View Full Version : Random PBEM Challenge Full
Anyone interested in a one loss elimination playoff via PBEM? Obviously to limit time and drop outs there would be strict settings. Maybe limit to 3-4 games, possibly having 2-3 players per game, and on small or smaller maps. Random settings, random civs, no tech trading (AI optional) and let the chips fall where they may! Would just be for bragging rights of course, and not a true measure of skill under those circumstances. If anyone is interested in being involved just post here and I'll get a roster together if enough sign up.
Again, if you're interested post. If you want to shoot this down go away. We can argue about the settings once you've shown interest.

A pyramidal 1-loss-out tournament would be fun. And I need my virgin ass to be punctured at one point by the Civ4 dagger - notice I'm not really counting the civivor one just yet, mainly because I keep forgetting to play those pitboss turns and Whomp (who does it really well, both keeping track and playing) has the ungrateful job of covering up for me in there.

If there are two more that would like to get involved then they can pair up. I think more than that would be too much to track. feel free to create the save yourself. Just remember to have it all random except the map size and difficulty setting. I'm guessing noble is good for all. AI is optional. Remember this is for fun, and mostly intended to show you all that I'm the king :D
Just post here once the game has started.
Oh, and tech trading off as well.
Isn't romeo restricted to vanilla and warlords though?

Everyone probably has warlords as well I'd assume. Either way, BCLG has warlords so they can play on that.

My game with BC would not necessarily follow the proscribed rules here: 4 variations
1) 1-3 levels above par (Noble)
2) Continents with 2 pet AI each, small islands are allowed
3) Opponent selects a group of 3 leaders for you to select from
4) Fight to the death with flamethrowers at 10 paces

I'd even be fine with someone making one map for all 4 matches. But that would mean I wouldn't be allowed to read other spoilers.
Just go ahead and make the map yourself. It's easier that way and much more random.
I suggest one of the first round losers make a map for the finals, but then random all the way is fine with me.

AFAICS I can't start warlords when having vanilla and bts. So that would mean vanilla.
As I haven't started a PBEM yet (others did that for me) that is new for me, but I can do that hopefully today.

Here's the bracket formation btw. Just a suggestion here, but what would you guys think about speeding this up by adding an incentive? I know it just started, but I was thinking maybe the first winner from each bracket gets to pick his civ for the next game? Just an incentive to finish faster is all, thoughts?
EDIT: My bracket looks terrible, can someone make a nice and pretty one?

Deal (First winner picks civ). I am the equivalent of PRINCETON, due obviously to my superior intelligence, not my lack of offense. (In reference to Grahamiams barb on the pool).
I would actually seed myself as #6 in this turney, and betting is welcome, as I can set some lines, and take my vig on the action.
I'd say ynnek or mauer is number one seeing as they've won a pitboss.
admitedly i was smacking down on ynnek in our pbem and ID, oh and i beat cody. Still though, pitboss :D

I am having trouble opening the save. It says that it is protected, but I just did a fresh uninstall, reinstall of c4, patch and download the latest directX.
Thoughts?
I'd seed myself just below mauer to add insult to injury when he loses.

I did another uninstall and full install bringing the total to 3.
This time however, I also uninstalled Xfire, so maybe that was somehow corrupting my mod folder, etc.

I uninstalled again, moved the folder Firaxis and all its contents to the Recycle bin, emptied it, then reinstalled. Still not working.
I did find what may have been the culprit. I played a Civ 4 SG with TmC and Bezhokov and someone else with the Turks mod. I think I got all traces, but it still is giving me crap. Can we play an "open" save, and play on our honor? I will have all the saves availible for viewing if someone wishes to audit, etc.
I am growing quite frustrated here.

Yeah, I'd be fine with an open save(as I will be doing spoilers anyway and therefore have to trust that you don't read it). The password just helps to avoid someone opening the wrong save by chance.

Ynnek, I plan on trying to have detailed spoilers as well. It should be pretty obvious to everyone that I am not really a computer guy. As one of my favorite lines from the great American comic Bloom County goes,
"I find this man innocent, he doesn't have the brains to pick his nose much less operate a computer."
This might sound obvious- you are both attempting to play the save on the same game right? ynnek vanilla romeo vanilla?
Also instead of zipping the save, try just sending it to each others email address.
thirdly i spose romeo could try creating it, its really easy to do.

I wouldn't even know where to begin at sorting out the odds. Remember this poll is amazingly UNSCIENTIFIC, and was perception based ONLY. Finish your games & settle the matter ;)

He's already razed one of my cities. So I'd say it's a combination of Beorn being under rated, and myself being over rated.
Somebody needs to make some kind of "prize" for the win also. Maybe the winner gets a night out with EM?

Btw, if it's any consolation to these guys who are trying to hold back from falling into the whole "Beorn is doubleplusgood and underrated" Mauer propaganda, my vulture barely made it through the forest since he had a woods 2 promotion - which mauer failed to notice in time - and the city was defended by a sorry little lonely spear. Meanwhile, he had time to destroy the strongest empire in the game while on my end I almost lost everything trying to capture a barbarian city.
Oh, and game 2 is at 250 BC or so. That is, Game #2. Move along! [:p]
Actually, the city was defended by two axes and a spear. I just moved the axes out to "block" a woods 2...sheesh. Oh, and EM is the one day to be "Mrs. BCLG". You know she's got no standards if she's dating island boy.
Or it shows just how low the standard of island boys is :D
me and barbu are getting there slowly but surely- i think barbu having a life and the different timezones- coupled with my inability to notice a turn is in the inbox is leading to the slow pace- we've found each other now though!

I havent had my computer for three days thanks to moving back home for christmas, should be one there shortly.

We may schedule a power session during Chrismas break. I'm not working the 25 trough jan 3rd.
Im away from the saturday before new years till the thursday but anytime before then im free. pretty much anyways.

Yeah for me! Why dont we do the next round online turn based or something. Set aside a couple hours at a time will probably go faster.

Me and KC tried a pbem once, dont think we got past turn 10 tbh.
