The last few days we've been flooded with spambots. Some of these post multiple threads as well. As a very drastic measure I've disabled member registration.

The other options this forum software offers (captions etcetera) don't seem to work. I hope we can find a way to fix the mailserver. That will allow some more options.

For now, if you know anyone who wants to become a member, let me know and I'll re-enable registration.

Sorry for the inconvenience (although chances are that if you're reading this, you're already registered).

You might want to add this info to the main page as well, Shabba

I understand your decision, shabba.

But that also means IMO that now we should act and not just talk concerning a new forum software/upgrade.

Yesterday I reenabled the registration. So far only 1 spambot registered, and failed to spam.

Ack! Bot-spam incoming.

So unrefined. So unsophisticated.

Someone should use their ironfist on some bots

Today the site has been flooded with spambot applications. I've disabled the registration again, for now.

shabba, dunno what your ASP skills are like but adding a 'stupid' question to the form like 'Are you human' yes/no usually fixes this as bots are programmed for the standard form .

Unfortunately my ASP skills are nonexistent.

After two weeks of open registration and two pages full of spambots I closed registration again. It's getting pretty annoying by now.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the .asp files, otherwise I could've added a checkbox "Check this if you're not a bot."

Can't you upgrade to, say, vBulletin? [tongue]

Oh, sure... I refer to this thread (http://www.civ3duelzone.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4743).

I've got someone that wants to sign up on the forum, but can't find the signup form. Is this still locked?

I imagine so, we don't want more of your type hanging around ;)

Yes, AFAIK. It's probably best to PM shabba, since he's the one that locked it, IIRC.

No, it's not locked. I can even see the "register" link in the top right menu while logged in...

mauer

It was locked though. I PMed Shabba and he unlocked it.

It was indeed locked.

On the main page it says that registration was enabled because CDZ is celebrating its' 5th birthday... :)

Or because mauer PM'ed Shabba...

And I already saw two spambots this morning...

OK Shabba, he's registered and the birthday is over if you want to stop the tsunami of spambots :)

What, you don't like the spambots?

Maybe it's some kind of Texas-specific thing to not like spambots?

;)

Anyway, I disabled the spambotmagnet again. If anyone wants to sign up, find a way to spam me.

[bump]

See above.

It seems that the spambotmagnet has an incremental effect over time: if you keep it active, it will attract more and more bots every day. The amount of spam on the site seems to be fairly constant over time though, but the spambots' spam has a detrimental effect on the indiginous spam. In other words: spambots killed our spam. Ohnoes!

Well time to start correcting that shortfall ;)

I believe oyzar is the one we were waiting on to register. He has now, so you could take it back down if you want. Doesn't bother me either way, cept the spam.

On the bright side, the spambots make it seem as if there's some regular activity on this forum. Anyway, I'll use my magic powers to disable registration again. Still a pity that the spambot controls don't work. We could need some members of the non-spambot kind.
