We were enjoy the current earth map so much we started another one before we had even finished:D

The obvious difference is that it is now in BtS. But we also tinkered with the map a bit more to even out the starts and we are also up to 14 players. Tech Trading remains off.

Matrix - Aztecs - Montazuma
akots - India - Asoka
Beam - Khmer - Suryavarman II
BCLG100 - China - Qin
grahamiam - Egypt - Ramesses II
socralynnek - Zulus - Shaka
Robboo - Maya - Pacal II
Dandridge - Russia - Cathy
Robi D - Rome - Julius Ceasar
nitro1974 - Native Americans - Sitting Bull
IanDC - Mali - Mansa Musa
Darkness - Vikings - Ragnar
NHJ - Inca - Huayna Capac
killercane - Mongolia - Genghis Khan

As you can see BCLG and myself did a direct swap[lol]. Although we both have extra nations around us to deal with.

Also like kast time we get a bit of an accellerated start with 2 settlers, 2 warriors and a worker. In case you didn't know what Italy looks like here the the opening screenshot

Got my second city up and running where my iron will be. Haven't run into anyone else yet. My worker is just sitting around because he has nothing to do for the moment.

I'll be looking to get a third city going up in France when i can. Hopefully i can do a few deals for peace then grab as much land as possible.

Don't forget to settle Carthage before Egypt does.

I'll have to see about that. First priority is keeping northern europe out of viking hands.

Not too much going on just yet. My worker has run out of things to do for the moment. I'll have my settler ready in a couple of turns to go up to france for my third city.

I also met Dandridge. I'm hoping we can get some sort of peace deal. If i learned anything from the 1st game its early peace is a key to a fast start.

I sent Dandridge a message just to say hi and ask if he was interested in a peace deal for this first part of the game.

I got the reply back which i don't really know what to make of. I split up the conditions he requested for ease of reading

quote:Hi Robi D of the Romans,

I'm very interested in a long term peace agreement with you. The fact that you'll have the famous Roman Pretorians at your disposal quite early in the game however preconceives some special conditions to this agreement.

1-I must be able to scout inside your territory when open borders are possible.

2-You must not move any Pretorians near my border or stock them in large amounts.

3-If you build pretorians I must know who you are going to attack with them(my emphasis), since they are not defensive units.

All this is required since I know how people usually make use of Pretorians. If you agree these terms I'm ready for a peace treaty that last at least untill 1000 AD. I'm also interested in making military co-operation with you.
DanDRidge of the Russia

Point 1 is not an issue for me as long as i have the same rights

Point 2 sounds a bit ridculous to me. If we have a peace deal why would i stockpile any units at his border, and even if i did it wouldn't make a difference since we would be at peace.

Point 3 i highlighted. I really don't see why this would be his buisness. There is no way i would want anyone to know if i'm planning an attack on someone. Should i tell him my strategy too.

I feel this an attempt to be controlling of me, make me a quasi vassel to him. I'll send a reply basically to say point 1 is fine as long as i have the same right but point 3 is not acceptable.

What i want to know is what you guys think. Am i overreacting, is he being reasonable in the circumstances. Also do you think this is a genuine offer or has he already decided i have to go and this is just a ploy to get me involved in dragged out talks while he sets up his attack. I'd like to know everyones 2 cents:)

He doesn't trust you, that's all. Anyone would be nervous if he's living next to someone stocking up praetorians.

Robi D
20-11-2007, 09:03
Yes but by 1000AD he should have crossbows and maces available so pretorians shouldn't be such a big issue. Plus i had offered the possibility of a deal longer then 1000AD. Anyway i guess i'll see from his next reply if he is serious about a treaty.

Its been a while since the last update. DanDridge and myself were able to come to an agreement. There was a couple more PM back and forth but we got the details sorted. The deal is to 1000AD and i wont be reprting any preatorians i build to him. He was pushing for an attack against Darkness (Vikings) which i wasn't keen on myself since a war this early is very draining on resources. However that issue was decided when akots tried and opportunist attack on dan so his busy dealing with India now.

I met killercane next, he had sent a scout from far away mongolia for a bit of a walk. Not much to discuss since we are nowhere near each other. Then in the last few turns i ran into Darkness and IanDC on the same turn. Darkness seem happy to stay peaceful but no formal agreements were discussed and the conversation with IanDC was a basic hello, nice to meet you thing.

At home things are moving a little too slow for my liking. The GNP definately needs some work to get the tech rate moving. I'll have my 4th city soon which will close off access to europe once culture expands the borders. I'm also in desperate need of some happiness otherwise my cities wont be growing much more

Thing are slowly moving forwards. I've met akots and grahamiam in the last couple of turns. Building on our good relationship from CDZ earth 1, akots and i signed a deal to 1000AD. If i can get one from darkness too then i can focus on filling up europe.

At the moment my economy is 3 versions of shite. 10 out of 14 is not that good. Otherwise the demographics are ok. My major problem is my cities are at their happiness limit so i'm really sweating on getting writing (due next turn). That way i can build libraries and expand those borders to get the gems.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1717/rom1800b1gu0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Also having had a look around i've set my strategy for the game. With my cities not able to grow and my economy low anyway, i'll follow my China strategy from CDZ Earth 1 for the early part and fill out europe quickly. Also given that i'm looking like winning the game the chance of me facing a multi-national dogpile are pretty high, so i'm going to lower those chances. If i can secure peace a peace deal from darkness, then its africa here i come. Total control of the continent would be the goal. After that, it will really depend on what deals i have in place, but my target will be either the rest of europe, central asia or south america. Either way i figure to win i wont be able to be peaceful so it will be a matter of conquest after conquest.

A while since the last update. I now have deals with Darkness, DanDridge and akots. So i'm safe for the time being from any attack from the north and east. To get a deal from Darkness i did have to give up settlement of the British Isles, however that is not a huge loss because he already has boats sailing around there and would have beaten me anyway.

My main issue remains a lack of happiness. I will get Gems in the next 10 turns which will help a little. My 6th city was founded this turn so only 2 more left for the continent to be filled.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/8711/rom1160b1wm8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

With peace stitched up and my lack of happiness Grahamiam has become a logical target for conquest in the near future. He has a religion which would help me a lot plus he control the vital crossroads between europe-africa-mid east.

The demographics are still looking ordinary.

Thanks for the update..grahamiam..is egypt correct?

Wow you gave up a city for peace..i guess it would have been hard to defend a remote location of you empire. Thats a nice peace of hard diplomacy from Darkness.

Robi D
10-01-2008, 08:45
Yes Grahamiam is egypt. I didn't give up a city, but a future city location in england. Given darkness already has boats sailing around he would have more than likely beaten me there anyway. So my feeling was its better to take some pain and give it up and secure peace so i can focus on africa.

Things are moving alomg nicely. While i'm building up the military i'm doing a bit of exploring. I have a galley just leaving the mediterranean bound for north america (via briton, iceland, greenland) my scout has been heading to asia. I'm i bit surprised how far killercane has settled westward. He has been helped by dandridge being occupied by darkness and akots attacking him
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/3739/rom0800b1sj7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Closer to home, i've settled my 8 and final european city. More to follow elsewhere hopefully.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2759/rom0800b2ys7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Demographics are starting to pick up. Had a few more libraries built so i'm able to run some specialist.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9066/rom0800b3wm4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I'm thinking it will be easier to attack egypt via the sea first. His city in the east is the holy city judging by the borders. Taking his african cities first should be a bit more of a surprise. From there i can attack his eastern city from either africa or europe.

Things are starting to move along. My cities are starting to come up to speed. Just like Simon in the first game i'm finding Europe is a bit low on production. Commerce and Food are fine but i don't really need 3 potential GP farms. I'm thinking with Maoi statues in Zvezda that can be high production city along with Zeljezo. Still i'm going to need more than 2 so i'm going to have to go hunting for some more.

Here is the West half

The Demographics
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/7930/rom0325b3ly5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Further afield everyone seems to have caught the war bug. There is quite a free for all developing in Asia which i'm happy about, should buy me some more time to get up to speed. With my deal with Darkness my only concern is Africa for now.

My boats nearly made it to the Americas, i've already met Matrix and Nitro sailing the other way so there isn't many civs left to meet

Zito would've caught 2 more hills if it were 1E, along with keeping the seafood and wheat. Any reason to put it there? Overlap?

Robi D
25-02-2008, 06:53
The long answer is i had it in mind for a GP farm, so i was looking to minimise the overlap, however i didn't realise both those forest were on hills until after i'd put the cities down. Had i seen it i would have moved the placement on Zito and Konjic 1E and Vino 1N.

The short answer stupidity

Again some time has passed since the last update. While not much has happened in the physical sense, there is a lot of tension brewing.

First off my exploration of the globe is progressing nicely. Hopefully i can score the navigation bonus although i do have a few competitors
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/7294/rom0250a1xj4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Closer to home my cities are finally on the productive side. I'm able to touch 80% research. Even my production is looking half decent. Continental Europe is firmly in my hands. Also i was able to build the colossus in Zvezda so the extra commerce from the sea will help my economy along.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1525/rom0250a2vl6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

With tensions starting to simmer my main focus now is on military matters. Darkness is very unwilling to extend our peace deal any further. he seems to think that there isn't room for both of us to have a shot at winning. So a build up has begun. I am on track to be one of the first with feudalism. Also killercane has launched an attack on Grahamiam. While i would love to get in there and take a few cities i have to keep Darkness in mind. Rostov though is an easy target. As you can see it mainly military techs in the research queue.
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/9758/rom0250a3av1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Demographics still are not brilliant but i'm slowly creeping up the ladder.
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/7941/rom0250a4wk2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Finally having everyone under observation gives me a good look at the situation. On the GNP side of things IanDC has jumped ahead of the pack. Personally i think he is peaking early due to his financial trait and lots of flood plains. To keep it up he is going to have to get his hands dirty in Africa or he wont be going much further.

I moved in on grahamiams northern cities. I took Rostov without a fight. He did have an axe there but he is moving him back to Alexandria where he has a spear and some catapults.
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/1153/rom0450a1qs7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Also i was able to extend the deal with Darkness to 1500AD so i don't have to worry about any problems with him for a while

Now for those of you who missed the "chat" in the open thread (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4868&whichpage=8)(page 8, post 35 onwards) this screenshot will look a little odd.

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6859/rom0540a1ee0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

How Darkness came about getting Alexandria when my units were right outside the city is because Grahamiam gifted it to him. Needless to say i was annoyed. Gifting a city under threat to a third party is not a proper thing to do, much like DM's. Although most didn't have a problem with it when it went to a poll.

Now as annoyed as i was, i was not as pissed off as i made out to be. You see while i believe the whole gifting thing is not right, i didn't really give a shit about Alexandria. I would have much rather had my units jumping ahead of killercane and taking the very strategic suez city, but since Darkness delayed on extending the peace deal i couldn't afford to have the bulk of my army that far away.

Why i acted so pissed off was simply a case of shaking the tree to see what would fall out.In creating a mini crisis i was hoping it might just bring out something into the open. To that extent it worked pretty well. With all the talk back and forth in the open thread and PM's Matrix revealed that the 3 American civs were cooperating and looking to make a join effort to expand on another continent, in paticular IanDC in Africa. I also learnt from killercane that he was going to stay netural in the akots-BCLG war and that he was hoping they would continue fighting for a long time to come, and akots and BCLG both came looking for support from me.

Overall i was happy with the result of the exercise. Also with killercane now getting into Africa i figure there is no point continuing fighting Grahamiam since there wont be much left for me, but i do hope to get some gold out of him.

Also here is the city screen, as you can see plenty of room for population growth.

This game continues to throw up new developments with just about every turn. More on that later, first off a look at my nation.
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/5624/rom0700a1nz6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/2136/rom0700a2yr5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Things are going along nicely but it could be better. My main concern is that i don't have many high production cities, which makes it hard to get the infrasturcture built that i need to keep pace research wise while having the time for military builds. On that front i considering building a city just north of the alps to take advantage of some hills and take some pressure off low production cities.

As for the rest of the world here is a look at the relations screen
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5537/rom0700a3em5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

A bit of a surprise in that Ian went to war with Killercane, for me it would have made sense to pick up grahamiams last couple of cites then have a go at KC but he has backed in grahamiam. KC has asked for help with Ian, which i am not against giving in principle but Ian has been pumping out the troops and does have a tech edge. Also he has plenty of eyes on me so any attack would not have an element of surprise. So i really don't see an easy war and being slightly behind makes it difficult to take a risk and plunge into a war in the hope of it going better than expected. Although i know KC is working on getting ynnek to join in, if thats the case then that changes the odds.

Further afield Simon has been trying to get me to attack akots. It would seem KC has dropped his neturality after akots offered him a deal. Aside from me having a peace treaty with akots since Darkness cut me off in Alexandria i don't have direct contact with Asia so i'm not feeling that interested in jumping in there directly, but might offer indirect support.

On the plus side my relations in the Americas are all positive and i'm getting some good trade routes out of it along with some handy resources.

I'll finish up with the standard demographics shot.

Not much has changed over the past few turns so this wont be a big post. I settled Centralna so i have my 10th city now. It will basically be there for a little more production since i'm lacking in that aera. It will only get up to a size 5 or 6 so its main focus will be building troops.

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/7269/rom0980a1fd1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Ian helped Grahamiam get his old capital back. Again i'm not sure of the benifit in giving it to graham rather than keeping it for himself. But Graham is now a defacto vassel of Ians so i'm sure he will be looking for ways to get his investment back.

Also the Med is becoming quite busy with all the ships being built. Ian is looking to deter me and i'm looking to be undetered.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5595/rom0980a2ga1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Finally it seems my good relations in the Americas are paying off. Matrix is on board with a plan to attack Ian. He is researching Astronomy now so it will be a few more turns before anything happens but plans are at least underway

Robi D

The face of the game is about to change in three turns time. If successful the pecking order will change.

To accomplish this i had to kick off my first GA, timing was essential so i had to start it now. Here is a look at the nation and the demographics
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/4724/rom1100a1pc4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/6858/rom1100a2oz1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Now to the attack. IanDC has been leading for a while and has recently been pushing Killercane back into Asia. He is 2-3 techs clear of everyone and about 5 in front of me. I had offered to do a treaty a while back and some of the inital talks were positive but in the end it didn't pan out, something i'm hoping to make him regret.

I rushed Astronomy to get galleons, which means i lose the effects of the colossus. But it does mean i can launch a twin attack on IanDC cities of Gao and Tadmekka. This isn't a capture but a razing mission since there is no hope of holding them.

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/7291/rom1100a3gi9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

There is one more surprise. While Ian might suspect i might be coming he might not be counting on Matrix sailing across to knock out his number one city Djenne. If we are successful Ian would have lost 1/3 of his cities in one turn. Fingers crossed

Been a bit busy so this updates running behind.

Matrix was successful in taking out Djenne, which is a big blow to Ian since it was his top city. Myself on the other hand was not so successful.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and really i guess taking two cities was a bit to much. Had i focused on one i would have got it. Live and learn i guess.

I got close to snaching Gao but needed a little more luck
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2820/rom1140a1hx6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/4025/rom1150a2iw5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

For now i'll have to wait since Ians building Frigates. I'll have a bigger update soon

Robi D
05-05-2008, 14:33
1200 AD

After my failed attempt at taking Gao and Tadmekka Ian Has me on the back foot. As you can see he has his Frigates parked outside my capital. The are 5 of them hanging around the Med at the moment, no galleons as yet, Mtrix is still keeping him busy further south.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/7180/rom1200a1gb3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

That said i have Chemistry now and i i'm quickly working on getting some Frigates of my own. I upgrade a Caravel and will upgrade another one in the next few turns plus i have some builds going. The way i see it at the moment is that unless Matrix can do some more damage soon, i don't have much chance at beating Ian but i can at match his navy then there is a chance of getting a ceasefire and some sort of peace deal. With him losing Djenne his lead has gone so i doubt he would want a grinding war either at this point.

My nation is going well, i am about 4 cities shy of what i need to be in contention for a win, particularly on the production side of things. Apart from Zvezda, Zeljezo it a struggle to get anythiong built in a decent amount of time and with the war i'm having to hold off on some key infrastructure.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7437/rom1200a2ta1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2177/rom1200a4tv3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And with that i'm middle of the road as far as the demographics go. My chance of expansion are limited since both Ian and Darkness are stronger and Grahamiam is protected by Ian. So it looks like i'll be relying on outside influences to tip the balance

Well i'm firmly on the backfoot and in danger of losing my capital. Ian has gotten together a major fleet, 7 frigates and 4 galleon which are filled with cannons and rifles. I have 5 frigates and 4 galleon on my side to try and halt his attempt.

My one hope is i just got military science so i'vee stopped research for now and am saving up to upgrade my pikes, maces and whatever else i can to grenadiers. Also gives me the chance to build ships-of-the-line.

This has me a little confused. I did offer a ceasefire which was before the last update but his response was to the negative, but now he hasn't followed through. Had he reenforced i was dead. We are a couple of turns from a second attack on Ian's defences. This time Matrix is bring help from his friends in the Americas.

First off a look at my lands. Mainly military builds and those are mainly for the navy which is a change from the usual land wars. As i mentioned earlier production is a problem for me. I don’t have the time to build much need infrastructure which has been available for a while so i’m falling behind on GNP. On the plus side i’m not dead last either.

One area i’m still a leader in is espionage. Over the last few turns i’ve been able to spy enough on Ian to get a view of all his cities. He is fairly spread out. One part of the reason is that yyenk has been building his Zulu forces on Mali’s southern borders so he might be joining in the fray too at some stage.

Closer to home and there is a naval stand off at Tadmekka. Ian can build SoL’s (ship of the line) too but i have more so i’m keeping a slight edge. This means his ships are pinned down in Tadmekka. The problem for both of us is simple, i don’t have the army to take Tadmekka while he doesn’t have the navy to get his army across to attack me. For whatever reason he has be unwilling to go the long way and come up through Turkey.

My situation is now problematic. While a pan American attack will help break though Ian’s defences i’m not sure having the American cartel on my doorstep is exactly the best thing either. There is a possibility to team up with yynek to keep their influence in check but our diplomatic contact has been minimal so far.

However this might not be my problem for much longer. Darkness who has been flying through the techs recently, and has by far the largest GNP (see demo screen pic below) has told me he wont be renewing our peace treaty. The current one ends 1500AD. While he does not have the troops at the moment i am in no doubt he could upgrade/build an army to take me out without too much of a sweat, especially if i’m still bogged down in Africa. The irony of the fact that i got involved in attacking Ian in the first place because he was getting ahead in techs is not lost on me.

At least for those who are reading this i can provide the most comprehensive insight into the game. Like i said espionage is one area i’m ahead in. Save for Darkness (due to our agreement) i can see everyones research. I’m sure there is a few more twists and turn to navigate yet in this game. Hopefully there is one to help me.

I don't really know what happened with the attack planned by Matrix since i did not see anything, maybe Ian sunk some ships or something i don't know yet.

Anyway what ever did transpire has given Ian the confidence to make a move. Once again he has landed troops near Mermerna. From my point of view its a case of now or never for me. My agreement with Darkness is about to run out so this is my one shot at dealing a blow to Ian. Tadmekka is exposed now as are all his ships.

It is not possible to tell from your picture, how many forces are beseiging Memerna, how many are defending Tademeka, or how many ships are exposed.

Anyway good luck with that.

It sounds as if you have not tried to contact Matrix, or, if you did, did he not respond?

I did contact Matrix. Nitro and yyenk had second thoughts so the attack was called off.

The size of the forces was about equal but with his great firepower i couldn't hold on for long. He still has most of his troops so i'm pretty much dead. Just a matter of time now.

Still i'm sure i can give Ian one or two nasty surprises.

Well the end came very quickly. I had nothing left to fight off Ian and Darkness after Ians connons had minced up most of my units. I lost my last 5 cities in 2 or 3 turns. Here is the last screenshot i managed to grab before the end

On reflection my biggest, most costly mistake was right at the start. I raced Darkness and DanDridge to settle norther europe first. This left me with a lot of cities that were good for commerece but woeful for production. I really should have been racing Ian to settle northern africa, were i could have gained a couple of good production cities.

As it was my poor production gave me one headache after another as i could never build infrastructure quick enough to get its effects which left no time for unit build. To build the units i needed meant the infrasturcture was delayed so i was always struggling to keep up.

I still had fun and would play an earth map game again, because for whatever reason they do make very interesting ones.

thanks for the spoiler...go and read Matix's now and you might find out what went wrong...although i doubt his secret non-agression pact with IanDC was gonna make much of a difference, as Darkness might have been upon you a bit quicker otherwise.

What went wrong is i was always a day late and a dollar short. If the other had followed through with their attack on Ian i'm sure we would have taken a couple of more cities off him. In the end i would have still lost out to Darkness, by this point he was well ahead of me in techs anyway
