I am Kublia Kahn of the Mongols. Didn't end up taking this over until about 10 turns or so into it.

As you can see, I got a really crappy start. Alot of tundra and alot of ice.

This is the land mass I'm on. It's only whiplash and myself. As you can see, I'm rather blocked. He's got the fertile land and the choke on me.

So I built military, as it seemed my only option. Once I got to this point........

....I was left with no other option, but to attack. I sent him the following message:
Well hello there,

I'm sure the next time you log in that you'll see that my traveling band of miscreants is not on a friendly diplomatic journey. I sincerely apologize for having to do this, but I'm am fantastically sure of the fact that if you were in my starting position you would find that this would be the only plausible way to advance the Mongol civilization. I'm not sure how you play, but either way I will not be making double moves on you. I wish you good luck regardless of the way this ends.

Mauer

to which he responded:
Early war hurts us both; better to ally any tech trade.

and I responded:
I'm truly sorry, but I do not believe that I would benefit in anyway with the current setup.

I really am not a warmonger, and I actually do believe if we worked together it would be beneficial. Except for the simple fact that I'm in such a crap position with no room for improvement. I'd have a minimal presence in the game if I continued w/o attempting to expand his direction.

Not sure what he's been building, but it ain't units. Popped my wandering warrior on a hill, and right across the valley I see his city guarded by an axe and a warrior. He's got walls and the city is at 60%, but I'm sure I have enough. I need to pop off his copper along the way just in case though.

Looks like he is in trouble...

mauer

I'm pretty sure there's a second copper connected that's 6 north and 1 west of my stack in that picture. He's got 5 cities compared to my two, which would explain his size 3 capital. I'm actually on the forest tile SW of his capital right now. Had to kill an axe at the loss of one. Next turn he'll have 4 axes in the city and maybe another if he whips/builds another. Will be alot tougher than my first scouting expedition initially showed. I do have a steady flow of units headed that way though as I'm building one/turn from my 3 cities. Will update with pics once the city falls or my stack does.

mauer

Took the city, and it only has 3 turns of revolt. The losses were pretty even, even with his city fortify, walls and culture. Bad thing though is that his MFG is much higher than mine. On the other hand, he's still got a good ways to come before catching up to my military size. So I'm not fearful of a counter attack, just concerned about my ability to continue, especially if that other copper is hooked up.

Probably should have gone with Whomp's suggestion and held of untill catapults, but he may have built up his army by that time. He was probably just expanding at the time, which I probably would have done if I had the land for it. I think I'll heal these units and then head NW to the copper site.

Just realized that Whipapolis holds stonehenge. Would explain his lack of units. Also, the city due east of Whipapolis is pop 7 and guarded by a single warrior. Dispatched an archer and 2 axes that way just in case he's able to get another unit there by the time I get there.

Why don't you have a spearman in that stack?

mauer
19-10-2007, 10:33
There are 2 spearmen a half step behind. I know, I know....I should have learned my lesson. But come on, whiplash is no shabba right? :D

Shabbaman

Didn't see the spears. Also, he appears not to have horsies. I like chariots ;)

War update. He's almost dead. His capital is undefended as you can see, and his other city doesn't have copper connected. Once this is over I could use suggestions as to which way to go. Libraries and markets would be amazing I'd suppose. So I need Currency and Alphabet. 2 turns until construction is done, and alphabet is cheaper than currency so I'll go that way first. I'd also like to get literature and chop out the great library. Thoughts? Also, I'm guessing that getting contact ASAP would be good so I could get some tech trading going.

Libs and cottages would be my plan. That way you can race to caravels and make new friends.
Nice work on wiping him out!

mauer
22-10-2007, 03:53
yeah, I started libraries everywhere except my capital and am gonna push workers out of it for now.

BTW Whomp, you run your optimal lineup for the day and you score 176.

Forgot screenies as usual. Nonetheless, Whiplash has been eliminated. Total of 8 cities now, 3 of them I settled. Will be in better shape as soon as they stop rioting and can work some cottaged tiles. Also, I started on my path to some naval units. Held off on Alphabet and currency to do so. I at least want to get some galleys out looking and then I'll shoot at alpha in the hopes of finding someone to trade with.

It might be worthwhile moving your capital to a more central location in the future.

mauer
24-10-2007, 16:10
Will probably do that once the pop gets up a bit in Whipapolis (now Reaganopolis). Apparently Whiplash is one of those that gets upset when attacked. He posted a politically correct "Mauer's a stupid idiot" comment in the main thread.

You should PM him and link this thread so he can see the options you had. Or maybe not. Anyways, you did the right thing [goodjob]

Logged in and all looked well Robi. Your city suggestion looks pretty good too, and I'd imagine after the library in Reaganopolis I'll start a palace there.

When I logged in I had produced a great scientist.
My options were:
1. Alphabet for free
2. the university thingy
3. Golden age

Normally I would have gone with alpha for free. However, having 8 cities is only allowing me 10% research rate w/o losing money. So I select Currency, pop a 6 turn GA, and turn currency from a 27 turn ordeal into a 6 turn jog. That'll be just enough time, and leave me just enough money to maybe whip some markets and get my economy up and running properly. May be a bad move, but I thought I'd try it.

There is no tech trading in the game so there is no rush to find everyone else. Main thing is getting all the cities up and running and securing the rest of the island for yourself. Wouldn't worry about whiplash too much.

mauer
27-10-2007, 02:43
Bah, I just realized that tech trading was off....lol, what a loser

EDIT: and it's even in my OP [uglyham]

Been awhile, and things are going along fine, except for the part about Onan. It seems to be smooth sailing for him towards a cultural victory. Not sure why those around him aren't handling the situation though [???]

Here's my new core. Just switched over to Bureaucracy, thus the anarchy. As you can see I have absolutely ZERO happiness resources. So I've had to build colosseums in all my cities. Whiplash's former capital is now my new capital and trying to farm it up.

Here's my old core. You can see why I pretty much had to take on Whiplash. Kingsland will be a good city, but you can have a shot at the game with only one good city. If I had a religion or some lux's the cities could have a larger pop.

I've met DanDridge to my East (America). We agreed that he could have that city spot there, and the desert would be a demilitarized neutral zone. Also, he's waay ahead of me in tech, GNP, and everthing else. I think he's #2 in score, behind Onan. He's looking to make an agreement with others to put a halt to Onan. Which would be good for me. Onan might go down, and war might slow down DanDridge and give me a chance to get back in the game. He said there's a bunch of civs on his continent and Onan is to his east. So I've got some galleys and units headed that way to make contact.

Here's TestofTime (Germany). His score is about the same as mine, but he has no metals. I've thought about going to whoop up on him, but have been focusing on economy.

Speaking of economy, you can see how mine has risen a good deal with markets and courthouses, but you can also see how far behind I am as well

Why are you not running HR? Then the size of your cities are only limited by the number of units you have. You can then run some Merchants and/or Scientist (maybe using Caste as well to maximize) to help pay for the units + maximize research. Setup one or 2 cities to build units, then let the rest be specialists or cottage cities.

mauer
05-12-2007, 20:40
Bah, I am running HR. You know I forgot it was one happy per. Was thinking it was limited to two units.

Robi D
05-12-2007, 21:06
You should check out that island NW of kingland, it could have some happiness resources that you can grab easily.

Civ3....isn't HR in Civ3 2 per? Maybe I was having flashbacks or something.

Biggest inequality in this game is in the pictures below. Notice the distribution of luxuries.

Also thought I'd post this now that I'm out of anarchy...although it hasn't changed much...lol Crop yields and population are steadily rising and my GNP has jumped quite a bit, but I'm still waaaaay behind on that.

Gonna start building galley's, maces and catapults as much as I can and maybe work a hit on Onan just because no one else is doing it. I may not be able to do much, but once Dan sees somebody taking action he might join in and possibly be able to persuade others to join.

mauer
12-12-2007, 18:20
Also, alphabet can be researched in two turns, so all my espionage is going towards Dan and I'm gonna try and steal some techs when I have the chance.

killercane
12-12-2007, 18:43
You need espionage multipliers. If you have courthouses, start running spy specialists. Thats really the best way to get back in the tech game. Whats your current tech tree look like and the tech trading screen (I know trading is off but to see how far ahead the others are)?

mauer
12-12-2007, 18:52
I'm down quite a few techs, but they're mostly 1-3 turn techs. So I'll eventually be down some big techs, but should catch up to the others fairly quick. I've got courthouses in most of my cities also. Although with a GNP over 1,000 (I'm assuming Onan), this game could get uglier than it already is fast.

Beorn
18-01-2008, 05:13
Onan just triggered the emancipation switch as I was looking at your turn. This means we'll have to do it soon too, happy faces being an issue.

He's bracing for war on several fronts so now is the time for some extreme reforms if you ask me. Eyes are not on you whatsoever and you have the kind of size that you need to come back into the game.

You were running pacifism out of a no-state religion empire that has 3 towns with a religion at all. I switched to org religion in order to make missionaries, spread religions and be able to get a lot of free religion happy's soon. You can switch to Emancipation whenever you are able to (I'd wait a moment for free speech), then when you hit free market you'll probably have enough religions spread to go back to free religion along the same revolt.

If you plan on controlling the western tip of the silver island, I'd strongly suggest FP in Cologne: further away but much faster built and will help out even more down there. Otherwise, Pyramid city is good.

I'd keep building infra: you are creative so happy gas buildings shouldn't be a problem.

mauer
22-01-2008, 02:05
All looks well and thanks for subbing Beorn. Why did you switch to universal suffrage though? I'm not bringing in enough money to rush buy anything. I thought you were going to switch to representation so I could benefit from the beakers. Also, being out of HR and pacifism, I'd almost rather be in slavery than caste. Again, I'm no civ expert so if I'm missing something please point it out.

Hmm, I seriosuly forgot about updating this spoiler. It's even been over for like a couple weeks as well. Anyways, a brief recap:
-I ended up with all of ToT's cities (Germany), which was those two islands to my west.
-ended up 4th scorewise
-Onan won a cultural victory

Not a whole lot to say about the game because I was never in a position to win it. Terrible start, no contact with anyone but Dan for a very very long time. This game generally sucked for me, but I still think I did quite well given the circumstances. Still lost though, so whatever.
