I am Justinian of the Byzantines (Spi/Imp). Imp gives me cheap settlers, which with the gold and copper by the capital means very fast expansion.

Socralynnek is to my south. We had a deal to trade techs, with him doing the Oracle and taking Feudalism. However I now see that tech trading is off for this game (doh!). This kind of delays our plans. However, I really think we can steal from each other to keep a fast pace. I just sent him a pm detailing my thoughts on this, so Ill put it here for easy reference:

Sorry yet another PM. I did some testing on spies and you may or may not know all this stuff. It seems base cost to steal a tech is +50% of the tech cost, then apply the modifiers. So in our game, Feudalism is 1001 beakers to research. This means 1502 to steal w/o modifiers. We get modifiers for trade routes (-20%)(req. Sailing probably), the spy being stationary for 5 turns (-50%), distance away (probably +10% or less since we are so close), and finally if one person has more EPs than the other (+/-30%).

So by alternating who steals what, we can always get the discount for "more EPs than the other party". Thus Feudalism's 1502 cost becomes:
-20% trade routes: -300 (1202)
+10% distance: +120 (1322)
-50% stationary spy: -661 (661)
-33% more EPs: -220= 440 total cost.

I think it has to be calculated in that order and Im unsure if the new patch will change this. But it seems that if we alternate stealing when one of us has more EPs and gets discounts then we should be not that disadvantaged by not trading (if you discount all the hammers for the spies and junk).

My entire gameplan is based on attaining the super 12 strength UU of the Byzantines as early as possible while being able to produce them in great numbers. If Ynnek and I can successfully steal from each other, we should be able to get there fast. Nothing can really stand up to the Cataphracts, and the best pre-engineering counter, elephants, not only require HBR now but I have 3 sources of ivory close which I hope are the only ones around.

The Map

The map is very crowded. Ynek is to my south, and Whompus Tubbius is to my North. VRCWAgent is to my east, and Davo is west somewhere. Obviously Davo is a good target for early warring to be able to build the Heroic Epic. I have peace deals with the other 3. So Davo must fall at some point, but I also need to acquire horses. There are some to the far NE and another source right across the border in Whompland.

Whomp seems to be allied with Robi D, so I really dont want to war with them. It would be better to secure some uncontested and then go on the warpath.

My demographics are very good, #1 in GNP and manufacturing thanks to the good capital spot. Food is not overly abundant, but with all the production this is not too bad of a situation. I really suck if I cant parlay this start into owning my continent. Just need to keep the others at bay for a little while until Guilds and then it should be game on.

Well it looks like kill Davo and acquire horses can be accomplished with the same stone. Speaking of stone, the next settler will run up to acquire it. The Great Wall would be tremendous, as would the Pyramids. I am soliciting opinions on where and when to build these glorious items.

Davo has a total of 3 warriors and an archer. I feel pretty confident on being successful in attacking him at any time unless he manages to get metal. However that has to be balanced with infrastructure which will be key for fast Cataphract deployment. The plan now is to get the Great Wall, which is thousands of free beakers essentially with the settled spy specialist (ie, stealing techs that are off my research path).

The question is, where to settle him? I think the two choices are Whomp or Ynek; these two are the likeliest to survive since we all have allies. Charlemagne and Suryavarman seem to stand alone, and if they die then the settled spy advantage dies with them (I would assume). My first Gp will be a scientist for academy, and the spy will come second. I am currently directing all spy points away from Ynek so that he can steal things off me (Im giving him my first spy to steal writing hopefully, you can gift spies to non alphabet civs). I am unsure if I can direct WhompTubby's research, and I kind of want to attack them eventually.

4 cities should do it with such crowdedness unless I find another spot near. I need about five more workers too. Maybe I can build library-settler-Pyramids in the capital, and attempt to chop out the Wall in City 4 (which is bound to be food poor). Then with those in place war with Davo for horses (maybe I have xbows/maces then?); there are also horses in the northeast but they are pretty far.

New update:

Alpha is in. Only Whomp/Tubby and Ynek seem particularly advanced (ie, have writing).

Who the heck is Tailless Kangaru? Score leader yet lacks archery, bronze, AND animal husbandry? I was going to guilds but if it is going to be that easy why not attack him now?!?

Hmm had a long post that got lost. I will try to keep this more updated than the Klammi spoiler.

The Great Wall is Byzantine. I founded a city directly on the stone rather than the planned plains hill. This resulted in 1 less grass tile but there were barbs in the area, some additional forest chops, and I was a bit worried about Suryavarman's poking around. Now we just have to pop a spy out of there. I think popping the spy there first makes the most sense as I really will need cats (for Davo against hilltop archers), CoL, and Feudalism sooner rather than later. Running a spy specialist with a courthouse would be good but CoL is on Ynnek's tech path. I might have to dirty up the spy pool with a scientist and hope for the best. The capital is running a scientist while it builds the Pyramids; I will add a second when it completes as I'd rather not risk the wonder build.

Davo's city of Osaka has fallen easily. Its really nice commerce wise, with a gold, cow, and oasis that had the waters of life event (+1 gold).

GNP continues to trend upwards from 1360 BC to 1000 BC though someone is not far behind. Perhaps a financial civ on the other continent?

Suryavarman's capital and his crap jungle city are now Byzantine. Currency is due in 1 finally. The original plan to go to Guilds is really in the crapper now. Now with all these calendar resources better to get math and calendar to further consolidate the economy, which is break even at 60%. Currency should help that, but I really need to steal sailing from someone.

2 cities from Davo and 3-4 more in the east or NW will do for now on this high seas crowded ass map. That many will give me twice the production and twice the power when war is inevitably declared by Whomp/Robi. With current peace deals I should make it to Guilds even with extra city maintenance. Where to put the new cities though? Any lurker ideas?

Robi has taken Stonehenge from Germany and I think thats it for them. The Khmer have one more city (with marble!); it is defended by 3 warriors, one of which killed my scout there. I also lost a double woodsman axe vs. a warrior @ 88% odds which hurts. He was intended to be my woodsman 3 medic helper.

Also I need:

-a place to put the palace as the current location has poor food.
-cottages! I havent made a single one yet.
-Aesthetics-Lit for TGL and maybe Schwedagon Paya.
-After that on to Machinery/Guilds and then Liberalism. (Steal Civil Service).

Personally i never see a need for Schwedagon Paya, philo is generally a bulb away and by the time you get to the point of completing it you'll have 3 of the other religious civics anyways. To me=waste of hammers.

Tiwanku looks like a reasonable capital from what i can see of it.

You dont have a cottage so far? it might be better to run an SE till democracy and then switch en masse.

Only Whomp and Ynnek have cottages down and they are my allies. Whomp wants to invade Charlemagne (to my east) but he looks to be an irrigater as well.

The settler who would become Adrianople was going to found there at Tiwanaku but Ynnek asked for the site so I moved him up there. I guess Adrianople can grow fast and work a bunch of cottages so it might be a nice capital. Production is very good elsewhere so it shouldnt miss that and still has a couple of hills and stone to build Oxford.

I dont know about Paya. Its only 225 hammers w/ gold and it saves researching Theology/Philo. Philo needs to be researched anyhow but it can be after Edu and Oxford (if timed correctly). Its pretty low priority. Maybe Hanging Gardens would be good with 7 cities, and use the engineer from Constantinople on TGL. Dunno really.

Motoring along. Pyramids is in, bought some granaries, and now will switch to representation. Research is on construction to get a few cats out and take Davo out finally along with the last Tailless town. Aggressive settling by the others means I will need to build settlers sooner rather than later to grab 3-4 more spots.

An update

We are now at 275 BC. I am still at war with TK who is an AI now.

TK War

This went well until the last city. By losing my woodsman II axe at 89% odds, I only had 2 axes vs. an archer and 2 warriors at the last city. So no dice there, I felt it was too risky. BTS AI will counterattack wounded units and I thought I might lose them both. So the wait for cats begins, and now 15 turns later they are getting there. 1 is out, and another will be chopped. Robi is helping by starving the city, and Ynnek lent me a quechua he had in the area.

Research

Currently I am waiting for my spies to steal IW and Calendar from Whomp, should be 3-5 more turns there. Then on to HBR for elephants, maybe Lit for TGL, and MC->Machinery->Guilds. Music would be nice but Im already off the tech path to Superknights too much I think. After Drexel and Davo Im the only logical target for Whomp and Robi so I need to double their power. No one has HBR yet so elephants will help and are required for Knights. I had thought to steal HBR but it will take too much time. Stealing is only slightly more efficient for me until courthouses and jails and things. Lit will open up the military national wonder as well.

Demographics are good still, if I turn on research I am 130+. Dont know who is at 113 gnp though?

War

The capital will now start building units for the Drexel and Davo wars. It should do 2 turn axes and spears for now and the occasional cat. Davo's cities arent the greatest, and Im beginning to think to skip him since he has about 12 archers sitting there. I already have one taoist city, and the Drexel capital is very productive.

Scouting Reports

Robi D- destroyed Germany and obtained Stonehenge. Has quite some phalanxes and chariots about. Defintely a wildcard but we have peace until 500 AD.

Whomp- at war with Davo, and being stolen from by me. We have good relations, but I dont know how long those will last. We have an unspoken peace. Probably should lock him in until 500 AD as well and get Robi to extend to 1000 AD.

Ynnek- my partner. Been sending spies over to him but he has not had success in stealing alphabet/currency yet. In 13 turns my GSpy will be born to attain his Feudalism and things. I really would like to see him get more cities from Davo and Drexel as well so aim is in that direction as well.

Wonders

Probably try to get Hanging Gardens as the pop boost would be nice, and later TGL.

Some rather good news this turn, as Robi has researched Aesthetics. Since he has 2 marble, I think he will go for Lit next. So this will shorten my tech path, which is HBR in 2, Aesthetics 2 after, and then MC-> Guilds.

I can prechop forests, and when my spies steal Lit they can finish TGL.

I stole Calendar from Whomp, but my spy got caught, and then stealing IW was unsuccessful :(. Pretty bad luck. Calendar is already a big boon though with silk and dyes coming online.

TaillessKangaru has met his demise with no losses. Now Byzantine forces are turning south to eliminate Davo, who has been quite sneaky and forced me to whip a few times in Osaka. With cat support and elephants Davo should be ended soon. I have offered his size 8 capital to Ynnek and will assist him in getting it.

RE: Ynnek. He has not been successful in stealing from me twice which is bad luck. Also he has been hemmed in a bit from the subpar starting location and my grabbing cities so I have offered to gift units to go with his several units. I think he can take Davo's capital and most of Amarugia (VRCW) before Whomp gets there. I truly want him as a strong ally, and I certainly cant handle more cities. I also have a great spy which I have offered to him for 1500 gold. If he uses that on me we will have tech parity, and I can turn up research to 90-100%. I think this benefits us both a lot so I hope he is game.

Research is looking good. Col is in, and Lit is a one turn tech with overflow! Looks like Robi D already has lit, but with the prechopped forests maybe I can steal TGL from him. That should be an easy +12 science and CS should be at least +15 science. A merchant to bulb guilds should be up in 8 turns with luck (might be a scientist).

Some turn by turn increases in GNP:

Great Library is in. Robi still lacks math so he cant go for music. Davo is down to one city.

An interesting thing with the Barbarian horse archer event. They spawned on Davo in the NW, but have traveled through my lands and Davo's lands to attack Ynnek. Very strange and a pain in the ass for Ynnek Im sure. Im sending troops to him.

The capital will complete the hanging gardens and then Heroic Epic and build maces. Troops are urgently needed. There are not any threats really, but better to have them available.

I think with beating Robi to TGL, and his successive posts in two days coinciding with me switching to Bureau while the others lack alphabet and math mostly, and Whomp's comments ingame yesterday they have identified me as public enemy #1. Whomp hasnt replied to my offer of extending peace past 500 AD. So what I do depends on him really. Tech path is completely different should we go peaceful.

War Route

Straight to guilds. Build phracts. Kill everything. I played a test game on immortal always war with these beasts some time ago (world buildered em in), and they rarely lack good odds. Elephants and pikes have to highly promoted or on favorable terrain (pikes) just to get better than even odds. Also they last until Rifling, a darn long time. Whomp/Tubby (if no peace) and the other continent are the war choices.

The capital and one other city (the old TK capital with HE) can do 2 turn cataphracts. A couple others can do 4-5 turn phracts.

Peace Route

Probably concentrating on Astro is more important than usual. The other continent I am betting is retarded. They have been at war and there are some AIs there. Azza is the #1 score civ and he looks to be just around Robi in development. He is Pacal I believe. A thought is cheap resourceless spears might bog a war down there.

Anyways, peace route would be MCasting (2), Machinery (4), Compass (2), Optics (3-4), Paper (4), Education (bulbed), philo (3), Liberalism->Astro. Building Oxford and some wonders this way, with a detour to music sometime for the free golden age. This will open up intercontinental trade routes and some health trade that will be needed at that time (only +13 now with bananas left to connect and no other resources available on the continent).

BCLG100
09-01-2008, 16:04
You may as well take whomp/tubby out.

if the other continent is retarded and you think you can take them then you may as well. you seem to have quite a tech advantage as it is.

killercane
09-01-2008, 20:38
Problem with a war like that though is they have about 7-8 cities. Even in a best case scenario, I have to raze or keep. With razing, Robi will just move in, and with keeping my research will be crap for a long time. I think its manageable if I continue to get gpt from Ynnek, and I just remembered I can probably gift him cities.

I am still a bit concerned that a war with WhompTubby will be a bit drawn out with only 2 main production centers. I dont think I can get to guilds by 500 AD so the start would be maces/cats/elephants vs. their best unit, elephants.

I think you are right though. If I can beat Whomp, I can concentrate on the other continent for domination.

killercane
09-02-2008, 21:45
The war with Whomp goes pretty well, though I lost 4 cats this turn. He is about to lose his capital and another city.

About 21 turns until Astronomy @ 50% and the other continent gets a whuppin. It seems Stapel, Azza, and ID are allied over there but reports on their tech progress is they are behind pretty far.

Tarsaran and Constantinople produce 2 cats every 3 turns so that should put me at around 35-40 cats for an invasion (17 now). Once Whomp's cities come out of revolt they should be really pouring in. Im building galleys to upgrade to galleons but only have one pretty terrible coastal city.

I might try to GS highlight astro and use Liberalism for Nationalism to start another golden age. Taj +free econ merchant and another GP= 24 more golden age turns to rush cats on the other continent.

Robi and I have endgame peace. I wouldnt think Ynnek would do so, but who knows.

Azzaman showed up this turn with a caravel. He lacks Philosophy, Paper, Education, Banking. I should see his research next turn as I jacked up espionage.

My GNP sucks now as I have no one to trade with; so finishing banking is a big priority. I'll try to push my luck and take Rifling from Liberalism (Engineer-Rep Parts, due in 8 turns, scientist due in Taillengrad, due in 12ish turns, for Printing Press).

Maybe I can steal Philosophy from Ynnek if he would use the rest of his spy points. I still dont know why he has not been very successful at stealing (though he is #3 most advanced civ to my knowledge (Azza has 400 GNP being financial with multiple trade partners).

By the way, there is a pitboss at CFC that needs two players to start if you are interested, Masters of Arboria. Might be interesting.

Hmm I dunno. I always send a stack of 5-6, and hope to get at least 3 techs. Move em all in at the same time, and maybe 1 will get caught there. Chance of getting caught is like 5% per turn.

Might as well update this.

I took Physics with Liberalism for the free scientist, and have one other scientist for Chemistry and Biology to get Smoky Mountain online with a bazillion specialists via National Park.

Robi D just built the Apostolic Palace. If he starts trying to spam missionaries I will make privateers and sink all his ships.

Azzaman has the next best gnp, and is not very far behind. He is up engineering and gunpowder but down liberalism, physics, and something else I forget.

Tech choice is the problem right now. I need Biology, econ free merchant, and nationalism for Taj Mahal but I dont know what tech path azzaman is on so will probably just watch him and snag Taj when he starts researching it.

Well here is an update on all things Byzantine.

When we last left off I was wondering on tech path. I took Econ and the free merchant, and began on Nationalism for golden age but Ynnek snagged Taj. He must have chopped forests because i cant see how else he got it before Constantinople building it in 6 turns. Chemistry and Biology are in, as is rifling and I am two turns from Mil tradition. I have 2 scientists being born in the next 5 turns and an engineer shortly after. The scientists will help research Fission and Electricity while I go towards Rocketry for some nukes.

Here are some shots of the world:

You can see the National Park there which Ive been waiting forever to build. It was cash rushed during a 5 turn spending spree via us. It only makes 150 beakers, but the scientist every 10 turns or so is worth 2k, so really it is a 350 bpt city for free.

Dandridge took advantage of a bug that gave me a Boudica city to land and sneak attack my forces there, but I reinforced and drove him back to his own lands. I am now pummeling him with airships and keeping his ships off my shores while ramping up his war weariness. I am pretty immune to WW with hippodromes (awesome UB), a ton of resources, pretty much full infrastructure, and even a +1 for making Boudica a vassal. Boudica's lands are pretty key as I can bomb anyone from there.

Stapelm, Dandridge, and Azzaman are building to try to attack but I dont see how they can succeed. I have Mil Tradition in 2 turns and can run at 0 research to upgrade all units to rifles and cavalry and still outresearch them based on specialists. I am even upgrading Robi's units for free and giving him galleons since Dandridge attacked him too (his units were teleported to Dandridge's lands when Dan did a city gifting trick).

The only thing I lack is ships really, but I am upgrading caravels to frigates and can have destroyers in the near future. Dandridge wants to call the game but it is up to the others. I think Ynnek is trying a cultural victory, but he is pretty far off. Robi could win with the Apostolic Palace but that is unlikely, and UN is also unlikely. I will probably build it and have no elections for secretary.

Next turn I get a scientist for Electricity, and then another from the Oxford city for Fission. So I can start manhatten within 5 turns, and it will take about 8 or 10 to build it. Should coincide with Rocketry pretty well and I will nuke everyone until we call the game. Another option is burning 2 of Azzaman's biggest cities that are coastal and only defended by 2 units each. Just have to sneak down there and do them up right.

I assume you'll have already built it but anychance you can build the national epic in your park city?

otherwise v. impressive.

Its already built in Adrianople the Oxford city which has a ton of excess food and also makes 100 gpp+ per turn. The plan is to build Wall Street there in Smoky Mountain and run merchants to make some money for raising the science a bit or upgrading.
