looks as though two people have been able to connect since akots last post. My only suggestion would be to try closing hamachi and then reopening. I have another pitboss game that I am in that I have found this solves the problem quite well.
So I'm asking you akots, would you like a reload?
I couldn't connect at about the same time as BCLG, there seemed to be something weird with Hamatchi then, I connected ok to 1 game but couldn't to 2.

Couldn't connect earlier today but now it worked fine.
I paused the game again after playing the turn.
Yeah i got in about an hour or so later, i figure it was a hamachi problem as i couldnt get into arboria yet could still ping the host.
I'm fine this time, played the turn finally and set the game back on pause since a few ppl did not move yet. I can live with one turn skipped, it is OK. :) Tomorrow I'm hopefully coming back home and would resume normal gameplay.

Edit: akots, could you do me the honour of unpausing? [please] I already have asked mauer and Matrix, and everybody seems to have a diplo screen.
I tried to, but I've got a diplo window up as well.

I'm having a lot of trouble with Hamachi. It's actually slower (extremely slow) to connect than to Matrix's game and I constantly get timeouts when trying to log on. It probably takes about 40 minutes for me to play my turn, 30-35 minutes of which are spent just trying to log on.
While in diplo screen, one can unpause by pressing the pause key on keyboard, should work.

That doesn't work. Both Nitro and myself tried this.
game seems to be buggered.
Is there anyone else that wants to host this game? If not then I don't know what we should do. I'm really getting frustrated with this.

what was the problem again? I was able to login fine.
If it were just one person then I'd tell them to bug off. But it seems that a number of people are having problems logging into the game most of the time that they try. To the point where some have been missing turns. That doesn't really turn out for a high quality competition, and if this continues maybe we should put a hold on the game until we can solve the problem or find another host.
Sorry ynnek, I had to reload since there were mulitiple people that weren't able to finish their turns.
